We found the right formula

The question is why did it take so long to figure that out? The pick and roll with Ulis and whoever is an obvious weapon and should have been utilized from game 1 IMO. We started running a lot of pick and rolls with Knight and Harrelson in 2010-2011 and it helped a ton and was effective. I'm glad Cal has went back to it finally. Let's see if it is viable long term this season (I think it will be).

I think another thing we did well was Murray and Briscoe weren't forcing things. They were patient and took what the defense was giving them. Our backcourt trio just had 3 turnovers between them, 1 each.

The key I was glad to see was that our half court offense had some purpose to it. We had a strategy to create a shot. Before today, it looked like we just made passes around the perimeter that had no purpose.

I think Murray in particular has been much better in recent games at not forcing things. He's stopped driving into traffic and losing the ball on a regular basis. I think he's starting to get things figured out at this level, and with this team. Briscoe had his best game. If he can shoot like that the Cat's will be a much better team. Cal obviously wants him in there.

Now if someone could just please show he and Lee how to shoot FT's. A combined 0-7 tonight. No excuse for that. None. When either shoots a FT the best we can hope for is to get the rebound because it's a given their going to miss.

And they're just going to keep getting better at it. Not particularly saying this to you, but just generally speaking. They're called freshman for a reason. They're still learning, growing and getting better each and every day.

All of this at this level is completely new to them. It takes time. These are the exact reasons that Cal hasn't benched them for Dom, Willis, Mulder or whoever else some of the folks on this board keep harping for.

UK has used the pick and roll all season, I have no idea what some of you have been watching. They ran it more tonight because Bama couldn't or wouldn't defend it.

The difference tonight was the play of the bigs. The problem is, I'm not sure you can count on consistent effort like that from Poythress

I think we turned a corner today.
The key now is to not regress the way we did v LSU.
Keep moving forward and we will end up around a 4 seed and a threat in the sweet 16.

Always love a UK win but not gonna get too excited over this one. Saw some good things. Rebounding was way better, Brisoce hopefully got a confidence boost, Alex of course, and Murray cut down on the turnovers.

Gonna be baby steps with this team. I'm afraid some things that happened tonight might be fools gold. One thing that will have to change that didn't happen. Skal has got to be a factor at least on one end of the floor.

Ky played the whole game with great D , plus they looked for Poy inside posting up or pick and roll, that has been there all yr but Ky use it last night, Brisco hit some big shot in the second half, but everytime he shoots I will say O no, but last night he was hitting them, wish he could hit some of his free throws..

Once we drop to 15th and lose the next game there will be a new formula. Probably one without cocaine

Lots of folks were calling for Mulder over Briscoe but LSU was a travesty due to the rebounding/defense. The offense was decent at 67 points (far from great, but decent).

UK has to play good defense and rebound to have a chance each game. The offense is going to have highs and lows due to UK's lack of scoring depth, but they have the pieces to be a really good defensive team with elite athletes down low and ballhawks like Ulis, Briscoe, Hawkins, and Matthews out on the perimeter. We saw the result of that yesterday.

If Alex plays hard we are capable of beating anyone, if not we aren't. It's that simple.

This is exactly it. UK has to have a third scorer to have a chance, just like they did in 2011 with Knight-Lamb-Jones.

Without Jones doing what he did on that team, UK never makes a run on March. The same is true of this current team. UK needs Alex to give them effort on both sides of the court every game. If it doesn't happen, UK will bow out in the first weekend. It's as simple as that.

The right formula after 1 game? Let's wait to see if Poythress sleep walks through the next game or not.

Exactly my opinion. While I appreciate the OPs thought and enthusiasm, we need to see more consistency, especially from Poy and Lee.
It did work well last night - let's see them do this against a team with a decent frontcourt.

It was an SEC team on the road, and they are a good team. They played very physical and we didn't back down. They made a run at us and we didn't flinch, we won going away. What do you want ?
Didn't say I wanted anything... I just don't understand some of the guys who get on here and this team is really not very good right now ,but yet you win one game against a very average team and you're a top 5 team..we have a long way to go to be close to top 5 is all I'm saying
