saw on the Tar Heel athletics site, that UNC recently scrimmaged Navy in nearby Cary NC. Why does UK not do this with some local schools ie. EKU, NKU, UC, Morehead ??

It wasn't the Naval Academy's team. It was an intra-squad scrimmage, and one of the sides was wearing navy-colored jerseys.

The way the NCAA rules are currently written, any scrimmage between two teams outside of the regular 56-game schedule counts as a game; but is not included in the official won-loss record. This rule is under review, and I wouldn't be surprised if some leeway is given soon to allow a handful of inter-school exhibition games that don't count against the 56-game limit. Most of these would be played during the Fall practice season, if enacted.

This is interesting. There is a rule that certain teams can scrimmage one another as long as there is no advertisement and there is no broadcast of it. I think some football teams do this from time to time. Similarly, basketball teams are allowed to have exhibition type games, even televised, once every four years. Not sure if there is some rule that allow that for baseball, but I would think that it would be a pretty good thing, especially if they could do this in the fall sometime.

The current rule for baseball is unique to the sport. If you play another team at any time, it counts against the 56-game limit of games per season. However, if it's played at some time other than during the official season, its result doesn't count in your won-loss record.

Some schools play this type of game during the Fall, despite the fact that it diminishes the number of regular season games they can play. For example, last Fall, UNC played a game against High Point University. If you count the games on this year's UNC regular season schedule, you'll see that it totals only 55.

At the annual convention of the American Baseball Coaches' Association last month, the majority of the coaches voted to allow a small number of games outside of the regular season that would not count against the regular season total. The NCAA Rules Committee will take that vote under advisement and decide if the rule should be changed.
