UNC fans are genuinely concerned about making the tournament this year. Does UCLA hand them their 6th loss tonight?

I work with a few die hard UNC fans and have recently talked to them about the state of their program. They are deeply concerned about Hubert Davis' ability to take UNC to the tournament this year. I asked two of them, "Do you think you guys can beat Duke this year?" One of them responded, "We're not even thinking about that. We're worried if we can even make the tournament. Davis is done after this year."

UNC takes on UCLA this afternoon in New York, and the 10-1 Bruins could turn a 6-5 UNC team into a 6-6 team by the time the day is over.

Looking at UNC's schedule, there are very few opportunities for quality wins. Obviously they get UCLA, and then top 15 NET Pitt (twice), Duke (twice), and head on the road against Clemson. What if they lose 4 or 5 of those? They'll obviously drop some additional games in addition to those games. I could see a minimum of 10 losses before the ACC tourney begins, and potentially 12-13 losses.

Does a 21-13 with zero quality wins get an NCAA birth, because that's roughly where I think UNC will finish the season.

21-13 and your name is North Carolina makes the NCAA tournament.
I'm not so sure if that will be the case this year, especially now with the way the NET factors in. UNC could potentially have zero quality wins. If they drop a few games to teams like Florida State, their chances become even more dire.

UK didn't make it in 2013, and the Cats actually boasted a few quality wins that year.

I could see UNC getting shut out in favor of a 9th or even 10th SEC team.

UNC might miss the tournament?

UNC is gonna struggle. Their "best" player is a mediocre bricklaying chucker. RJ Davis takes 16 shots per game and 8 of those are 3s and he gets a mediocre 18.6 points from them. Dude is highly inefficient. Their big guys are bums. Don't be surprised if they are a .500 team all season. If Seth Trimble is your 2nd best player you have major major issues

As a Wildcat fan, I’m cheering for UNC to win today. The last thing we should want is UNC speed running their demise. They would be quicker to move on from Hubert Davis before long and we don’t want that. I want them tap dancing in mediocrity for as long as they can. Hoping they beat UCLA and end up making the tournament as a 6-9 seed and bow out in the first or second round. Much harder to fire a coach with close ties to the University if they are still in the big dance

I like your line of thinking. Hubert becomes Tubby for them, with at least a half-decade of so-so basketball, 6 to 8 seeds, and early tournament flameouts.

Living amongst them in Raleigh and with several family alum, they aren’t in a great place this holiday season. Weirdly small UNC team all around. Teams like that can work (see Villanova title teams with Omari Spellman type surrounded by guards) but they don’t have that caliber of college big man nor the pure talent in the backcourt to overcome. Deep backcourt for sure but besides Jackson, not next level.

And Hubert is the coach. It’s just off this year.

Don’t hate it!

Curious if the UNC fans think the big football hire investment and diversion of the bulk of athletics money is going to really hurt their bball program?

Wouldn’t surprise me. He blew that game to KU with mostly Roy’s roster IIRC. Will be similar to the Kevin Ollie story sans the actual ‘chip.

So who do your friends think will replace him Stackhouse or the coach at Cincinnati? They have to continue the Dean E Smith Fraud.

They played a tough ooc schedule, but lost to nearly every good team so far. ACC is bad and they’ll probably win enough to get in the NCAAT. Either way, I don’t see them moving on from Davis but I’d imagine the honeymoon phase is very much over.

Really wish we were playing them today.

They should have gotten the death penalty. Thanks to the NCAA letting them skate, we have NIL
that is killing college sports
This is something that is always overlooked. Once the NCAA said that it was OK for UNC to not provide a real education for athletes, the whole "value of a free college education" went out the window and opened the door for the mass chaos we have today.

It’s not hurting me to watch! Although Hubert did have a season similar to this and he made a run in the tourney. This current team just can’t guard. If they ever get consistent on defense then they could be pretty good because they score like always.

I think Davis is good but you are correct in that it hasn’t been as great this year. When he gets hot he is tough though. I don’t think he’s in the Caleb love bad style of chucker.

Maybe they can sneak a win over Duke on their home floor because we all know that would carry them in the resume department all year.

While i'm glad that would mean we'd be a #1 seed, and that a rival had a less than stellar year. However, no way I'd want a rival to have the chance of 1 vs 16 upset.... I'm still unhappy about who we exited to in 16 and 17 and those weren't even upsets....
I don’t think it’s possible for a school like them to get a 16, they would probably be in the 12 seed play in game.
