Who gets the Texas job?

I posted last week that the rumor in Nashville was that they were firing Perry and intended to go after Cal.

But there were actually 3 names. Cal, Quinn Snyder and I don’t remember the other.

It ended up making the Austin paper.

You might look that up and see who the 3rd guy is.
Terry, not Perry

Chicken man gonna get you 20 wins and 20 kilos per season!!!

Seriously? I think they’d be nuts if they did.
I don’t think going to final fours and national titles are an expectation for Texas. Going to some sweet 16s, putting a bunch of players in the NBA and getting big brand coverage might be a big deal for them.

Texas and Kentucky are very different jobs

I would not be happy with a Sean Miller hire if I were a Texas fan. You get Will Wade to change his mind at NCST. Billy Donovan, Chris Beard and Dana Altman all took jobs and then left after a few days.

I'll happily take the job. I never played basketball, but I have a winning disposition and a desire to get paid a few million dollars over the span of three years.
I would like to apply for a position on your staff.

Credentials:
  • Played middle school basketball, scoring a career high 8 points in only 4 minutes of action
  • 35+ years of experience coaching college basketball from my couch. I have never lost a game or made a bad decision. I make all my decisions after the game.
  • Damn near undefeated in NBA 2K video games while running an uptempo offense
  • Attended the 1996 and 1998 Final Fours, so I have Final Four experience.

Base pay: $200K per year for three years.

Pitino ain’t leaving St. John’s. Perfect setup for him
Yes, if there’s one thing we know about Pitino, it’s that he’d never leave a perfect setup.

I have no idea whether Texas would actually look at Pitino, but I could make the case that they’d be a great match. And I’d wager that if Pitino ever sees a path to greater glory, he will leave St. John’s in a New York minute.

Unless what I heard is wrong, Oats was never offered the job here. The only three inquired were Hurley, Drew, and Pope.

But I agree, he won’t do that. It would be a lateral move.
Same (and I got that from Trilly Donovan’s site, which is “supposedly” reliable). I think the Oats story is Mitch called the Bama AD to say “any chance you guys would lower that $17 million buyout?” Answer was “nope”, and that was that.

Maybe they surprise me and make some kind of absurd offer that someone can’t refuse, but I don’t expect that it will be someone who’s already established another power conference program at a higher level than what Texas currently has. The Sean Miller rumors make a lot of sense in that regard. He was forced out at Arizona more because of a pay for play scandal that no longer seems like major baggage in the NIL era than for poor results on the court, so he already has some high level experience. While the new Big East is still a decent basketball conference, Xavier can’t compete with the SEC for resources either. Seems like it would be mutually beneficial on paper.
