ESPN personalities are killing Tony Bennett today. Stephen A Smith called for his job. Seth Greenberg said it was embarrassing for the ACC. JJ Reddick mockingly says “What a start to March Madness”

Them and the ACC deserve to be called out but I don't think his job is in any jeopardy since he recently won their first championship, something they couldn't get done with Ralph Sampson for 3 All-American seasons. But he is anything but consistent; remember they're the first(and only?) #1 seed to lose in the 1st round since the field moved to 64+.

They had more shooters their title year to go with some legit NBA talent. Also got EXTREMELY lucky during their title run (miracle finish against both Purdue and Auburn).

Also got lucky against Tech late when a defender decided to contest a UVA player going for a layup and that player kicked out for a three to tie when the defender could have just let the player make the 2 pointer and Tech could've inbounded with 1 point lead and kept ahead via free throws.

But UVA isn't going to fire Bennett. He got them a title and is posting 20+ win seasons, which is far better than they were doing before he got there. However, I don't know how you sell your program to recruits after that god awful performance last night (which they have replicated several times this season!).

Purdue also lost as a 1 seed

Good. Committee should be embarrassed. Both teams sos was like 70, while st John's was 30. And a few other more deserving teams.

Virginia's last 10 scoring outputs:

63 v. Pitt - Loss
49 v. Wake Forest - Win
41 v. Va. Tech - 34-point loss
44 v. UNC - 10-point loss
72 v. Bos. College - Win
48 v. Duke - 25-point loss
72 v. Ga. Tech - Win
66 v. Bos. College - Win
65 v. NC State - Loss
42 v. Colorado State - 25-point loss

They scored 49 points or less in 5 of their last 10 games. They scored 49 or less 7 times this year. They scored over 70 points only 11 times, compared to 59 or less 13 times, 69 or less 23 times.

By comparison, St. John's scored 69 or less only 6 times. Seton Hall only 12 times. Indiana State, only 2 times.

He seems to be applying the Mark Stoops approach to basketball. It's not a good strategy in football and completely asinine in basketball. Every team should push the ball down court to try to get easy baskets; when
they aren't there no law says you can't then pull back and set up your half court offense, though it seems Virginia might not have one of those.

Virginia fans are largely still in support of him from what I've seen.

How in the world did they win a title?? And a recent title at that!!! I tried to watch some of the game but the NIT games were more entertaining.
They had talented guards (Guy/Jerome) and an NBA forward in Hunter.....but they also had every break go their way. Remember they were down big in the 1st Round game in '19 too--but had enough firepower and shooting to overcome their inept, jackass head coach.

Purdue fouled up 3 and UVA made first/intentionally missed 2nd FT the miracle play with back tap going to backcourt and Clark got the ball to Diakate and he hit game tying jumper and won in OT.

Ty Jerome gets away with a double dribble in the backcourt of Final Four Semifinal and then Auburn fouls Guy on 3pt attempt and they beat Auburn.

Down 3 again late against Texas Tech and for whatever reason a ball side help defender sprints to help challenge a UVA player driving and he kicks out to the open shooter (Hunter) and he nails a 3pt shot to send game to OT. They win again.

It took all those breaks for Bennett's approach/coaching to be overcome. Since then-they've returned to be pure suckage.

De'Andre Hunter was a man and that Guy (Travis maybe) was the ultimate college guard that got on a heater making shots in March.

The fact that Virginia and Michigan st got in and Seton hall Indiana st and St. John’s were left out really makes me question how corrupt the selection committee really is. Football conferences rule everything even in basketball apparently

Did some of you wake up from a Rip Van Winkle nap? ACC Bias? No one, ESPN included, has said anything positive about ACC basketball going on 4 years or more.

Bennet was a good coach. You don't have multiple 30 win seasons and a national championship because of luck

But the game changed dramatically, very quickly. Players practice much smarter and longer than players before. They are automatic at the 3 point line and quite capable 5 feet beyond that.

And had ref help. That was a controversial call to win the Auburn game. Man. That should’ve been us against them and we would’ve crushed them.

Um Duke and North Carolina were in the FF a couple years ago and it was a love fest like no other.

They literally won a title due to luck. That season they won their first round game on a tip in.

It’s wild that minus that lucky ass run they haven’t won a SINGLE tourney game since that first round loss to a 16 seed. That’s mind blowing.
