I think for those of us that are not big professional sports followers, the amateur aspect was something we appreciated. I get that money drives everything now, there’s no mistaking that. But, if I wanted all the contract drama, holdouts, guys not honoring their word, I’d watch pro sports. But, I don’t care for any of that stuff. Not to mention the intangible stuff is going away as well.
Players bounce around now from team to team, there is no school loyalty anymore. Kids that would have stayed 4 years (like Travis Perry) and possibly become contributors later in their careers, not to mention fan favorites, won’t stay now. You can’t tell me mercenaries “get” the UL/UK rivalry. The hatred that goes along with that rivalry was born out of guys going to those schools and playing in that game every year, losing to them and having to hear about for another year. Cinderellas are a dying breed. That’s all gone now!
Just realize that there were a lot of great things about the way college hoops used to be too. Not everything has gotten better.
