Some of you have much better memories than me - I can't seem to recall the years when Kentucky high school football was filled with abundant 5* and 4* talent that could not wait to get an offer to play football for UK; or when UK consistently won 10+ games with an occasional down year where they only won 7-8 games, and demanded the coach be fired for only winning 6-7 games after having to replace key coaches, rebuild a new OL (with a new coach), and then have critical injuries on the O & D, and a star player suspended a third of the season. To receive that kind of contract increase, it's very evident CMS was on the verge of accepting an offer to a big time school that would pay that kind of money, with a far more lucrative recruiting base and opportunity to win it all. While this has been a disappointing season for many reasons, this is the down year. If the fan base does not sink the ship, and assuming we don't experience similar injuries next year, things should be much better. The calls to replace CMS with Liam Coen are insane; he has zero head coaching experience, and only one year as a semi-successful o-coordinator (remember UTC?). And where would his recruiting base come from? Cali, or maybe Connecticut? You think the "Big Dog" and BWhite would not go with CMS? While I'm not crazy about paying coaches that kind of money, that is what it will take to remain competitive in college athletics. I think the AD & admin demonstrated a lot of foresight in retaining the most successful head FB coach in the school's history. Without doing so, there's a very good chance UK returns to the consistent 2-4 win seasons, with an occasional 6-7 win season and chance for a bowl game. I, for one, don't miss those years.
