What County did you graduate in?

I had a geography professor in college that said two things about KY and it's counties.

1) KY has the most counties per land mass, so the smallest average county size (per sq mile).

2) KY is the only state where most residents associate with their county rather than their nearest town/city, i.e. "where you from" "I'm from Allen county" and not "I'm from Scottsville". Don't know if KY is the only place, but interesting anyway

My experience with this is people will ask me where I'm from and I say the small towns name. They never heard of it. I say the county. They have no idea. I say the county seat and then most will get it. So jumping to the county first, just makes more sense.

No point telling people the name of an obscure town that no one out of this area has ever heard of.

I'm also betting that people from Lexington and Louisville don't say the county first for that same reason. Most people have heard of it.

My hypothesis would be, the smaller the town the more likely you're going to get the county first.

Russellville is not in Russell County.

Morganfield is not in Morgan County.
Logansport is not in Logan County
Morgan is not in Morgan County
Cumberland is not in Cumberland County
Clay City is not in Clay County
Fort Campbell is not in Campbell County
Fort Knox is not in Knox County
Carlisle is not in Carlisle County

I am 9-1 in all sports against Tipton Co. in high school. they have years of course. Made a living owning Covington.

hey, the closer you get to Memphis…..
Very true, I live in Arlington now. Good community that doesn’t have the Memphis trash. (Yet) but like roaches and roof rats, they will come!

Also I think it goes partly back to this thread topic, many counties in the state have only 1 high school. So they go by the county name (Monroe County) or at least have the county in the name (Allen County-Scottsville), and even many counties with multiple high schools have one or more school with the county name (Warren East, Warren Central).

Here is an interesting, if not bizarre, bit of Kentucky City-County trivia. Except for a few examples, like Harlan (Harlan), Shelbyville (Shelby), Owenton (Owen), Henderson (Henderson), Greenup (Greenup) and Pikeville (Pike), have you ever noticed how many cities are not located in their namesake counties ??

Perryville is not in Perry County
Simpsonville is not in Simpson County
Taylorsville is not in Taylor County
Hopkinsville is not in Hopkins County
Booneville is not in Boone County
Franklin is not in Franklin County
Scottsville is not in Scott County
Campbellsburg and Campbellsville are not in Campbell County
Martin is not in Martin County
Nicholasville is not in Nicholas County
Whitley City is not in Whitley County
Grayson is not in Grayson County
Madisonville is not in Madison County
Jeffersonville is not in Jefferson County
Lawrenceburg is not in Lawrence County
Owensboro is not in Owen County
Morgantown is not in Morgan County
Jackson is not in Jackson County
Lewisport is not in Lewis County
Hardinsburg is not in Hardin County

... and you can probably think of some more examples ... really kinda WILD !!
Used to be Christian county was wet and Bourbon county was dry , but I’m thinking Bourbon county voted to go go wet .
