Vikings fire Zimmer and GM

Why do so many Ohio State quarterbacks put up insane numbers in college but never pan out in the league?

IMO it has a little to do with the conference. OSU has so much more talent than any other B10 team, that most of the time they don't have to throw into a narrow window. OSU QBs have elite OL blocking for them, elite WRs who are often the fastest players on the field so they don't get a ton of pressure put on them and they don't have to throw into tight windows. So most times they only have to look at their first option and throw it to that person. Very few OSU QBs were able to get through all their progressions once they got into the NFL, it just seems the game moves too fast for them. Whereas when they were at OSU they had a pretty clean pocket every play and usually their #1 target was open due to superior speed and talent at WR.

What specific things are you speaking of regarding bad dealings of Harbaugh with women? I have not heard of any.

A close friend worked for the Bears. Got some of my friends jobs at the stadium. One of his female friends was harassed on numerous occasions and after refusing advances a number of times. He saw it first hand.

@THE_OAK

Was in Chicago all day today and heard lots of sports talk radio here.

The buzz here surrounding the Bears is that Jim Caldwell is going to be their guy.

Reasons: He turned down the opportunity to interview with the Vikings and one other team (I can't remember) and belief is he did because he has a job already secured and belief is either the Bears job or Jacksonville job.

Add to it that former Caldwell boss and now Bears "consultant" Bill Polian is basically hiring the next Bears coach (he hired Caldwell 13 years ago in Indy) and there you go. It's the pieces people in Chicago are putting together. We will see!

Caldwell is now 67 years old though. Media in Chicago says he'd be the "safe hire" which is likely true.

If this does happen, the irony is Caldwell is an Iowa Hawkeye grad and of course once the HC for the Lions (they never should have fired him). It has to be in the cards :)

It will be interesting to see how it plays out now that the Bears have hired Ryan Poles as the GM from Kansas City. From what I have been hearing and reading Poles will have complete control over the hire. I'm actually optimistic about the hire, I think the Bears got the next big up and comer of the GM candidates that were being floated around. I actually thought he would have gone to a better situation than ours.

I don't know how I would feel about hiring Caldwell as our coach. He's been a really good QB coach and a pretty good OC, just not sure if he's completely cut out to be the head man. What I like is that Poles has ties with Flores, so we might be able to land him, which would be a much better hire IMO than Caldwell.

If Poles is being given the complete control of the coach hire and Polian is being pushed to the side, then I'd say Caldwell is much less of a possibility as the HC hire. Caldwell is a Polian guy.

I really think Jim Caldwell is a good coach, but the biggest concern I'd have about him is his age. Just hard imagining hiring a HC pushing 70 years old.

I agree I think Caldwell is just a little too old and I believe he is a better OC/QB than HC.

From everything I have gathered Poles major stipulation for accepting the GM position was that he had total control. I'll be interested in seeing who he brings in for interviews, but he does have ties with Brain Flores, so that might be something to look into. From all that I have read, he will be interviewing Quinn current Cowboys DC and former ATL HC, and Eberflus Colts DC tomorrow. I'm not sure if he will add any new candidates to the list.

Can't go wrong with Williams, Stingley Jr., or Hutchinson. I could also see Thibodeaux from Oregon as well. I could also see the Lions taking Pickett out of Pitt and letting him sit behind Goff for a year. It will be interesting to see how it shakes out. I have to wait till pick 39 to see how the Bears screw up on picking.

Whoever they pick the Falcons will say "hold my beer" and waste about the 50th 1st round pick in their 57 year history, maybe 58 years. Which is hard to believe I remember their first exhibition game.

The Falcons have some good first rounders, Vick, DeAngelo Hall, Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, and Kyle Pitts just off the top of my head. In the last 20 years, the Bears have only had maybe two good first round picks (and that's if we even have a first round pick, which we don't again this year) and they were Greg Olsen and Kyle Long. Every other player has been a bust, the jury is still out on Roquan Smith.

Agree, a Falcons fan shouldn't be bitching about their 1st round picks when looking at what the Bears have done or Lions-- especially during the Matt Millen wasted years.

Bears got their guy @THE_OAK :

Tells me that coming from the Colts organization Polian likely did have lots of influence here-- especially knowing they only announced the new GM a couple days ago.

I'm sure Polian had a lot of say in the hiring, I just hope Poles is good with it. He's the one that has to answer for this hire. All I read and heard after Poles was hired was that it was his show going forward, but that doesn't look to be the case. So same old Chicago. I'm actually okay with hiring Eberflus as HC. He had some solid defenses at Indy. I just hope he hires a lights-out OC because the Bears offense has sucked...well for all my life.

I wanted either Flores or Daboll as the HC, but I figured Flores would want to go to a better situation than Chicago so I never really thought it would be a possibility. I really thought the best hire outside of Flores, would be Daboll. He's done wonders with Josh Allen in Buffalo, if anyone could have made something out of Fields I thought it would be Daboll. Maybe they just roll the dice next season on Fields and see if he progresses and if he doesn't draft another QB.

I'm expecting next season to be another 5-6 win season and then we get our full allotment of draft picks back and make some good picks. I don't know how aggressive we will be in free agency. It will be an interesting offseason, but I'm expecting a lot of losses in the near future.

In listening to more this afternoon on Chicago talk radio, sounds like Poles definitely made the final decision but basically had to choose from Polian's list of the final three (Poles did get to personally interview them too though).

Former Bears defensive players already making strong vocal pitch for Rod Marinelli as the DC. The guy does know football but he's going to be 73 years old by the start of next season. Marinelli is considered one of Eberflus' mentors and I listened to him in an interview this afternoon talking about the hire.

This one is hard to figure. Just doesn't seem to be a fit but we'll see.

Harbaugh's name getting out there tells me maybe it's Harbaugh who is the one who really wants to make a move. But if he's going to, for the sake of Michigan, it needs to get done soon. Spring practice starting at Michigan can't be more than 4-6 weeks away can it?

I haven't followed the Vikings search too deep other than they've not got a new guy yet. Different names have been floated out there and of course they're also currently functioning without a GM yet...am I right?

They did hire a GM the other day. Around the same time as the Bears.

Yeah just saw that in looking a few minutes ago. Apparently he was in San Francisco for a short period while Harbaugh coached there. There's the connection.
