I think the situation is that UK has told him he has a firm offer and they would love to have him IF he takes care of his academics. Sounds fair to me, it is all academic if he doesn't do that anyway. It really is up to him. I also think they let him know he would be welcome in a year or two if he has to take the delayed route AND follows through on it.
Forget UK for now, I hope the young man realizes how important taking care of business and sacrificing now is to HIS future.
