Well done Coach Cal...

I get tired of all the whiners and complainers on this site. Kuddos to the players leaving to chase their dreams - while I am not sure I would have made the same decision in all their cases, we need to be excited for them. One of the reasons we get the recruits we do is Coach Cal and his staffs ability to coach them, improve their games and enable them to reach their goal.

Also Cal backed off Green, Todd and Christopher and landed the #1 class. How thankful are we that he focused on Clarke, Boston, Askew, Jackson, Ware and Fletcher over those going overseas or deciding for their hometown school.

We should be appreciative at what Coach Cal and his staff do year in and year out for our fanbase. I realize we will be young, very young, but we have an incredibly talented group of recruits coming in - lots to be excited about!

Real cool story. Equally annoying are the ones who tell other fans how to fan.

Yes, people are entitled to their opinion in terms of ‘how to fan’ or what they believe a player should do [in terms of Draft decisions], but that perspective / opinion can be incorrect.

Objectively, no one can say a young man is wrong for making their own decision; the decision to declare for professional options is solely up to that specific player—whether it is right or wrong is solely based on that specific kid’s opinion. The same can be said for those who decide to transfer to another institution. Maybe they’re just doing what is best for them?

I believe this is what frustrates people who have to watch and listen to a certain segment of the fan base complain about Draft decisions. Cal just finished year eleven at Kentucky; if you’re unhappy about what takes place or you still haven’t adjusted with the change by now then you can’t be helped. Go ask Indiana how the “traditional” ways are going for them...

And if some on here can’t accept a segment of the fan base is tired of all the transfers and 7/8 guys leaving every year, depleting the roster, maybe you all should find another board to post in. See how this works.

Yes, they could do that ... but, you are—still—objectively wrong.

The people who complain about the transfers and draft decisions are the true source of the problem; if those people didn’t get upset over something that has nothing to do with them or their life, then other people wouldn’t complain about that objectively wrong perspective or feel a need to defend these young men for doing what is best for them.

There are a few who claim to be fans and bitch and moan about everything and I mean everything Cal does , Zaytovencat and Calisthebomb are at the top of that list . If Haarms decides to come to Kentucky they may have. melt down and i hope like hell they do !!

Is there a place where more people with your point of view post?

Cals recruiting high school players is amazing and with everything that happened with players this year might be his most impressive to date. What Cal is awful at is getting the players that should come back that are ALREADY on the team. If he could’ve gotten some players back from previous teams (let’s start with Jodie Meeks from his very first year here) then he would have MULTIPLE championships here.

That is one hell of an assumption to make about my life—or anyone’s life—with absolutely zero empirical evidence or concrete knowledge to show for such an egregious statement.

I’m a rational person who prefers to maintain a perspective—regardless of subject—based on logic and objective fact. I will never crucify or look down upon anyone for doing what they believe is best for them or their own interest.

Yes, this is ‘the Commonwealth’s team.’ However, that doesn’t mean we can say the same about the lives of these young men and their respective decisions. It’s arrogant, selfish, and blatantly ignorant to believe otherwise.

For the crowd who continues to criticize these young men about their lives and what they decide to do for themselves personally ... at least bring an objective argument against those of us who choose to support them and defend them publicly. Empower people; don’t look to bring them down.

What is a “fan”? Some that that watches a sport. The fan has no input into that sport, a fan only watches for enjoyment. Once the enjoyment wanes, how much longer will said sport last? I submit that fans mean more to the support of said team than any coach.

Transfers are rampant across the board. While I don’t like losing the Juzang’s of our teams, i don’t mind seeing the Quade’s transfer. Better for both parties. If it weren’t for transfers, we wouldn’t have gotten some really good players.

I will take the kids Cal has brought in the last 11 years over any other school out there, regardless of what those kids decided to do and how long they were at UK and be happy for them. To me, it has been a great ride with some amazing ups, and a few downs.

Of course you would. You're actually paying attention. Well thought out post

I can see both sides of this argument. I’m kinda on the fence myself. Do I think we should retain players that aren’t necessarily ready to make the NBA jump? Absolutely, I do. At the same time, I can’t fault them for leaving and chasing their lifelong dreams.

This is a topic that the wife and I even have right here at home. We most recently discussed this just yesterday. I keep saying that Cal is loyal to his players and wants to see them be successful and get drafted. My wife, OTOH, keeps saying that Cal works for the University of Kentucky and not the NBA. She’s right. She always is. That’s just the way it is. [laughing]

There’s no need to thank me.

What does any of that nonsense have to do with players choosing to stay another year in school, opt for the professional route, or transfer to play for another program? Short answer: it doesn’t. It is their decision and no one should ever fault them for doing what is in their best interest.

