When do you give up?

It scales down. When it gets down under 20 seconds and you're down double digits I start giving up any hope. I've had to adjust because under Cal it was getting to where if we had a deficit at the half and started the second half off bad I knew we were losing. Pope has coached them up to come back a few times now so you can't give up early.

Your scenario, with Kobe Brea on the floor, I still got hope.

I knew this one was over as soon as I saw UGA was allowed to play physical and live at the line, but we weren’t. Same as Clemson game when that big ogre had 20 rebounds but not a single foul (lol).

Officials have one job: call the game consistently for both sides. Either call fouls or let ‘em play. When you let one team play and not the other, you failed as officials. Period.

Case by case.

If we get down 10 in the first half, I usually quit out of anger. If we ever get down 20 at any point, that’s an auto quit.

I usually stay with single digit games until the end of game fouling starts

to me it’s clear the team just doesn’t have it that night. After the final min timeout last night is when I accepted the lose. With this team it’s easy to tell when they have it and when they don’t.

Let's say UK is down 12 with 1 minute and 15 seconds.

I still haven't given up. Last night it was under a minute when I realized it was a loss.

I realize some people in the game thread give up when it's 4 to 3.

So are you a fight to the end type of person or do you give up with 10 minutes to go?
If we’re down more than 15 at half I don’t give up but I don’t talk myself into a miracle win either.

If we’re down 8 or so under 5? That’s usually danger zone and I start prepping for a loss. I hate that feeling too.

Never gave up on the Duke or Gonzaga games. For some reason I can just get gut feelings on when we have a chance to come back or not. Turned last nights game off at halftime after the three by Georgia. Nothing was going our way and JR was clearly not right in the head.

Continued to check the score on my phone every few minutes and don’t think I ever saw us get within 8.

Somewhere around forty seconds left down double digits is where it begins to approach mathematical impossibility. I’m in it at least till then. I’ll keep watching until the buzzer and hoping until something like maybe ten seconds left on the clock if we’re still down double digits. But if we’re being technical, forty seconds down double digits is the time below which I’m watching and hoping with the understanding: “probably not.”

Generally if we’re down double digits with less than 40 seconds left it’s because we’re doing something wrong or not doing something right or facing bad matchups or bad refs or roster shortcomings in a way that is probably not fixable in 40 seconds.

But still, almost anything can happen and that’s part of why I love the game.

I wouldn’t call it giving up, but I can’t watch awful basketball. So I turn it to something else and follow RR or just follow the score on my phone.

It worked in the Duke game and Gonzaga game. Not so much in the Clemson and OSU game.

Last night I knew it was over around the 5 minute mark in the second half .

If we get down by 20 at any point I assume it’s over .

Anything around 10 at the half up until the 8 minute mark I still have a little hope .
I was a senior at UK when Kentucky came back with about a minute to go against Tennessee down 10. That and the 31 point comeback, and then to come back against Duke in 98. I always think there's a chance until under a minute.

If you are down double digits with 3 minutes to go and you haven't made any runs in the 2nd half, you are probably going to lose. Especially if you have played like dog crap the entire game and couldn't hit anything.

I always stay tuned in to watch the court storming and parade.

UK couldn't mount a comeback last night mainly because Georgia was getting many of their points via uncontested free throws with the clock stopped, granted to them by the refs. Hard to overcome that.

Even when in doubt I will still watch until the clock hits zero . Last night was longest ending to a game that I’ve seen in quite sometime.

Normally I’m a fight till the end kind of guy but with the officiating last night I said at about 7:45 left to go they aren’t winning this one. Even if this team had finally decided to show out the refs weren’t gonna let them win. UK was clearly the better team but lack of effort and 5 vs 8, it’s getting real old to me.

I often record and start watching from the start about an hour in. Fast forward commercials, halftime and often (esp last night) UK defensive possessions. After having a steady diet of Sampson defense for the last 10 years it is frustrating to watch this UK defense sometimes.

Yeah, I have my own nerdy formula in my head and it's definitely on a scale

Nice shot, keep liking a lot of my posts if you want to take shots, it’s clear you feel the same way as I do on a lot of stuff, but anything to get a shot in.

Just cracking a joke. You seem upset by it so sorry. Didn’t mean to offend you. Just thought your post was funny in light of your earlier comments.

Nope, Tubby trained me to go by the "just cut it to 10 with 5 mins to go and we have a chance". So I still live by that, especially with the prevalence of the three pointer in today's game.

Last night I realized it just wasn't possible to overcome 11 points with about 1:20 to go. And I was so pissed at the refs that I just shut it off and said that I'll look at the score later, but it wasn't physically possible for us against a slow-it-down UGA to get 4 stops and 4 straight three pointers to tie.

I think it's very dependent on the team.

When you have been down double digits several times in a season and you've shown the ability to comeback and fight, that changes things quite a bit.

Last night they cut it down to 5 and I thought ok we were coming back at that point. Even when they expanded it back to 13 I thought we could comeback.

This team just scores in bunches it's hard to just assume we are out of anything.

Different teams I have different mindsets about.

I gave up around here too...it wasnt so much the deficit but the unending trips to the monitor.

I have been watching UK baskeytball for almost 40 years and that was the first time I can remember turning the game off.

you could tell within 10 minutes UGA bought the SEC to get that officiating to guarantee a win for them. I turned it off and glad I did . I saw clips of all the horrendous calls after I turned it off and once again I was right.

if we played UGA at home we win by 15pts. the home court advantage used to be like around 3 pts according to vegas, this year outside of refs helping UF at our home court, the advantage is more like 13 pts and its absurd.

We got it down to 5 points and then promptly quit scoring. Last 8 minutes was awful.

Based on what we saw last night this isn't a fair question. When we cut the lead to 5(55-50) the refs took over the game for the next minute and a half. Anyone could see we had no chance of winning, the refs weren't going to allow it.
I watched to the end but after the game ended I considered(and still am) not watching any more road games(this from a fan since 1958) Maybe I'm too invested in this team for my own good. I feel strongly about what we saw last night but there is nothing I can do about it . The question is how much more of it am I willing to subject myself to watching.

When the clock reads 0:00, not a second sooner.

I think it varies by game. Last night I lost hope earlier than normal just because of how the game was going. We just couldn’t string anything together. I also thought we were out of gas with about 3 minutes left.

The call on that three-pointer was huge. He didn't seem to be touched other than Butler made some movement towards his stomach that I don't think actually hit him. That would have not been called on the other end and that changed the game.
