Why does Roy Williams hate timeouts?

Even their fans hate that about him. I guess he doesn't have anything to tell them anyway. Can a coach with 2 titles be overrated?

I'm not always in favor of the well you have to call a timeout...it also gives the defense a chance to reorganize. But maybe here because the offense didn't look like they knew what to do.

In that spot, with the more talented, veteran team, on your home court, with a superior coach on the other sideline, I like the original idea not to call timeout.

Once things stalled at the top of the key with about 10 seconds, he should have called it.

But overall, I'm team no timeout. Let your guys play.

Knight was under control and did not rush. Unc looked like a chicken with its head cut off. Apples and oranges.

But it's not apples and oranges. Our guy just executed better. Cal trusts his guys to make plays and not let the defense organize. Roy tries to do the same thing, his guys just failed. I guess you could make the argument that once it became clear his guys were clueless and disorganized he should've called a TO. But I wouldn't call it apples and oranges just because our guy executed it.

Those two situations are complete opposites of each other. But the bigger point I agree with is.. Cal does not call timeouts at the end of the games like Roy. I would personally prefer if he did a little more.

Cal plays it the same way. Don't believe me? Go back and watch the last 15 seconds of our upset win over OSU in the 2011 tournament.

It's the coaches job to know when to do that and when not to. Their PG was looking at him expecting the timeout and Williams waved him on, then admitted he should have called the timeout. Their fans have been complaining about that forever.

Just as our fans would've complained about it if Knight turned it over there and we lost the game. The coach always looks smarter when players make plays.

Comes with the territory. That's why they get paid so well. My check as a fan must still be in the mail.

I think it should depend on the situation. UNC*** was struggling badly on offense and so a timeout would've probably (maybe) helped. If they had momentum and were executing well, let em play, especially with a pretty good, senior pg.

But Roy has a long and sordid history of refusing to call timeouts. And that drives UNC*** fans nuts. And anything that drives UNC*** fans nuts makes me happy.

i have a theory......i think roy is not a good in-game coach, and can't really draw up a "slam dunk" play with high percentage........i think he the pressure of his instructions to his players will reflect even more his poor x's and o's....

The only places Roy has ever coached is Kansas and UNC, the second and third winningest programs in college basketball. He's had better talent in at least 90% of the games he's coached. When he plays a team with comparable talent he will lose the majority of the time.

Go watch Memphis Kansas national championship. Up 9 with 2 minutes left. They were falling apart

I'm the biggest sunshine Cal pumper on here but he has a tendency not to use timeouts until recently

Can a coach with 2 titles be over rated? Hell yes! First of all he won his first title with Matt Dohertys recruits, and the second one by way of faulty academic scams and fake degrees... Probably the first one too... I will never have one ounce of respect for that man or that program

couldn't win at kanas - went to unc where none of the players were ineligible .......won 2 with cheaters.......bill self wins at kansas......K owns roy.......

And not just there but many other times and in times when it hasn't worked out. There's been at least one time I remember Cal not using a timeout and fans went bonkers when he left it in his pocket. I'm of the opinion, you call the timeout to make sure you're all on the same play but it's one of those things that if it works you're a genius and if it doesn't you're a fool.

I'm sorry, love cal, but his use of timeouts have cost him in MAJOR ways. I won't list all the examples.

If you fail to let that be a reality to you, I'm not sure what more you would need.

I will say, the last few games, it appears he's starting to call them more like he should have to begin with. Letting players play is fine. Allowing them too much rope resulting in them hanging themselves is another IMO.

That makes more sense in an under 8 situation. IF the offense knows what to run ( or you have Murray or Ulis).

That was a cluster last night.
