Why the F*** was Ole Miss given the ball

They called the goaltend and so Ole Miss got the ball. They didn’t take the goaltend away until the next dead ball. Too late to give us the ball then.

Which is why the rule is so obnoxiously bad. You HAVE to immediately review it and treat it like the fumble rule where if there is a clear recovery it goes to that team and id not use the possession arrow. The way it is it simply punishes a team for the refs incompetence.

Yeah idk why that was any different than the first shot clock violation they got wrong but gave ole miss the ball back

Can you name a team that has been penalized more by goaltends than us?
No, and I've watched a game where a similar play happened and they reviewed it immediately, waived off the goal tend and then gave it back to the offense because they clearly recovered it. Which just makes the whole scenario even more maddening since we've been shafted twice now.

Espn didn't find it prudent to explain it.
It blows my mind how announcers today RARELY tell what is going on in the game!!! They will barely tell WHO received the foul and how many that player has!!

They would rather talk about the Soft Serve ice cream at Rupp that ANYBODY could get at their local Dairy Queen.

ESPN SUCKS!!!

I get the sentiment but the ice cream thing is just a meme Jay plays up to get some free soft serve.

Whoever put that rule is in incompetent and stupid

I think it was alternate possession.

Ole Miss got the opening tip.
UK got a held ball at 12:05.
Then the Reed play/goaltend gave it back to Ole Miss.

But if you look at the live stats on UK's site, it doesn't show the possession changed (it just says missed layup).

Ole Miss got the ball and kept the possession arrow, according to what I was seeing on the screen. I suppose it's possible that the arrow got reversed after a few minutes and I didn't notice, I doubt it though. That whole scenario is just deflating when it happens.

I thought all this happened immediately after the play (dead ball on the goaltending call).

But what if the team getting the ball already has the possession arrow in its favor. Do they get it twice before changing it?

If its a clear recovery, they don't lose possession arrow. If it isn't then they do lose it. At least that is how it should work. They don't do anything consistently as it stands.

…after they changed goaltend to block, when UKy was going to ask the same thing. Did we at least get the possession arrow off that b? Yes?

…after they changed goaltend to block, when UK got the rebound?
Yeah, I was going to ask the same thing. Did we at least get the possession arrow? I mean, they call goaltending. Our guy has an easy rebound and put back. Forget about the put back. We definitely would have had the ball and then all the sudden they reversed and they get the ball. That is some bullshit. I think the second time this year it has happened to us. Horrible rule either way.

Possession arrow didn’t change

We got the ball to start the second half. They did change the possession arrow.

It did. The goaltending was called and at that dead ball it was the tv timeout. They had changed the score to 20-21 as they were going to commercial.

Then we got back from commercial, it was 18-21 again and Ole Miss had the ball, I had no idea wtf was going on

Maybe we could exploit this to our advantage in the future. Nah, refs would still screw us.

They may not have changed it right away on TV (they were probably confused too), but TV isn't official of course. What I put above are the jump balls for the game is accurate.

But we can all agree the rule is stupid and should be changed. They should only review it at the END OF THE GAME (like when we got screwed vs. LSU).

Exactly. We had the rebound and a putback. If they hadn't made a bad call, we still would have had those 2 points. As it ended up, we lost the 2 and possession of ball. It is exactly as you say, punishing our team for the referees' incompetence.

And not a peep out of ESPN on return to play?? That was irritating also.

So does anybody actually know what the rule actually is supposed to be for this? Last night they clearly just went to the possession arrow, which screwed us out of an easy putback, but would at least be understandable if the rule is clearly written that way. The confusing thing though is that I swear I’ve seen it in an Alabama game this year where the offense was awarded possession because they were determined to have clearly controlled the ball after the reversed goaltend. Did one of the officiating crews misapply the rule, or is it one of those dreaded things where it’s left to their discretion and they just screwed us?

Thanks for clarifying. I was at the game and they never said anything over the PA. We had 20 points and then we had 18.

Quite a BS call since Edwards cleaned up the miss and put it back in if that were a play on as the refs later determined.

I said it last night, why do we always get the worst of every review. Any opposing coach can disagree with a call against us and it's reviewed, and most of the time it's changed in their favor even if it's wrong. These things have been happening for a long time.

Just rewatched it, they did NOT change the possession arrow. They simply gave the ball to Ole Miss. What a joke!
