What are you listening to?

So, I’ve been listening to the late great Hound Dog Taylor. Started jamming out to his hit song, “Give Me Back My Wig”. When trying to find a video of Hound Dog playing it live, I came across this gem. SRV covering it and playing with a slide. In all the videos I’ve watched of SRV I don’t ever recall seeing him playing with a slide before. Love it!

So the past 4-5 days I've been going down the King Gizzard rabbit hole going all the way down to see what's on the other side. And the more I keep digging, the more I f'n love it.

Just insanely talented musicians who can actually jam and keep it dynamic and captivating. Sort of like a psychedelic Mars Volta with some math rock, 70s jam vibes, and metal thrown in. Their drummer must never skip leg days either, holy lord. The album recordings don't really do much justice to what they do live, but some of my favorite cuts I've recently dug into:

Drip, drip from the tap don't slip (don't slip on the drip)

(the lick at 5:35 is sublime)

Everything they recorded before 2020 had two drummers playing on just about every song. Played that way live too…with the drummers facing each other. You can see it here at the 0:30 mark on one of my favorites…

The amount of talent that these 4 guys have takes my breath away.

That said, imagine my reaction the first time I saw them. 😄 😄 😄

"I've hit the wrong link it would seem. No, wait, this sounds like them. That's interesting... That black guy must be a REALLY good teacher." LOL

I mean, I wasn't expecting George Clinton/Paliament, but I also didn't expect the St. Margaret's High School chess club either.

Something reminded me of Senor Wences. Most of you, I'm afraid, have never heard of him. What a fantastic act. Not really music, but I've watched several clips.

Anytime I see someone discovering KG&TLW I upvote. I'm a metal head so their thrash metal endeavors are my favorite (Infest the Rat's Nest & PetroDragonic) but Nonagon Infinity keeps bringing me back. What a tremendous band.

Sports by Viagra Boys is one of my kids favorite jam songs. I love those guys.

It's been a few years since I've heard this song but I wanted to share because I thoroughly enjoy it.

I went and saw 38 Special at the KY State Fair last night so I'm taking in a heavy dose of their music today.

Today, I discovered Lenny Breau. (pronounced Bro'). He's like someone designed a superhero guitarist. Chet Atkins + Wes Montgomery + Julian Bream. Until this morning I'd never even heard his name much less listened to him.

Monte Montgomery used to come to Lexington on a pretty regular basis. The sonic quality of his live shows is incredible, especially if up front by his amplifiers, like the grey-haired dude. He knows !! Of his many fabulous solos, this one is my favorite ... it is very emotive !! Last time in Lex was 05/20/2010. He does not tour much outside of Texas anymore, unfortunately.

So, I’ve been obsessed with music my whole life. About 30 years ago I got hooked on Blues and ever since have listened to and researched all the blues I can find. And in those 30 years I’ve not found anything that can top this recording. Muddy Waters, the godfather of the Blues. Accompanied by Pinetop Perkins, James Cotton, “Steady Rollin” Bob Margolin, and Willie Smith. Johnny Winter produced the album and provided the hoots and hollers on this studio recording. Enjoy!

I'm getting ready to retire and I can't help but think of Michael Scott and rock and roll part 2.

I can just see me closing the office door and dancing to this all day. Not that I dance.

Notice the young ladies from the 1970s in this video. Society is really effed up. I assume that's the UK. It could be USA but I don't think so, or the Netherlands or France or Germany.

I came across this list of the top 200 artist of all time from 2023 by the Rolling Stone. I know there are probably a lot of things people would disagree about but who in the world was voting on this list? I mean Chris Stapleton at 170 is a travesty. How many other artist can sing everything from bluegrass, to country, to rock and sound like it is the genre they should be singing? The guy has been the lead singer for the bluegrass band The SteelDrivers, covered Metallica's Nothing Else Matters, brought coaches to tears with the National Anthem and won numerous awards such as album of the year, artist of the year and song writer of the year for his country music but he is 170th on the top artist of all time? You are trying to tell me that Courtney Love is higher on the list than Stapleton. 🤣🤣

A Top 200 artists list across all of history and all genres is an incredibly stupid exercise anyway. Rankings and all time shit in sports and music do nothing for me.

Is it just vocalists? Not a single jazz player in the top 20? The foundation of all modern American music imo.

EDIT: it’s just vocals. My bad.
