Tubby Smith negotiating deal to coach High Point

I think Tubby's an above average coach. He's not a great coach.

But he's a quality guy, he'll win more than he loses and run a clean program. For most schools in the country, he'd be a good get.

The Memphis thing makes zero sense.

You fire Pastner who had had success. Tubby wasn't the young guy/next hot thing. So in hiring him, you're not looking to reinvent your program. You're looking for someone to steady the ship and run a good clean program.

Then you fire him after 2 years to hire Penny. Two years. You can't turn a program around in that time. Not Memphis.

It's his alma mater but it's crazy to go from Kentucky down to that. That's what happens when you don't play the recruiting game and fail to adapt your coaching methods.
He went 21-13 at Menphis, much better than Josh Pastner who plays the recruiting game and loses huge, yet he still ended up at Ga Tech where he's still losing huge.

Pastner went 19-15 and 18-14 his last 2 years but they didnt fire him, he just left for Georgia Tech.

He can now set Saul up. Saul can't seem to support himself and makes stupid statements and decisions. If Saul isn't on staff, I will be shocked.
Agreed, this is all about setting up Saul.

Being the son of Tubby Smith might be enough to get Saul the High Point job for life as long as he keeps his nose clean.

I think when you look at the coaches who have played the recruiting game, is paying a high price for it and being called cheaters. They have hurt their reputation along with their schools.
Some coaches care less how they are looked upon for cheating. Tubby had too much character to take that route.

Gotta be a few steps up from BGC's alma mater at least right (remember BGC coached his alma mater, I think some Rangers sort of deal a few years back too).

Still both can always and forever say they were coach of the finest college basketball team in the country...and in Tubby's case is one of literally only a handful of UK championship coaches.

There's a reason no one wants him. He will say all the right things to be hired, pump his record from when he was hungry, and then sit back and wait on a buyout. He planned the Memphis ordeal from the jump and they got suckered and knew it. Memphis didn't hire Tubby and pay him all of that cash to be mediocre and promote his children, while burning down the relationships which he said he wouldn't do in the city.

That's why he's gone.

Pastner has more success and didn't kill relationships that Memphis has always had. Memphis just figured out quickly what was happening.

Tubby maxed himself out for his family and AD's are morons. This was always Tubbys plan, he's been retired for years.

Pastner was awful and resorted to hiring recruits daddy's and having undesirables around the program.

Run for your life High Point, don't join the ranks of UK, Minnesota and Memphis, don't become Low Point U. Texas Tech has new life as well.

Good coach. Good man. High Point is probably a good spot for him at this point in his career.

Tubby told me 3 years you may have faulty info

[Update Aug. 9 at 10:20 a.m.] The new contract includes a clause stating Memphis would pay Smith's buyout over double the amount of time remaining on his deal if he were to be fired without cause by the university. Therefore, if Smith is fired with two years remaining on his contract, the buyout would be paid over four years.

Bowen said Tuesday the protracted negotiations were due largely to the installation of the school’s new Board of Trustees last March and the implementation of new language in the university’s contracts for high-profile coaches, in consultation with Rudd, the university’s general counsel and other campus leaders.
