Once again the refs making the game about themselves and not the contest on the court. You can't have rabbit ears as a ref/ump, grow a pair. And, what's up with Ayers lip quivering/mouth thing hes doing? Must've triggered him bad whatever was said.

Yes, they do. MLB Umps can do the same thing in baseball. Refs usually have ultimate control on the field of play for reasonable incidents.

No joke. If he tossed me, I would've then gotten my money's worth at that point. Wouldn't have threatened him or go on the court or anything, but man, he'd have heard me call him everything but his government name.
Depends. If it’s a fight, yes. Just like in any other sport. But refs generally have control over the people attending. I’ve seen refs throw out people at high school football games. Granted, most don’t unless someone is being a complete ass, but it happens.
It's honestly a college basketball thing. No other sport seems to have the officiating theatrics like this sport does.

Mostly NBA and CBB. And it’s mainly due to crowd size and proximity to area of play.
MLB has a good distance from field so it doesn’t happen often. NFL crowds are too big. So refs will just flag unless things get really out of control. And then you have LEOs for that.
Not really. In soccer , referees can stop the game if the fans proliferate vulgarities, racism or other obscenities. If the fans continue with the bad language the game can be forfeit all together. So no, this is not a college basketball thing.
As a coach and ref and also as a fan, I understand Roger Ayers position. He is not cursing the coaches, players or fans. He treats them with respect. In a normal society if someone treats with you respect , we should return the favor.
Even if he missed a call.. not a reason for vulgarity or treats.
Unfortunately, majority of fans have a hostility towards referees. After, I have started refereeing , I realized it is not easy and not everyone can do it.
I never tossed out a fan, however I have heard some plenty of stupid comments from people that have no idea about rules. There is a huge difference between playing basketball and knowing the rules. There is a huge difference between coaching and knowing the rules. And definitely, there is a huge difference between watching basketball as a fan and thinking you know the rules and actually knowing the rules.
There is also a difference between knowing the rules and applying them in different contexts. Despite, the popular belief on this forum, Roger Ayers is one of the best referees in college basketball.

His daughter went to UVA , so you cannot accuse him of hating UVA. My issue is why Roger Ayers has bee delegated to UVA games where there is a conflict of interest situation.
I saw it happen a couple of weeks ago at a basketball game. The guy was yelling at the ref and telling them they were awful and had been the whole game. The ref blew the whistle and threw him out of the game. The guy just gets up and quietly walks out of the gym like he was going to the concession stand or something. 🤣

Last 10 years officials have become too much about themselves. Call the game ignore the fans. In high school games you can’t breathe loudly. If you aren’t tough enough to handle the criticism don’t officiate. Too many college officials have Vegas connections.

I used to go to a lot of college games where I lived when I was outside Kentucky. There was a man that sat down low that constantly screamed at the referees no matter the call. They would constantly show him on television. One night I got the luck of sitting right beside him. He was constantly screaming no matter whether the call was good or bad. Anyway, I got a lot of TV time that night. Horrible experience. By the last 10 minutes of the game, his voice was gone. He was pretty drunk.

Well said. The decline in sportsmanship and respect in sports is a direct reflection of our society. You can no longer just disagree with someone but now they become an enemy and villain. Our country will continue to see a decline in people willing to be refs/umps especially at the school levels because of the fans.
I could care less what the fans say UNLESS they are threatening a member of my crew or one of the players. Then you go to game management (athletic director usually) and ask that they handle the fans removal. If they're just bitching about calls, hey they paid their $$.

When I was a kid in the early 1970s, every time they called a foul on you, you had to raise your hand to the scorer's table. It was a technical foul if you didn't. Now it is rarely seen.

He's one of those that is not near as competent as he acts. Most refs get elevated not on their ability to make decisions and manage games but on the confidence and attitude they express. Show and Valentine are other examples.
I read an article on him last year. Apparently, he was a firefighter, but was afraid to fight fire. The article tried to make it sound like a courageous decision to quit, but reading between the lines, his cowardice was obvious.

That's because officials mostly do that now to reduce confusion. This isn't the 70s anymore; game has changed.
Doesn't give the ref the right to be an incompetent egomaniacal prick either. Yet we see FAR too many of those in certain sports.
Tbf, at least he realized it wasn't for him and got out. Too many people stick around in fields where people's lives are at stake and they aren't fit for the field. So, I'll give kudos for that. And I'll even give him some props for trying. Most people have no interest in that kind of sacrifice anymore.
Yep, you'd better get that hand up and facing the scorer's table. In addition, I've seen a metric shit ton of fans tossed out of high school games across Southwest Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, and East Tennessee over the years.
I am from that region incidentally - Bell Co / Claiborne Co area (which is also Lee Co VA "region")
