Either way, good or bad. As in, "I thought this kid was going to be great/terrible/average, but as it turns out, he _____________. Did not see that coming!"

The combination of Boston/Sarr…did not expect what happened with them

And Reed Sheppard of course. It’s almost magical the way he is playing. What a storyline

Players that turned out better than I thought:
Reed Sheppard, Antonio Reeves, Tyler Ulis, Chuck Hayes, Tubby's 3* recruits (Mainly Fitch and Daniels).

Players that turned out worse:
Alex Legion, Derrick Jasper (Injuries suck), Kevin Galloway, Michael Porter (I mean he had a scholarship to USC for football 🤪), Quade Green, and Parker from Tubby days.

Richard Madison
Brett Bearup
James Blackmon
Dude, get out of my head! The first name I thought of was Richard "Master Blaster" Madison. Thought he was going to be an AA stud and just never panned out. Blackmon is a good one, too, out of Marion, IN I think. Of course we didn't have all the recruiting info and videos, ratings, etc. back then.

I thought for sure Kahlil Whitney was can't miss. He looked so good coming out of high school. Way off on my part.

On the other hand, SGA surprised the heck out of me. Thought he would most definitely be a multi year project. Absolute stud.

Jodie Meeks and SGA both far exceeded my expectations. Meeks was billed as a slasher and turned into one of the best shooters we’ve ever had. SGA was supposed to be Quade Green’s backup which is crazy to think about now given his NBA status.

On the negative side, Antwain Barbour fell well short of expectations under Tubby. Barbour was never the same after his first three games in Maui. Broke his wrist, lost his starting spot and never regained his confidence. Had some nice games towards the end of his senior season that always left me wondering what might have been had he never gotten injured.

Shaedon Shar ......

My most recent one is Justin Edwards. I went on record predicting him to be the best player we’ve had in quite a few years. I thought he would Wall, AD, Fox level good. Although I was wrong, I still like him and like what he brings to our team. Now looking back, my expectations were honestly probably borderline unrealistic.

M. Estill
Pelphrey
Farmer
Feldhaus - played so well in college, Frank Persley from Scott Co. owned him and was only 6’4”. I expected nothing, but we was a good team player.

Skal/Boston/Askew - all sucked

Jemarl Baker -- he had a picture perfect shot.
Jules Camara -- big and agile.

Not Tyler Ulis. We saw the team at a downtown restaurant prior to his freshman year. It looked like Ulis was a young Henry V holding court. The players simply deferred to him. Something was up.

Couple more I overestimated:

Jon Hood - thought he would be a really good 2-3 year player and just never seemed to have "it"
Nerlens Noel - despite the injury, never really measured up, although he was a helluva defensive player

Tyler I think will go down as an all-time favorite UK player. That kid just had that alpha mentality that you can't teach. I think Izzo was crushed when he lost out on him. LOVED his game

I wasn’t personally wrong because we didn’t have the access back then , but the biggest miss I remember was Bret Bearup.

From everything we were told about him from every available media at the time was that he was a generational player.

One I remember in detail was that he was going to be better as a freshman than Robey was as a senior.

That was a huge miss by whomever did scouting reports at the time.

I saw Madison play in the Hillbrook Classic in Rupp Arena back in the day . He scored 16 points against Henry Clay and was dominated by the Miller kid that went to Western Kentucky. I left that game wondering what all the hype was about. Figured he just had a bad game but ……turns out he wasn’t really that good .
