I'm sorry I didn't realize the players you have listed played shi%%y the year before. i would almost bet several of those guys didn't have a season before. Bad examples...

Wow, take it easy, my friend. I said nothing outlandish in my post. The OP said nothing about limiting the topic to just Cal players so not sure why you attacked me on that. Have you not been a UK fan long enough to remember the history of summer reports and how one player or another looked great but that never transferred to the real season? That's all I was referring to. Maybe I've just been around UK basketball longer than you to remember summer reports before Cal got here. We're talking about summer basketball, not the potential of great players you have on your list, please keep that in mind.
He missed the part where the player getting a great summer report had a very subpar year the season before

So... what? There are far more examples of guys living up to the summer hype rather than failing. People like you only choose the negative outliers to reaffirm some unfounded negative attitue. You must be new as a UK fan. Before Cal, we didn't give up on kids after their Freshman years.
You must be new, have you never heard "summer reports"

I know that you're infamous on here for being a moron, so I have to ask, what makes you feel as though you're so special that a thought such as this deserves its own thread? There is already a Gabriel thread discussing this, so why start this one that is merely a thought/repeat of old news? Do you really think you're that important, or are you just a massive troll? I'm guessing a combination of the two.

I never really speak to it, but it is really odd to find someone who day after day trolls using different accounts, and having the time and the will to continue it over and over. Trolling with these accounts was funny about 10 years ago, now it's just copy cat bs and regurgitated crap.

I hope it's someone under 20 that does this sht. If not, you're a wierd dude that probably needs a hobby and a girl.

Unfortunately there's not much to be said about doing well in our practices. Yes we have the best players, but you can figure out bad habits going against the same guy every day in practice and exploit that. It's how you handle adversity against an equally talented guy you've never seen before in a game that matters that tells us how you've grown.

That being said, I'm stoked to think of the improvement Gabriel can make. He'll never be a pogo stick and he'll never be a bruiser. I still am not convinced he's a first round pick after this year. His ceiling is an average athlete 6'9 dirty work 4 man who can hit an open 3, which is perfectly fine for college and for us. His game will probably model a lot of what PPat's was in his final year with us in the sense of being a guy who gets dunks and put backs and rebounds, and hits an open 3 here and there as a trailer on the play. Maybe a set play out of a time out, but mostly a guy who'd take the shot as the 3rd or 4th option in an offensive set. I'd be totally fine with that, as our team is too loaded to need him to be a 15/10 guy. On an even more loaded team than last year, specifically at the forward spot, I'd be happy with 5-7ppg and 4-5rpg and a block. Hit 35% from 3 when you're open and knock them free throws down when you get fouled for offensive rebound put backs.

For Wenyen Gabriel to have a "breakout" season, he will have to get on the floor for enough minutes to make that happen. When other posters were blasting Wenyen last year, I said he is a much better basketball player than most people think. Too many people around here will give up on a freshman if he doesn't play like an NBA all star from the get go in November. Gabriel didn't have the physical strength to be OAD, but he is a long, skilled player who runs the floor. After an offseason in the weight room, I am sure Gabriel will be an improved player. But with PJ Washington, Kevin Knox, Jarred Vanderbilt here now, playing time for forwards will be tough to get this year. So I think Gabriel will be a better player for sure, but I don't know about a "breakout". That just depends on opportunity.

There is a problem with all the examples for the most part on each side. Most of the players brought up, regardless of which side they were used for, either didn't play before or was very limited in action. Don't know whether this report will translate to the season, but there is no need to either put unrealistic expectations, or dump on a player before the season even starts. Let's just leave it at it appears via reports that he has improved.

I am so confused right now. So in saying that the "Breaking News" that you stated in your original post is great news, are you complimenting yourself or did you forget to log out and back in under a different username before you bragged on your original post?

Got em

Why do you care if he starts 8 threads on Gabriel...does it really hurt you if that happens???? I will hang up and listen

Based on their composite rankings coming in, Gabriel is the second best returning Sophomore in the nation. Only Bridges ranked ahead of him.

This is in a class that produced 10 of the first 11 picks in the draft and 16 first rounders.

Now, Bridges had a much better season last year, but keep in mind that Bridges was the focal point of his offense. Gabriel played on a team with three lottery picks, plus several veterans, including a guy who just signed with the Pistons.

I am not sure we should dismiss him just yet.

On normal teams nearly 5 points and nearly 5 rebounds per game in just under 18 minutes per game, from a Freshman, would be reason for optimism.

I think there is potential for Gabriel to start, maybe be the third or fourth option on this team and maybe lead the team in rebounding.

If he doesn't do it this year on this team, then it's probably time to put the bust label on him.

Are you the unc fan?

He is and he talks crap about us on the UNC boards.

I would like to see Gabriel and Killeya-Jones start at the 4 and 5. Or at least get significant minutes.

To me, this is the ideal rotation:

Green(30)/Gilgeous-Alexander(10)
Diallo(30)/Baker(5)/Knox(5)
Knox(20)/Vanderbilt(20)
Gabriel(20)/Washington(20)
Killeya-Jones(20)/Richards(20)

Green- 30mpg
Diallo- 30mpg
Knox- 25mpg
Gabriel- 20mpg
Killeya-Jones- 20mpg
Vanderbilt- 20mpg
Washington- 20mpg
Richards- 20mpg
Gilgeous-Alexander- 10mpg
Baker- 5mpg

That keeps the best players on the floor, while still taking advantage of the depth of this roster. Gabriel and SKJ give us a little bit of experience.

I would probably scale back to an 8-man rotation by March, though.

That's great news.I want to see him have a real good sophomore season. I still think he will start.
I would rather players look really mediocre in the summer, and really good in the winter.

It's like when I go to the range and hit balls. I could hit 40 in a row really solid, and then go to the course and shank my first tee shot out of bounds. The moral of this is to not waste your good play practicing.

A very good post, what is a reasonable expectation for Gabriel in the coming year? Can/will he average 12+ and 7? If he does that we will be pretty good,I think there are many variables with this team, not the least of which is who(in the front court positions) plays the lion's share of minutes. We will have 5 players (6 if you factor in Wynyard) and a swing player or 2 from the back court competing for time at 3 positions

The studs will be as follows:
Knox
Diallo
Gabriel
Washington
Vanderbilt
I got a feeling that Richards is gonna be this teams X factor..he's an athletic big with something to prove. I think he'll lead Uk in blocked shots by a wide gap. He's an NBA first round talent that i hope mans the 5 spot all year.

Let's see what he looks like when the games count. We hear every off season about this player or that player lighting it up. But struggles to come through in a real game.
