What's the Biggest Brawl in UK Basketball History?

I remember Richie Farmer laying out Shaq back in the early 90s.

I had read that and believed it. Thanks. Had no idea it was made up.

Well I’ll never say with certainty it was false because I wasn’t there. As far as I’ll go is to say that there’s no evidence to support it. I have to assume that if something like that did happen that it would be mentioned somewhere, either as part of the game description or later when newspaper columnists discuss the latest gossip etc. In this particular case I’ve searched multiple sources (including in both Kentucky and Pittsburgh) and have never seen anything to corroborate it. I’ve even tried contacting Ditka himself to no avail.

It didn’t come to blows but what about Ramel Bradley and Andrew Bogut? Bradley come flying out of a pile up on the floor and stood face to face to Bogut. This may be on one if UK’s intro videos.
More like Face to Chest.

Didn't Charles Hurt and Barkley have a ruckus?

The Stamper incident involved Percy Howard of Austin Peay not Perry Wallace,in a first round NCAAT game in Nashville.I was there and saw it while listening to Cawood call the game on a transistor radio. I remember Cawood's call almost word for word

"It is getting pretty rough out there,Stamper and Howard are going at it pretty good under the basket"

As the ball came up the court toward the end I was sitting,Stamper stopped at mid court in the jump circle. As Howard ran by Stamper threw I think a right cross.Howard went down on his rear end and slid all the way under a table at courtside

The rest of Cawood's call went like this as they were coming up court

"Folks this isn't going to last long.........Stamper decks him"

UK went on to win the game 106 to 100 I think
Larry Stamper knocked Perry Wallace cold with one punch, I was watching the game. It was not in the tournament, it was in the regular season. Stamper got into a fight with Bob Lackey who was marquette's best player and got him kicked out of the game. That was in the 1972 ncaa tournament. I was watching that game too. That was the same game when All McGuire tried to get into it with coach Rupp, and Stamper stepped in the middle of that too. Larry Stamper was a bad man, wasn't a very good player, but he was a bad man. That Austin Peay game was the next year 1973, When Austin Peay had Fly Williams.

Thanks for posting this. You should keep that gif permanent with all your posts. I love looking at it. Hate that we lost that game, top 5 bitter pill. But at least Riddick gave us that one precious memory. Some might say that's wrong, but that's just how classless I am. Hate me.

When I threw a nearly full 12 oz. miller lite at the tv when Laitner hit “the shot” in ‘92, just as the wife was entering the room. All out brawl ensued. Wasn’t pretty. Of course, I was “suspended “, for 3 months.
Seems like someone kicked Laitner. Or was it Hurley?

Laetner should not even have been in the game for that last shot. If he would have played on any other team in the country, he would have been thrown out of the game when he stomped on Timberlake, but the rules for duke are different than they are for every other team, except for maybe Kansas.

You are probably correct,I just don't remember the game right now.The game and events I described took place on March 15 1973 in Memorial Gym in Nashville. Marq and IU played the other game and IU won, then went on to beat UK in the next game.

The biggest UK brawl I can remember was when Jamal Magloire Knocked out Miami of Ohio’s mascot in the S16:

The More You Know:

Percy Howard went on to play in the NFL for Dallas and has a TD reception from SB10 vs. the Steelers. His only career reception and TD.

The Stamper KO of Vandy's player was before my time. I've read a few stories on here about Stamper. Someone posted a hilarious story about listening to Cawood give the play by play of Stamper getting in a fight. Wish I could have seen Stamper play. He sounds like an old school enforcer.
He backed down from no one. I recall during Rupp;s last win he abused Marquette underneath. Bob Lackey took a cheap shot at Stamper and he took a swing at Lackey that would have knocked him out had it landed. I saw him playing in an independent league tournament at Prestonsburg in 1976 and the official made a bad call against him. He grabbed the ball, slammed it down then threw it at the official. Took several of his teammates to stop him from hammering the official.

It didn't come to blows but would have loved to have seen the 2 fight it out but does anyone remember when Mashburn stood up to Shaq? Wasnt Mashburns dad a former Boxer?
Yes, his father was a former boxer that fought against Muhammad Ali once.

I remember reading somewhere that Bennett and Sam Bowie got "into it" during practice. This would've been November 1983, prior to the start of the season. Bowie, a 5th year Senior, and Bennett, a Freshman.
Supposedly, Joe B. stood off to the side and just smiled; he apparently enjoyed the toughness between the two players!
Never heard that one but don't doubt it one bit. I had also heard that Todd May got into a fight with Derrick Hord in practice and put May on the floor.

For you old timers like me, I remember a near-fight between Charles Hurt and Sean Tuohy of Ole Miss. Maybe 1980'ish? Somehow Tuohy got knocked down or fell down or something, and Hurt, being the gentleman that he was, tried to pick him up and set him back on his feet. Tuohy took exception and took a few wild but harmless swings. Fortunately for Tuohy, Hurt kinda backed off and put his arms out wide like, WTF? He would've kicked Tuohy's **** in if he got angry.
I recall that game and I believe it was in 1982, although I could be a year off. Don't know what Tuohy was thinking but I can't imagine what would have happened.

If I remember correctly, KY would not have won that game if Stamper and Ronnie Lyons were not inserted into the game ... Stamper for rebounding and Lyons for ball-handling to beat the AP press, as Connors and Flynn struggled against the pressure.

Would love to see a replay of games from back then, I didn't really began to follow UK until Hall and the Super Kittens took over but vaguely remember Rupps later teams.

Larry Stamper knocked Vanderbilt's Perry Wallace cold with one punch. The biggest fight that I remember though was Minnesota and Ohio State.in I think 1968 or 69, that was a biggie. The baseball player Dave Winfield was involved in that one. Ohio State's 7 foot center Luke Witte had a promising career going, but was never the same after that big fight. The Arkansas coach's father was the coach at Minnesota at that time.
I thought he hit Vanbredakoff

I was at that game, and I remember it as Minniefield and Touhy. Minniefield dropped him with an elbow at mid court. The Ole Miss fans then started throwing stuff at the UK bench. I remember Bowie shielding himself with a towel over his head.

Minniefield? Wow, all these years I pictured it as Charles Hurt, because I thought I remembered the announcers talking about they wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of "Charles Atlas". But since you were there, I'll take your word for it.

It's been a long time, and my memory isn't what it used to be. So I could be wrong, but that is how I remember it. We may be talking about separate incidents as well.
