Why cant Stoops Recruit an SEC calibre QB.

Our coach has been here a decade and hasn't recruited a serviceable SEC calibre QB out of high school since he has been here. Why has no one ever called him on that, if the starter goes down we are just screwed. What is the problem!
We may never have another blue chipper straight out of high school. We will get our qbs from the portal and that’s not the worst thing. Btw most everyone’s backup qb will be of lower quality from here on. None of these kids will want to hold a clipboard when they can go free and clear to another P5 school and be the man

A other one, we have to get the first one before we can use that word.

Nobody decent is holding a clipboard at Kentucky why do that when you can transfer to another school offering you a starting job

In fairness I've followed UK football for 30 years and we've recruited 3 HS QB's that were good, Couch, Jared and Woodson....it isn't just a Stoops problem, it is a UK problem.

That said it really doesn't matter all that much anymore with the portal availability. Not to mention kid wasn't that bad last night for a first start. We didn't lose because of him.

I do not know if it means or suggests anything, but it is interesting to note Sheron completed 15 passes, with 11 of them to different receivers. On the bright side, I thought Magwood looked good.

It's partly the style of play. Stoops likes to play slow and grind out games. We have one of the top 3 QBs in next year's NFL draft and he was out of the Heisman talk after two weeks. You just wont get the stats here to make the headlines. Levis is just so talented that you can't hide him. Coen let him play football while the new guy is trying to make an NFL tryout for him..

Stoops needs to quit bringing in nfl coaches and stick with successful college coaches to fill out the staff. I am not a Stoops fan and probably never will be. He is just too stubborn to be more successful than he has been this far. He has reached his ceiling as Gromcat said.

You didn’t like coen last year ?

Sheron is not a SEC caliber QB. Other teams lose there starting QB and they still can run good offense. We looked horrible against one of the worst Defenses in the conference
He could have done more than he was allowed to do imo. I believe the coaches thought our defense would shut down a very poor USC offense and we could win with running the ball and an occasional short pass . It was still that kind of game at halftime but the defense decided it would shit the bed during the second half. When the game didn’t go as planned,we didn’t have a game plan in place to win . IMO the coaches got caught with their pants down and the defense needs to look in the mirror.

I'm originally from Northern Kentucky and watched all the good players in pee wee football since my sons played with/against many of them. Jared Lorenzen, Shaun Alexander, Mark Pike, Miles Simpson etc. And when I heard Drew Barker was a " 4 star recruit " and committed to Kentucky, I laughed my ass off. I watched him play all his life and he wasn't good enough to start for Centre or Georgetown. So I don't know what Stoops and company look for

Most SEC schools — most schools in the whole country — struggle to recruit top caliber quarterbacks, because there just aren’t a lot of them to recruit. Alabama went decades without an NFL caliber QB. If you expect Stoops to change a decades-long national trend, you’re probably going to be disappointed.

Stoops was planning on a 16 to 13 type win. Didn't happen for reasons you listed.

I know a coach from Northern Kentucky who pretty much said the exact same thing, although I believe Barker was better than Centre or Georgetown level of competition. He said everyone in the area knew there was absolutely no comparison between Towles and Barker, yet a huge part of the fanbase bought into the notion that Barker should've been playing over Towles. That's all in the past, of course, but what I heard confirms your sentiment.

FWIW ... it was amazing to see how many teams, including both UK and Louisville, overlooked the Ridder kid from Lou St X. that played so well at Cincinnati. I really thought he was a great college quarterback.

Regarding the QB position at UK I think it is MAINLY to support the above style of play. And for a Mark Stoops team that offensive style is "play good defense and RUN THE BALL".

Over the past 5 1/2 years, UK has averaged only 24 passes/game (PPG) with a "high" last year of 27.6 PPG. In terms of national rankings that average was #114. Not as bad as a few remaining "wish boners" but still pretty far down the passes attempted stat.

This year (and the past 2 full years) that "60/40" offensive run/pass ratio (plus some damn good Defense) has proven to be very successful for UK. For all you youngsters out there that is the way the game was played back in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Generally speaking, today's game is much more "offensively aggressive" but I think the Coach and most the fans are happy with what they have developed.

All JMO.

Peace

and Gino Guidugli was better than both of them and somehow ended up at Cincinnati too, but that was before Stoops

I remember when “fans” were dragging Woodson through the mud before his breakout season. I swear, UK fans sometimes can just be the worst.

Lucky he transferred to us. He could have stayed and worked for the job.
But he didn’t did he? He came here and played 2 years. Stoops and his staff went out and recruited him and he came here because of it. He’s 14-4 here as a starter.

why does it pain you to give stoops and his staff credit? It wasn’t luck. By the way, having Levis here is HUGE for UK’s future at that position. We need him to be drafted top 5. The better he does the better UK looks to other qb’s.

QB can be a tricky position. Beau Allen was the #6 QB in his class. He transferred out and didn’t transfer to a power 5, ended up at a low level program. I can only imagine the fan base backlash if UK didn’t recruit the #6 QB who was in the state of KY.

Have you been a fan of any UK football coach in your life time?

We just started running an offense last year that requires a legit pro style qb. Let’s see what stoops does going forward now that he’s committed to throwing the ball. Part of the problem has been the style. Things have changed. If anything is the problem it’s that sheron did get any meaningful minutes against garbage teams we front loaded the schedule with. I don’t think he’s bad but he played in 2A and going from that to the SEC well it doesn’t matter the 2A program it’s night and day

Sheron showed signs of being able to play some ball. Anyone who doesn't recognize what a fiasco any RS-FR with 2 snaps of prior participation is behind that line from the drop needs to move along.

He did not lead us to victory. He still showed me something. I think under better circumstances he could have shown more.

OL. OL. OL.

The cupcakes are gone. You can track wins and losses by the line regardless of who your QB is.

He was average. Retired after college because he wasn’t very good.
How many QB's have we had under Stoops who did not retire after their collegiate experience expired ??
By historical standards over the past 20 years, not including Levis, Johnson stacks up pretty well.
We were lucky he came our way out of JUCO, imho. He was a leader with a huge valentine ...

We will lose Magwood to the Portal if Scang doesn't figure out a way to use him more in the offense.

A huge waste of talent in WR room right now.

Our offense is the reason we can't recruit a legitimate QB and why talented WR go to places like Tennessee.

Sheron wasn't the problem
Oh the heck he wasn't. Try lining up in shotgun and having your QB continue to back pedal (when there was a pocket to just step up into) and tell me how easy it is to keep SEC DL from sacking the QB.

Sheron was brutal. He was 15-27 for 178 yard 2 TD and 1 Int. But 84 yards was on the last possession when USC was in prevent. So Sheron threw for less than 100 yards thru 3 1/2 quarters. Took all kinds of sacks, never threw the ball way. Has a noodle arm similar to Beau Allen.

We have to get a QB in portal as Sheron/Hogan as QB1 next year would be like return of Max Smith/Jaylen Whitlow era.
