Tubby Smith negotiating deal to coach High Point

This may not be the most popular opinion, but since he’s there, we should:

1) bring his team in, retire his jersey

2) have a neutral court game in charlotte the following year

No neutral court one game in rupp. Tubby is a very good coach and a great person. He led us to a championship that consisted of a bigtime comeback against duke in the regional finals. No matter where the players came from, to come in and implement a new system and win is one of the great coaching jobs in a single season. We never missed a tournament with tubby and he deserves to be honored. He is the anti pitino

In the works to retire his jersey but Not while he is coaching to emotional and will be done
After he retires that from last Committee meeting at UK that rules those matters.
Tubby will be in Lexington week of April 13
To sign next release of Makers Mark Commerative bottles

When has UK ever given a low low low D-1 program a neutral court game outside of playing in a tournament? I don't see that at all. They average 1.200 fans at home, if I read the stats right.

I hear that 10 loss has his eye on the Lindsay job after he takes High Point for a ride and they run him off.

Tubby is second only to Rupp in National Championships at UK. Was never investigated by FBI or NCAA. Never failed to take his team to NCAA tourney, only UK coach to hold that record.

I believe you have hearing problems with the rumor
about Lindsay Wilson job, just does not sound reasonable. lol jmho

Haven't read this thread....but High Point (20 miles from my porch) is a small University with deep pockets that is booming with growth and development. Amazing re-built campus and facilities. It's much more than the typical lower D1 program and is perfect for Tubby to end his career.

But yes...as you suggested...a neutral court game is absurd. And why would UK EVER play a neutral game in Charlotte?

exactly what is the recruiting game?

Seriously? Everyone knows he doesn't do what others coaches do to network with AAU coaches and shoe companies to get top recruits. He scouts the dregs to look for diamonds in the rough, projects, etc. and it usually doesn't work out very well for him.

Sighhhhh...you play a neutral court game in charlotte for recruiting purposes. It’s not to benefit high point..it’s to get the Kentucky brand in Carolina. Cal is always looking to do these neutral court games like this. Geez folks

I am with you. Except NEVER in Charlotte. The only thing Cal has recruited or ever will recruit from this state is leftovers.

SKJ too. UNC passed on Wall and SKJ. Bam's story is a little more complicated.
Not arguing with you, but I live here.

Oh I get it. I live in Louisville, so I know what it’s like to be surrounded by goofs.

I just know Cal loves expanding his recruiting, so take advantage of it if you can. Plus, piss off UNC* Fans

Hey, I would support anything that would get under the skin of the UNC fans!! Is there a petition I can sign?

Could we go into North Carolina and draw a crowd? Absolutely

Could Duke/UNC* come into Kentucky and draw a crowd? No.

The difference in the fan bases

Tubby was hungry during his good run with UK, and the expectations wouldn't allow for him to suck.

I think Tubby went on coast mode and used coaching to enrich his family while not caring about his job status. Memphis fired him due to his inability to do what he said he would do with relationships inside of the city, he burned nearly all of the bridges.

He lies to get the job and then does whatever he wants. Even promoting his son over more qualified candidates.

There is a reason High Point is where he will land. Memphis was the last program to hire him without researching the reality of who is is and what he's going to do after the interview. No one wants him now, so he's gonna go retire at a small program.

It is what it is, and he can thank Pitino for leaving a national title team on the table and bolting for the NBA.

Mitch and Cal have GOT to schedule High Point for next season. Give Tubby a big welcome back to Rupp, honor him after the game. Make it happen!!!!

And in the end he made a pretty good living for himself and his family, so he did what he had to do......

There's a reason no one wants him. He will say all the right things to be hired, pump his record from when he was hungry, and then sit back and wait on a buyout. He planned the Memphis ordeal from the jump and they got suckered and knew it. Memphis didn't hire Tubby and pay him all of that cash to be mediocre and promote his children, while burning down the relationships which he said he wouldn't do in the city.

That's why he's gone.

Pastner has more success and didn't kill relationships that Memphis has always had. Memphis just figured out quickly what was happening.

Tubby maxed himself out for his family and AD's are morons. This was always Tubbys plan, he's been retired for years.
I didn't realize how much Tubby forced Memphis to hire him. Seems to me he was liked by most everyone. His years at Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota, Texas Tech, and Memphis along with several Coach of the year awards puts him in a very elite group of coaches known as the Hall of Fame.

In my opinion he did what he was hired to do at Memphis and that was to stabilize the program till they found a younger coach for the future like Hardaway.

I imagine Memphis had enough vacated games and NCAA investigations to last them for a while, thus the hiring of Tubby was a smart move.
Wish someone could come up with an answer why no one wants to hire Tubby.

I don't see anything wrong with trying to bury some bad feelings while everyone has a chance in regards to OTS.
National title. Tournament every year. No NCAA issues.
Not a recruiter by any means. Really good bench coach.
He ran his course at UK and likely could have had two more titles except for a Bogans ankle injury and a bizarre freeze up against UAB.
Likely stayed two years too long.
Honoring him for six, eight good years at UK doesn't cost Kentucky anything.
