Kentucky Baseball Fall World Series Begins Friday

Weekend series to cap fall practice runs Friday-Sunday at Cliff Hagan Stadium

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky baseball team will hold its Fall World Series this weekend at Cliff Hagan Stadium as it wraps up its fall practice schedule. The three-game series will take place Friday throughSunday at Cliff Hagan Stadium and is free and open to the public.

First pitch for Friday is scheduled for 3:15 p.m., with both Saturday and Sunday set for an 11:30 a.m. start. The roster has been split into the Blue Team and Black Team after an internal draft was held this week.

UK returns three of its top starting pitchers in right-handers Sean Hjelle and Justin Lewis, and lefty Zack Thompson. Hjelle was the SEC Pitcher of the Year and Thompson a freshman All-American, while Lewis returned to school after being selected in the 11th round of the MLB Draft. The Cats will need to replace the production of five lineup mainstays from 2017 but do return All-America outfielder Tristan Pompey and Second-Team All-SEC catcher Troy Squires.

During fall camp the Wildcats have focused on leadership to continue pushing the program toward sustained elite level, fueled by a deep pitching staff and experienced catchers.

The Cats will open its 2018 season on the road with four games in three days beginning Feb. 16 as part of a challenging schedule that features 25 games against 11 opponents who made last season’s NCAA Tournament field, including defending national champion Florida. Two of the Wildcats’ 2018 opponents made the College World Series, three others advanced to the Super Regionals and five hosted a regional, once again setting up what should be one of the nation’s most difficult schedules.

Wow...too bad we are leaving for msu sat at 4am or I would be checking this out.

I still really believe that the athletic department should team up with Keeneland and they should promote a baseball, football, and Keeneland weekend. Maybe something where you get a ticket to Keeneland on Friday, a football ticket, and then a ticket to the fall baseball world series (more like an invitation). Promote the three sports and try to get more people out to the fall baseball series, at least for one day. Plus they could try to do the baseball games at times conducive for fans to attend Keeneland, the football game, and the baseball games all weekend.

Great idea cb3, but probably difficult from a time standpoint with the atmosphere surrounding Keeneland and with tailgating for fb

That's true wouldn't be easy but you could make the baseball game on Friday a 7 o'clock start. Have your baseball game on Saturday be an early start maybe at noon and do what you could to get your football game as a 730 start and then Sunday you could do another noon game or mid afternoon game for baseball. Now you're probably still going to have people choosing the ponies over baseball but you might be able to run some sort promotion to basically help promote the baseball team. Maybe on Sunday you do one of the sports merchandise auctions or maybe give away something at the baseball game to bring a bigger crowd.

Pitching was really strong, as expected, on Friday. Hjelle looked like he was in total command out there, a very relaxed domination. Thompson was a little inconsistent but still allowed only two runs in his four-plus innings. He settled in after giving up a pair in the first and did pretty well. I was told he was touching 97 on the gun. :fire:
