Will a true analyst please stand up?

This is exactly why there's no good answer to the question - it's impossible for people who are biased in the first place (and we're all biased toward UK) to have an unbiased opinion on this subject.

I like DeCourcy a lot. But he's a HUGE homer for Coach Cal. So UK fans see him as "neutral," but if you were to ask others around the country, they would say DeCourcy favors Cal. It's the same reason UK fans hate Dakich. He's actually very good when it comes to everything not involving UK. But he has seen how easy it is to rile up UK fans, and it's almost a sport for him now.

DeCourcy has been around for a lot longer than since Coach Cal has been here, so no.

I used to like Clark Kelogg alot but after we ousted OSU from the dance when they were the fav he hasn't been the same. Truth is what most of us don't realize is that it is a job and if u have ever worked for somebody then u know that your opinion in public should follow the company line. It's sad but this is not the same world it even was 10 years ago and it's not ok to bash officials anymore shame to because in the 80s and 90s if a ref really flubbed a call then the analyst was pretty relentless on them it helped because the refs didn't want to be called out on national TV. Now I get sick about it. A few still will point out bad calls bilas does some but more often or not most will try to justify the call. If u don't think that most of those guys are just doing what they are told then ur wrong. Even Dickie V would go on and on about bad calls back in the day but we are in a different world now.

Unbiased and fair opinion, me, basketball knowledge...not so much.

They all have an agenda. They all played in an area of the country, have their favorites, and have their bias. It's foolish to think other wise. Of the two that try to tow a line Bilas and Rafferty both come to mind of the big boys.
I agree kats23. They all have an agenda. It seems the days of unbiased reporting, either of sports or politics or anything else for that matter, are gone. And if you're a fan of UK and Calipari, everyone has an opinion that colors their analysis, and few even try to hide it.

But I agree that Jay Bilas and Bill Raftery are about the best out there who at least make an attempt to be unbiased.

Jay Bilas is still the best.

He knows the game as well as anybody, and he strives to be objective on nearly every topic.. the only exception is that he hates the NCAA like a fat kid hates celery, which doesn't impact his evaluation of basketball itself.

Some of you guys are giving up on him because he's mum on UNC, but what is he supposed to do? Get fired over it? It's the biggest scandal in CBB history and nobody on the #1 sports outlet discusses it. It's obvious that the orders come from on high (John Skipper, UNC alum and president of ESPN).

In fact, people should be incredibly worked up about the fact that the station is ignoring the scandal altogether. That itself is a scandal, and I'm not a conspiracy theory guy whatsoever, but it's painfully obvious that people are muzzled up there.

So again, is Bilas supposed to risk his job when it's clear that the order is out to keep it down? He's taken a lot of controversial stances, made a lot of noise on broover legitimate problems and that is only part of the problem. A lot of the very people who take deserved criticismlats that I'm sure the business suits don't like, but I think this one topic is completely off the table for them.

I don't really have any problem with Bilas and in some respects he is very good. Clearly a smart guy.

However he is also infinitely better at identifying problems than proposing solutions. I could say the same for myself and probably everyone but Bilas
in particular feasts on righteous indignation over real problems without offering anything (often) as an alternative, certainly not with the same adamance as the criticism.

Even a lot of NCAA people probably could privately acknowledge the same institutional problems in its organization, but because they are actually in that position realize that solutions are much more difficult than criticism.

It isn't surprising to me that many love Bilas in the crusader role, because it is pretty easy to play to people's anger when the anger is deep and widely shared. Now, I am glad he is a critical voice because if he was not then there would be a void. I just wish there was more of a recognition of the complexities involved and the fact that if you just replaced the NCAA with its loudest critics then the problems might be just as bad if not worse

I like Barkley too. Gives his honest opinion, like it or not.

Also like Bilas. That's about it. Jay Williams isn't as bad as people make him out to be, despite being a Dukie. I've heard him be quite complimentary to UK. It's hard to find any analysts without bias.

I actually don't listen to them that much any more. About 99% of them get on my nerves. I either listen to the UK broadcast or mute it.

I like Bilas and Decourcy best. All of them - all of them - have relationships with coaches, and so they have natural (because they're talking about a friend) and professional (because they don't want to be shut out) reasons for protecting coaches and schools. That comes up from time to time and is largely avoidable.

A plus is that both of them give Cal a fair shake.
