USA soccer

Sooo, I want some input. I just got through watching the U20 team play very well in the CONCCAACAACAACAAAFFFF tournament.......and I was very impressed. How well do you anticipate this talent translating to the 2026 or 2030 WC? Were the optics misleading? How much optimism should I have?

^ I really don't know how you can tell given CON is a 3rd rate region overall after at least Euro & S.A. by a mile & maybe even Africa. Need interregional tourney results to tell imo.

I think you should be encouraged. There was a lot of technical skill on display. I’ve watched a few of these u-20 tournaments and this team stood out compared to some other US squads. They were doing things in the final third that our teams historically haven’t been able to do. And I fully expect the Aaronson kid to play in Europe soon.

Think MLS revenues will ever get strong enough to increase salaries past current English Championship/ Liga MX levels? I know they can never reach the stratosphere of top Euro FB with a salary cap in place.

Good question. Looks like salaries on the English Championship are pretty high; higher than I expected for sure, and in some cases approaching Premier League levels. There's a pretty big drop-off from the Championship to League One, though.

https://www.888sport.com/blog/footb...ll players are getting,around £2,200 per week.

Liga MX salaries are fairly high too, but MLS is getting closer to those pay levels, and in a few cases a bit higher, I think. Pretty big difference between the big clubs and the lower tier ones.

Current MLS salary info here:

The MLS salary cap is kind of squishy. I think currently you're allowed to have up to three "designated players" who aren't subject to the cap.

I am late to the game but watched and recorded the semis and Finals and those were my impressions. A very proactive attack and scored in an abundance of ways. The one/two quick combos to a third runner at the top of the box were something I really haven't seen from an American Youth Team--and my best comparison was the 2019 U20 World Cup group that stunned France in the Round of 16. That group led by Chris Richards, Weah, Dest and Paxton Pomykal produced goals almost exclusively on the counterattack.

I was struck most by the wide variety of playing styles, especially from the Philly Union kids. A center back taking all of the set pieces in Brandon Craig, an 8 in Jack McGlynn who looks like Magic Johnson compared to everybody else as a lethal and creative passer--and with shots from distance. Paxton Aaronson as a 10 was attack, attack, attack with an attacking skill set better than his older brother without maybe his brother's sheer energy and range. Throughout the tourney this edition was miserable to play against with their counter pressing.

New topic...but for anyone who follows the USMNT with even passing interest and you have an ESPN+ account, dig up last night's episode of Futbol Americas with Berhalter in studio taking direct questions from Hercules Gomez for a solid 45 minutes. No questions dodged, no questions left unanswered. Straight up answered the Jon A Brooks question that I'm frankly getting sick of...this USMNT's first and foremost strength is it's 90+ minutes of pressing and counterpressing, and you have to play a high line to maximize that ability. He said it without saying it, but Brooks' doesn't have the direct speed to close ground quickly in front of him, nor the recovery speed to chase down people behind him.

At some point I'd like Brooks' fan boys to answer the question when has he actually stepped up and performed well since 2018 for the US. He was dog crap against Honduras and that's pretty much the last of us seeing him.

Hmm, I don't have ESPN+, but I'll have to look around for that Gomez-Berhalter interview. That sounds very interesting!

The transfer window is like the MLB trade deadline on steroids....No love for Pulisic, could be dealt.
It would be interesting to see if he could hold up physically, playing everyday for a lesser team like Newcastle. My money says no.

To say rumors and innuendo is passed for legit stories in the many media sources in the UK would be an understatement. I take any Pulisic goes somewhere rumor and stash it in a closet; it gets American eyes on their websites. I'd LOVE to see Pulisic end up someplace and shove goals and assists straight down Tuechel's throat, but truth be told this is the Tuechel pattern. He was chased out of PSG because of runins with their technical director over who they were bringing in and it will be the same thing in the next year and a half at Chelsea

I 100% think Pulisic was destined for Liverpool but - like with Werner and Havertz - Chelsea got wind of it and nabbed him first. You see how well that went for Werner. Had he stayed healthy - a big assumption, I know - I think Pulisic would have starred at Liverpool.

Said same thing on All-Star game last night: MX still a bit higher. But, MLS is now 28 teams with more coming and MX is stuck on 18. Won't be long to MLS higher. I think maybe 5 MLS all-stars were Mexican. But both way off Europe. I don't mind though. B/c of salary cap, typical MLS game way more competitive than Europe games.

Werner is sort of remarkable to me; at Leipzig he was fairly lethal and one of the fastest strikers in the World. At Chelsea he could have had a follies reel that would make Gyasi Zardes go into hiding. I still think Havertz will be a star he just is malfit for Tuechel's scheme, whatever that is.

And US under 20 women's team eliminated from U-20 World Cup in group stage. Smart coach had 6 starting lineup changes in game 2 after defeating Ghana, and ended up losing that game to The Netherlands. Needed to beat defending WC champs Japan in game 3. and it didn't happen.

All that work and then a coach pulls some idiot move like that.

Yeah, it was a bad move. He was overconfident in the depth of the team. Might not be the coach for much longer.

What happened to this thread? WC is about to start and berhalter announced his pathetic picks for the roster. Roldán? Cmon man. Jordan Morris and no Pepi?? Big time smack in the face to steffen.

I'm telling ya. UK Men's Soccer won regular season 2022 Sun Belt championship. Defeated South Carolina and West Virginia (tonight 3-0) in Sun Belt conference tournament. Playing for Sun Belt tourney championship next.

Oh, and still undefeated on the season.

Yeah we have legit shot at a natty but it’s not gonna be easy.

Pepi may be hurt. Never been a fan of Morris on international stage.
Think this may be a 3 and out for us.

That's my gut feeling too, unfortunately. Berhalter is just too tactically rigid. Pleasantly surprised to see Steffen left off the roster, probably means Turner is GK #1. Some of the other roster selections were a bit puzzling. Morris and Roldan aren't difference makers at the WC level, and Yedlin is a past his prime clown show now. Nonetheless, I'll be rooting them on.

I think it goes beyond tactics. This group may be individually talented, but repeating my previous posts, their lack of awareness on the ball, dribbling into traffic, is not tactical, but an innate issue with certain players. Some are just not winners either. This may be a cycle too early for most of these players.

I didn't see any of the roster announcement coverage live, but was pretty stunned that it was a Haji Wright OR Pefok and a Pepi OR Ferreira according to Berhalter. To say I didn't have even the slightest idea Berhalter was thinking would be an understatement because he really has been a little bit of a system slave or appeared to be. WCQ was built around what his 9 could offer in buildup as complimented by the 9's ability to press and counterpress which he may the point very publicly on the ESPN FC appearance with Herc Gomez the one very visible strength through qualifying was the belief we were miserable to play against because of how McKennie, Musah, Adams and Aaronson at points run around in front of a high line wrecking midfield buildup. It's why Arriola got so much run when Weah wasn't on. Not in either Wright or Pefok's wheelhouse at all compared to Ferreira, Sargeant and Pepi. It suggests to me that Wright sees the field only as a second 9 subbed on in need of a late goal, but even then that is more Pefok's strength because Wright isn't known for his aerial ability whereas Pefok is a classic danger aerially on set pieces.

I think leaving off Pepi is a big mistake, but I rarely question coaches in any sport on stuff like this; Berhalter sees or feels something that led him away from Pepi but it is still shocking to me because he was more a part of WCQ than any of the previous names. It suggests also that Sargeant is at the top of the chart. Pepi is so young compared to the pool but I would have brought him; I also don't like the optics of leaving a Mexican-American who was such a big part of qualifying home...like it or not, we are ALWAYS going to be in recruiting battles for Mexican-American youth and given we are essentially cohosting in 2026 we have equal parts to offer that Alvarado, that Luna, that Obed Vargas or JoGo.

...and that is just one position. Steffen being left off probably shouldn't be a shock...he's been in bizarre form going prior to his gaffe in the FA Cup that got him practically dumped by Man City anyway and hasn't exactly lit up the Championship. Tillman left off...surprises me. Shaq Moore being put on with Morris and Roldan gives the "MLS roster Quota" guy alot of fodder because if Moore and Roldan in particular get much run somebody or many are either hurt or we go into Game Three without a snowball's chance in Hell of making it out of group and they get on the field as consolation. Alot of derision gets thrown on Long and it's fair...but if Myles Robinson and Chris Richards were healthy Long's not on the plane. I was pleasantly surprised at Ream being put on; pared with his Club mate Robinson and naturally leftfooted and captaining a midtable Premier League squad so he will be very familiar with England at minimum.

I 'm sure I won't feel this way when the WC gets started, but I almost hope for a 3 and out so that Berhalter gets canned.
Just don't believe in him unfortunately.

Wright has been scoring for his club pepi wasnt. That is berhalters rationale. In berhalters mind that’s all he’s looking for. He doesn’t use his “9” a term I hate bc it’s too ambiguous but he’s looking for goal scoring production rather than a guy who can hold the ball long enough for midfielders and defenders to join the attack. Its what I refer to as a target player. Screw this 9 shit and trying to conform to something you don’t have. Berhalter is like that though he doesn’t define roles for his players.

We have a team full of midfielders. This is real simple. Play pulisic at the target, Reyna and weah wide. The weak side sticker/winger whatever needs to connect up with pulisic when we send balls wide. Musah mckennie adams in the midfield. Berhalters biggest problem is he over thinks everything and tries to pound square pegs in round holes. I don’t even think this team is geared to a 4-3-3. It’s a midfield heavy team like I said. Should play a simple 4-4-2. When we play a quality side that puts pressure berhalters 4-3-3 is going to become a 4-2-3-1. Too much width no balance. Someone needs to teach berhalter how to coach because he obviously has no clue. He has the players. I get this team to the QF at least if I had the reins.

Does the sec not have a mens soccer league?
No, not for men. Only other SEC team besides UK offering men's soccer is South Carolina. UK men's soccer played in MAC until 2005. Joined Conference USA the next season and established a rivalry with Gamecocks. Both UK and SC left CUSA last season and joined Sun Belt Conference for 2022. West Virginia also plays men's soccer in Sun Belt and they are Big XII in all other sports.

Louisville City plays San Antonio in USL Championship @ 830 est on ESPN2 for those interested.

On USMNT, think leaving group stage is our ceiling. Backline is sus. Forwards are too raw. Adam’s and McKinney need to play out of their minds in the middle
