To me, the foul against Goodfellow occurred after he had punted - change of possession. Whether penalty was right call or not, how does UK keep the ball? Seems at worst MO should have gotten the ball where UK did. Anyone?

Bc that isn’t the rule. It isn’t like a flag after an interception.

all roughing the kickers occur after the kick is gone. It’s an auto first down. If they got a piece of the ball then roughing the kicker is off the table. And if he holds it then he isn’t a kicker. So you can’t rough the kicker unless he gets the kick off and hasn’t landed and completed the kicking motion yet

He was apparently still in the tackle box which makes him still a protected kicker and therefore still must given all the insurances of following through with his kick. There was no attempted to block the kick which makes it a penalty. Least that’s how it sounded by the SEC rules guy. As long as he is in the tackle box then he cannot be tackled as if he is a ball carrier.

The whole purpose of the call is once the punter starts his kicking action you can’t hit him without getting the ball. Why because a leg trying to kick something as someone dives their body towards it leads to a lot of broken legs

It doesn’t matter how far back the punter punts from. It literally could not have been closer to a block, so the foul occurred right as the punt occurred. Textbook roughing the punter no matter how far back vertically it was.

He's still a kicker in the tackle box and you cannot tackle the kicker. Had Goodfellow attempted to advance the ball as a runner, then he could've been tackled. But he kicked it and was a defenseless kicker. Hence the penalty and automatic 1st down for Kentucky.

And a huge game-saving play. Very heady and gutsy by Goodfellow.

Have you seen many roughing the kicker penalties?

Probably the play of the year.
I can't think of a more impactful heads up play than that. He had the instinct to chase it down and in one motion collect the ball and kick it. Even if he isn't tackled he still got 20-30 yards out of it which would have given the D a chance. Woulda needed a miracle to keep them out of the end zone from the 2. So sad he got hurt but that guy is now a legend.

If the snap hits the ground on the way to the punter, I always thought the punter was instantly considered "fair game". Is that correct?

What about an aussie style punter that runs out of the tackle box before kicking? Could he be "roughed"?

IDK.

Have you never seen a roughing the punter ?

It used to be called in the NFL a lot. That or "running into the kicker" which is a lesser penalty. I think it is much more lax than it used to be. What that guy did was the definition of roughing the kicker. Unfortunate for him as it was the natural play to make for sure.

Glad Goodfellow did what he did. I was thinking/hoping at first for him to kick it through endzone.
