Wenyen - Breakout year coming up?

I think you guys comparing wenyen with josh carrier and matt pilgrim are going to be pleasantly surprised. It should be obvious he has the potential to be a great college player.

Well ....... over the last several years with Cal, I've learned some things like the staff leaks info like this every summer and each time its to help a certain player's image. Most of the time like Humphries last year.... it turns into a nothing burger so dont get too hyped about Gabriel just yet.

Disagree completely. Chances are last summer they saw what we all saw in the UNC game I think bs fouls kept Hump who's per 40 stats were outstanding ever getting into a rhythm. In the past I have heard bs from the summer. Not under Cal. For example we all heard Wall was showing out and Bledso was gonna be a player to. Last year we also heard Hawk was playing well in the summer and he would contribute. Which he did. Summer before that it was Willis turns out he was pretty solid as a Jr. Heard things like Ulis is tough that he wouldn't back down from cuz. Guess what Ulis was tough.

Why is that? Aren't those guys ranked around the same spot or lower than Wenyen was AND Wenyen was in a class considered better? So based on what should those guys be ranked ahead of Wenyen? And in the fact that I'm sure you and others think Cal is a very good developer of talent, and none of the new guys are considered a lotto OAD talent, why would Wenyen not have the upper hand in the starting spot???

Right. We hear this about someone different every offseason and it turns out to be empty hype.

I'm guessing we'll go as guys like Knox, Diallo, Washington and Vanderbilt go.

Gabriel better have made a huge leap to get minutes over our other 3's and 4's. Knox. Washington and Vanderbilt are all the real deal.

Why would they get more opportunity if everything is based off of what they did in H.S and ranking (seems similar to what Wenyen did in h.S and ranking) minus having a year of college under their belt.

Basically it's another "the freshmen are better because we haven't seen their warts yet and they dominated kids younger and no where near as skilled as they were". Which when you think about it makes zero sense. Only makes sense for the obvious OAD types ala Anthony Davis, MKG, Fox, Monk etc

For Wenyen Gabriel to have a "breakout" season, he will have to get on the floor for enough minutes to make that happen. When other posters were blasting Wenyen last year, I said he is a much better basketball player than most people think. Too many people around here will give up on a freshman if he doesn't play like an NBA all star from the get go in November. Gabriel didn't have the physical strength to be OAD, but he is a long, skilled player who runs the floor. After an offseason in the weight room, I am sure Gabriel will be an improved player. But with PJ Washington, Kevin Knox, Jarred Vanderbilt here now, playing time for forwards will be tough to get this year. So I think Gabriel will be a better player for sure, but I don't know about a "breakout". That just depends on opportunity.

Gabriel is one of the kids on our roster I won't worry about improving. The kid is a hard worker and goes after it 100%. With kids like that, you don't have to worry about failure from. He obviously wasn't the monster we all hoped he would be last season, but luckily for us he still has time to adjust and become one of the most talented players in college basketball. He probably won't be our go to guy this coming season. but the talent and work ethic is there for Cal and staff to coach up. Remember, not everyone of these talented freshman are going to be finished products from day 1. Going into his SO season, I expect this kid to bring it every game this coming season.

We have Gabriel and SKJ that came in 5* players as freshman. Gabriel had a decent start last year and was even hitting from 3 point range before he went through a bad spell at the end of the season. I believe that Gabriel, SKJ, and Wynyard could help us a lot in the frontcourt this year.

I like what all you said but I don't think he goes after it quite 100% on a the court, if you ask me anyway. Which you didn't but thought I'd throw it out there anyway. I'd really like to see him go after it 100% on the court. It would really help him and his confidence.

Of course UMM comes to Butters defense. Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumbass

Yes this is a terrible thread compared to all the other gems on page one....only thread on here thsts good is on page 6 and growing...the rest i just go right by

It does sound like Gabriel is making a claim for the starting PF. After watching the U19 tourney I think Washington will play some small ball 5 this year. That could be bad news for Richards and SKJ at the end of games.

I'm hoping Gabriel and SKJ both start and are on the floor at crunch time. I would love to see some leadership from these guys. I think we are going to need that experience and maturity down the stretch.

My hope is to see this lineup:

Starters

G Green
G Diallo
F Knox
F Gabriel
F Killeya-Jones

Key Reserves

G Gilgeous-Alexander
F Vanderbilt
F Washington
F Richards

Baker and Wynyard play spot minutes.

Why the hype train about Gabriel but 0 for SKJ starting? The only damn difference between the two is that we didnt have a bam at the 4 to force Gabriel to sit all season like Bam did to SKJ.
