While other teams load up with transfers and key returning players…

I do a lot of stock trading and my BIGGEST mistakes were jumping in to trades because I didn't want to miss out. I see the portal the same way. I have zero problem with the staff waiting patiently for the right player. There is a ton going on behind the scenes that we can't see. Besides, how many threads have we had recently that named a player in the portal and begged Cal to go get him? Seriously, how many of those "go get em" players would work out??

Patience can be and often is rewarded. Now, if we get to the Summer and we have an empty roster, yeah, I will be upset but it is too early to panic.

Well said…..there are PLENTY of conversations going on, and it’s a miracle all of us crazy UK fans aren’t in the know…..cmon man this is a business

We have a team we will go 7-8 deep. We are set if Oscar returns.

That's what people said last season and nothing happened and we ended up shorthanded.
Cal is never going to use all of our schollys (this isn’t going to change so get over it), and why would a “solid” transfer want to come to UK and maybe get 10-15 mins a game? When we land the right portal guy (s) it’s because he will be a solid plug and play for the finalized lineup, which is far from confirmed. The players and their “handlers/business team” know if they are a good fit at UK if certain pieces fall, and they are willing to wait because we have close to the best NIL money out there.

We wait on Chris Livingston who needs a miracle to get drafted in the second round. Some schools already have a team for next year, Time to wake up Cal!
So true! There were 949 players in the college basketball transfer portal as of this morning. The way things are going Calipari is going to miss out on at least 900 of them! Wake up Cal!

So wait around to see what our guys do and be caught short again? You must be a Cal fan.

Well stated. This happens every April now where people are in crisis mode and they don't learn. Every year you read the same stuff that the staff is just sitting on their hands, etc.

A lot of what the staff is doing isn't being made public. I would like to see them fill out the roster more for insurance purposes.

WE don't learn? How many did we add last season?Yes ONE and we had zero bench.

Okay, serious question: As I counted the roster, we had 11 players who were capable of playing significant minutes. (Collins, Fredrick, LIvingston, Reeves, Theiro, Toppin, Oscar, Wallace, Ware, Wheeler and Ugonna)

We can argue personnel all day long but in keeping on topic, it seems to me that should be enough players to field a highly competitive team in most years. To say that we had zero bench seems to be an overstatement.

So, with those facts in mind, why do you say we had zero bench?

In 2012, we had 8 players who could reasonably contribute: Davis, Lamb, Jones, MKG, Teague, Miller, Wiltjer, Vargas. Hood was redshirted. Harrow was sitting out due to transfer.

I say this to say that numbers may not be the real issue.

Because Cal never played Thiero or Ugo and Lance sucked.Did you even watch the games?

Did you even read the thread? We aren't talking about how they were used. That is a different issue. We are talking about adding players. We had a bench. Maybe they weren't used enough but just adding more players doesn't address that kind of an issue.
So you admit that Cal is the problem in not using players right.Good to know.

There is no room for sensible posts like this on RR

Obviously sarcasm aside, Filipowski and Mitchell were and are obvious first round draft picks and Oscar was not mentioned for either round. Oscar also received 3.7 million to return (a figure that came from Pilgram) which was likely 3.5 million more than he would make in the G League . So again I ask the question why does Duke get first rounders back and we have second rounders leave?

That Cal is poor at building rosters and does not know how to build and use a bench. After 2015 it went downhill.

Yeah, but that wasn't the discussion. The discussion was on adding players to the team so we would not be short-handed. He or she complained about us not having a bench last year. We had ELEVEN players who played last year. I was curious how many do people think we honestly need. In 2012, we had 8.

When I gave a sensible to reply to the discussion, he or she or they responded, "Do you even watch the games?" LOL Why could they not just say, "Oh, I was talking about development, not numbers."

But, having said all that, the OP was about adding players and how we will be hurt by Livingston's lack of clarity. I honestly don't see that as a major issue, to be honest. Why would it be? That is a simple question!

Just hard for me to understand why Duke get Filipowski back and often get other 5 star players to return and we cannot do the same. Something seems wrong.

I just talked to a guy who is part of a D-1 program. His take on it is that Flip flopped somewhat late in the year. He felt that Flip had slid in the draft and chose NIL over other options. Of course, this is HIS opinion but I have always felt he knew his stuff. His opinion was that Flip needed another year.

I kind of agree. Flip was definitely flopping later in the season. It kind of seemed that his draft status flip-flopped compared to the preseason. The last thing thing Flip and his camp would want is to be a flop in the draft.

True he didn't have a definite draft range.
He's not Randle.
Truth is our guys have consistently been better pro prospects than there's.
Parents are also an X factor.

Wouldn't say they had 0 bench, injuries obviously hurt that.

I do prefer filling out the roster more to guard against injuries, but the hysterics on this board are over the top with there being 2 more months to set the roster and still a lot of players yet to enter the portal.

His stock must have dropped because he's older for the class after doing a Prep year. So he'll be the age of a lot of Jr's in CBB next year--well before the NCAA decided to let guys play until their 30 yrs old with a laughable Covid exemption. Still trying to figure out why another year was granted when every team completed the regular season? Some missed the NCAA Tournament but let's face it, we could've handpicked the teams who were going to make it in '20...not like it universally needed to be extended. Most teams/conferences completed their Conference Tournaments too.

Oh well enough of "Get off my lawn" geezer talk. Sorry.

So we have:

Dillingham at the 1. That’s his spot and Wagner probably fills in there when Dillingham is out. No PG is going to come here knowing Dillingham will be here.

Wagner at the 2. Sheppard is the reserve there and Reeves could also come back and play some there. No one is coming in at that spot.

Edwards at the 3. He starts there. If Reeves comes back, he plays a lot there. I don’t think a spot is being held for Livingston. We are going after Knecht and Ingram, so Livingston is likely gone.

Bradshaw, like it or not, at the 4. That’s most likely where Cal plays him. Knecht and Ingram could also play here. Collins might return.

Tshiebwe or Onyenso at the 5. I think it’s and either/or here. Onyenso is probably going to wait to see what Tshiebwe does. If Tshiebwe leaves, Onyenso is our 5. Tshiebwe stays, Onyenso leaves. Ware is the backup (I know, that’s not optimal, but it’s how I see it). Bradshaw probably sees some minutes at the 5 as well. Nobody is going to come here with that being the likely scenario. The Sharp kid from WKU might be the best bet to find another 5 man. He might be willing to come in and backup Tshiebwe or Onyenso. I don’t think he is starting material for us.

I really can’t see how Cal could be any more active in the portal. The 1 and 2 spots are spoken for. The starting spot at the 3 is locked up. The starting 4 spot is pretty much locked up. And the 5 spot is down to either Tshiebwe or Onyenso. Hard for Cal to offer much playing time to any portal guys given the current situation.

Who has come off the board that everyone is wigging out about? Ware? Who else?

Or is it just a boring Tuesday afternoon?

Yes but Cal can have his pick from the 49 left who haven't found a home. So there is a bright side.