With the way many if you choose to act, along with the way(s) you treat many of these players on social media / messaging boards, it is amazing we still have the opportunity to sign some of the top players in the country.

You want to help empower kids and help the coaching staff convince some of these young men to return to Kentucky? Then start treating them as one of us [as human above all else], rather than a commodity that you see as a means to full fill your own personal desires.

Again, with the amount of scrutiny and criticism that these players take from people who couldn’t even get off the bench at their local YMCA, it truly is amazing they still have a desire to play for our program.

Some of you should be ashamed for the way you treat and look at these young men. We’ve had great kids who represent our team and state proudly ... grow up and get off your lawn.

Cal has actually ramped up his recruiting, he knows players can go to small schools like a Georgia or Memphis and still get to the NBA as a top picks. He is after good character kids, and he will start adding kids that will play 2-3 years, mixed in with Studs. We will be fine. Cal won't leave the cupboard bare like 2013 again.

Cal will have another COY type effort next year I am sure. Even more so once he completely rebuilds his roster.

This is the longest post I have ever made and I have been reading this site for far longer than I ever
registered. My post are rare. I come to get real information and occasionally it happens but that is becoming more and more rare. I remember when this site was what the football forum is now. Sharing information and hopes. Not anymore.

Life is not about extremes. Becoming happy, sad, delicious and angry come from happenings in your daily life. Real joy in life comes from a totally different place. For me it is in my faith. It comes in different places for others. The point is if you continue to live your life in extremes based on things that happen in your daily life (or others lives) then your life becomes dependent on others and “things”.

Personally that’s how I see sports. How I deal with decisions that others make. It’s not my decision and no matter my opinion or belief whether it is good or bad it is not mine to make. I can become very excited if the basketball/football team win or become very upset if they lose, but then it is over because it is just a single thing that day that happened in my total life.

This is not advice. I’m not trying to tell anyone how to live their life. If you want to continue to rely on the outcome of your favorite sports teams/television show/actor or player then be ready to live your life on a continuous roller coaster with extreme highs and lows daily. I prefer to live my life life differently.

Well, before you fall off your high horse, I have not bashed any of these players, my problem is with the system and the culture Cal has created here. Now, since you directed your holier than tho rant at me, go find one post I have made bashing theses players. I will wait.

You are nothing but a basher. All you know is bashing Cal and UK.

It is awesome you have chosen to live your life this way. I am probably the second happiest guy on the planet behind ya. You and I would probably get along very well. But I choose to go ape s&$1 when my team , UK loses. It’s the way I am built, and I am not ashamed to yell at the TV, follow recruiting, attend games and cheer, and add a little emotion to something I enjoy watching. It’s why I am a fan. I don’t critique anyone who chooses another route. For me, life is short and I intend to enjoy it watching my college compete in sports and I will live with the consequences! Athletics is an emotional event. Thank you for your post!

How am I on my ‘high horse’ when I simply stated the truth? There’s nothing ‘holier’ about what I have said; I simply countered the point(s) you were attempting to make with objectivity.

I don’t know anything about your previous posts; it is irrelevant to this specific thread. You started our exchange because you chose to defend people who criticize and complain about our players for their personal decisions that they make for themselves—all of which have no impact or effect from those decisions on anyone else.

What you previously stated [in regards to players and their personal decisions] has nothing to do with Cal and how he operates his program—this is an entirely different topic. Cal did not create this system or the culture; the parameters of this current system were established by the NCAA. Cal simply does one thing—which he does better than anyone else—and that is to bring in the best talent possible and develop it a high-level. And he continues to do that because he helps prepare top-talent for their professional careers better than anyone else.

The culture of ‘one and done’ was brought upon by the NCAA and NBA when they started restricting kids from declaring for the Draft immediately out of high school. Kids leaving early is simply a business decision that they make for themselves. Cal will never encourage anyone to return who shouldn’t comeback if they are ready for a professional career; but, he does encourage kids to return who need to—which is also something he can not force them to do. Why? Because it’s their own personal decision, not his.

This isn’t his ‘system’ or his ‘culture;’ it’s merely a byproduct of his ability to recruit the best players and develop players at a high-level. Kids who leave early on their own accord isn’t a culture ... it’s a personal decision. Don’t blame Cal.

Sounds like you haven't enjoyed it as much as you would like.

They could do that; but, they could also choose to transfer if they don’t like the new coach—more often than not kids receive immediate eligibility elsewhere in that kind of situation.

I don’t think we can worry about that now. Just enjoy the ride until it’s finally over.

Lol. I have been known to yell at the tv and change the channel to keep from having a melt down. I just try to leave it at the door and not degrade and criticize the coach and players. But I will yell and scream with you every game from my recliner. Go Big Blue!
