Who was the best point guard to play at UK?

John Wall and it's not that close if we're talking individual basketball skill and athleticism.

I'm putting whoever mentions some short pasty white guy from a 1950s team on ignore.
Ralph Beard. Best credentials of almost any UK player, ever.

:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

The real answer is John Wall. Rare is the elite athlete who makes other elite athletes look ordinary, but that was Wall.

Best pure talent: John Wall
Player who did more for UK championship-wise: Wayne Turner

In my time watching

Best: Wayne Turner, perfect leader and head of the team on both ends.
Most talented at UK: John Wall
Best ever including the NBA: Rajon Rondo, champion, winner, and one of the highest hoops iqs in the last 20 yrs.

Tony Delk all day, played on the best UK team ever, champion, top 5 scorer, best defending guard at UK, winner all around.

Don't think that Beard is some slow pasty white guy from the 50s, he was known for being extremly quick, esp " for a white guy "! Anyone downplaying him is showing thierignorance. I'll admit he's way before my time but a 3 time AA, who's still considered one of the best PGs ever is no slouch, LOL!

That being said, in my admitingly bias opinion I'd still go with Wall, but Bead I would imagine would be right behind him.

The best "point guard" by definition in my lifetime is Kyle Macy IMO.

Wall is probably second and then I'd have to say Ulis.

Epps did what that team needed him to do but he would have just been mediocre on any other team.

We're Kentucky, obviously we've had a bunch of great point guards.

The "best ever" debates are always interesting. 60 years from now, while some kids are debating this, one will say, "And don't tell me John Wall, he played in a different era when the game wasn't close to what it is now". I always look at these as the best/most accomplished in his era because it's impossible to compare eras. I will say this...what Ralph Beard led his team to in a 12 month period is amazing. He leads his team to a National Championship, goes to London and leads his team to an Olympic Gold Medal and comes back and leads his team to another National Championship, all while going 74-4 and being 1st Team All American both years. Alumni Gym would be proud of me!

I never saw Beard play, unfortunately, but his accomplishments really are amazing. I think a lot of these threads go back to the player that one actually saw play.

Going with an outside pick here: Brandon Knight

Not as electrifying as Wall but I love PG's who can shoot...puts more pressure on the defense...Not to mention he took us to a FF with less talent than Wall had

Missed the pt guard part of the question. Thats a tough one for me then, overall guard Delk, Pt guard....not sure.

Probably Ralph Beard, but the ones I watched it would be Kyle Macy. A coach on the floor, always under control, one of the best free throw shooters ever, and could hit from outside. If we had a point guard as good as Macy I believe we would have had 2 more championships in the last seven years! In my opinion.

With less than five seconds on the clock? Patrick Sparks.

wow...you must be from Muhlenberg County. Patrick Sparks shouldn't be anywhere in the vicinity of this list, no matter what conditions you come up with just to get his name on it.

For me its Macy.

You play in the era you play. And you should be judged based on that. If Beard had grown up in the 21st century he would've been a different player as well. All that is conjecture though.
He was GREAT PG, in his era. Wall was a great athlete playing PG, and a really good one, in his.

My favorite Cat of all time....Kyle "String Music" Macy
I agree with all the ones I have watched, cannot comment on those I did not see play, Macy is the best pure point guard to play at UK, there have been a ton of really good guards at UK so the options are unlimited.

Beard was before my time, and I barely remember Macy (not enough to compare a player to him). So since Macy, I would go with Knight. I think many base the Wall argument on what he has & will do in the NBA, and/or his potential while at UK. But just pure skills I think it was Knight. And I think Ulis will challenge that! Wall couldn't shoot.

John Wall. It's not a debate, yet you have some on here saying Ulis is better of late. I do not see any in this thread though so kudos.

Actually it is a debate...and it's being debated in this thread. Try & pay attention.

Wall was really good. He also had almost as many turnovers in his 1 season as Macy had in 3.

put any All-American from the 50s in today's game and they don't stand out. Players are simply better today. John Wall would wipe his ass with Ralph Beard in his prime. John Wall playing in the 50s (hypothetically) would have monuments built for him as most would proclaim him a god sent down by the aliens.
I disagree, you can't compare apples to oranges to start with, but the physicality in those days and while Wall is a great athlete, his outside shooting wasn't that great until he went pro,he wouldn't have drove to the basket with the hammering people got in those days as easily

Wall. I know he couldn't shoot, but the rest of his game was just to preposterously good for me to put anyone else ahead of him.

How many Final Fours did Wayne "Turnerment play in?
Same amount as Allen Edwards. Was he the best shooting guard to ever play at Kentucky?

Don't get me wrong. I loved Wayne Turner as much as the next guy. He was a great point guard, made good decisions, good passer, had an awesome 12 foot floater in the lane, and was a tenacious defender. But by itself, number of final fours he played in is a silly criteria to use for the best point guard.

Wall has become a better PG than Macy. During their respective times at UK, Wall was a better high risk, stupefying, is-that-hoops-or-ballet action figure than any other college player ever, but Macy was a better PG. Rajon Rondo has become the best UK PG ever. Ulis may be better than Macy.
