Is Langford hurt or just not playing well?
You could see him behind the bench laying down instead of sitting down. He did it in 1st Half and prior his entrance and after he came out. Back Spasms are a tricky thing and honestly hard to gauge a pain threshold of a teenager. Not being critical, just saying, surprised to hear a young man is having this issue.
As for the game, PJ Washington was great, other then what BostonCat made a great point about--the silly fouls. That will carry over to NCAA basketball and especially with SEC officials. Good thing that position is one of depth for UK, because the cheap fouls will cost minutes. When on the court, he was fantastic. Again, I see potential for him to be a solid 70% area FT shooter. It's about concentration as the stroke isn't bad at all.
Diallo wasn't following through on his jumper and was agitated all game. Italy was the first team (won't be the last) to play very physical and take some cheap fouls. He's got to play through that--and will. Jumper looks so much better in terms of balance/legs then in HS, just needs to focus on the hold/follow through after.
Wiley/McCoy. Felt McCoy was the better of the two today in terms of all around, but Wiley did a great job on defensive glass. Such a presence and like both of their FT strokes--especially since Wiley will go to the line a lot in college (and again-we know he will in SEC play)
Quickley has been impressive in terms of adding to his performances. Today he was really doing a better job of pushing the ball and making plays for teammates. Nice looking shot and shot selection. Had the jitters game and into 1st Half of last game but since his layup/and 1 he's been relaxed and playing great.
Reddish is a great looking shooter. Always looks like jumper is going in and really been consistent.
Louis King is the utility guy, does a lot of the dirty work and fills column up. 4 pts, 4 Reb, 2 assists and plays best man defense on team IMO.
Pritchard is having to play differently then at Oregon, but he'll have some good moments. Saw the criticism above and I've got some coming on another player below, but team did make a nice run with his group out there to end 1st Half and get margin in double digits.
Huerter isn't hitting shots like he's capable of, but liked his floor game the past 2 days. Much improved in other aspects. He gets bodied out of position a lot as that 2nd Unit is smaller when they go McCoy, King, Huerter, and smaller guards (maybe Romeo Langford can play moving forward and help with some versatility).
Carsen Edwards provided a nice spark to the team in 1st Half and had some very good moments. He's always been a score first type, but he's set up some teammates, had a few nice extra passes and hit some shots. Team is going to need one of he/Huerter/Pritchard to hit shots as they get deeper into tournament and prefer if all did--but 1/2 of them on that 2nd Unit going to need to hit shots to warrant time as they'll face some tougher teams this weekend.
Josh Okogie. I can't stand to watch him play. He had a good stat game against Angola, but I've yet to see him make a pass when team is on a break--it could be 2 teammates ahead of him and he'll dribble and try to finish (usually misses at least once) and a lot of his rebound stats are off his own misses or uncontested. Very sloppy with ball and after 3 games, not a fan of his style/approach to a game. Efficient offensive basketball is about player/ball movement offensively and taking good shots--but passing on that for a great shot. He's about taking a shot.........and teammates are there to get his misses and give him another shot. If Langford shows he's healthy and back to form, this is guy I expect to see minutes cut.
Cal needs to ditch the zone when facing the better teams (guessing he's doing it knowing he's cutting rotation down when tougher opponents come and he's got foul trouble) as FIBA game is so much drive/draw/kick and his kids turn their heads and get lost.
This team goes on their runs with his run/jump, trap all over the court. Forces them to run which is the toughest thing about coaching kids today--they all say they want to run up and down the court and you have to scream at them to run....they want to run if they have a chance in open court, otherwise most just want to jog/cruise up and down. It takes conditioning and practice to maintain pace and it's why I'd love playing for a guy like Cal as you get a lot of freedom and minutes as long as you play hard all of the time. Most elite programs operate that way, and you should play that way with talent. It's fascinating seeing how Payton Pritchard who plays in an uptempo system at Oregon has had to be screamed at to keep the pace up and push the ball--but think he is used to dribbling it up--where Cal prefers the pass ahead/hit ahead for quicker attack.
