Tubby Smith bemoans expectations, distractions at Memphis

The think that plagued Tubby is thinking that it was he (a black coach) that was against the system... He was in over his head at UK... He wanted to be the underdog, but in doing so, he was destroying UK basketball, and enjoyment...

He and his inside the wall system was mum on everything... Not one secret got outside his wall... He didn't understand that we was for him, not scheming against him... The worse thing of all, he was tight with his money... He refused to give a guard a scholarship, because he would be recruiting against his son...

He could have had better guards than his son, but he chose not too, so he could give his son playing time... Tubby had the chance to add a player on scholarship, but in doing, Tubby would have to pay for his son's tuition... Not Tubby Smith... He placed Saul on full scholarship...

Zip forward to Cal, who has his son on the team, but Cal is paying for the scholarship... This is the difference...

Oh, one more thing, he let the world think that UK was full of racist wanting rid of him... Not true... We gave Tubby every opportunity... I like the guy, but that was shameful that he would leave without so much as defending the fans that had backed him... Leaving the world to draw their own conclusion about UK... Of course, that means that UK will be even darker in the minds of the nation... Almost unforgivable...

He was on the plane going for a new job, before fans knew he was gone... This wasn't about race in any way, but Tubby Smith made it about race... Much like Obama... I was for Obama his first term, I'm now ashamed to say, but I reaped the whirl wind of that choice...

I still want the best for Tubby and thank him for all he did for UK, but I don't respect him like I would, if he had left under different circumstances....

Don't forget that his agent reached out to Minnesota in December of 2006.

I gave Porter the nod because Harrow hasn't sexually abused any teenagers that I know of.

(Too soon?)

He might have slept with some high school girl but at least he didn't cry constsntly. Ha

I hated Harrow. Watching him blubber after that Vanderbilt SEC tourney game made it even worse.

Never. Nothing worse than a guy using a position of power to lure in underage kids.

1) You're a Uk basketball player...you can basically get what you want

2) Yes, age is arbitrary, but we need to have some sort of standards in society. Porter used his position to lure in a 14 year old. Come on

The second part is undoubtedly true.
I had forgotten about Porter since I tried to block out the Billy Clod years, but you're right;
But the first part of your statement may have some competition.

That allways boggled my mind why He wasnt the hire. The program would of never had that decade of mediocrity IMO plus I truly believe we would be sitting on 9-11 titles. Plus the BACK YO BACK gator titles might of been ours as well. Yeah I know its speculation but Billy D was way better then Tubby. UF Ran the conference pretty much a solid 8-10 years really. I know Tubby won few SEC and had handful of decent seasons but nothing in comparison to what Billy was doing at UF. If Billy was doing that at UF how much more would he have done at UK. We will never know but I bet he would have atleast 2 titles if Billy D was the coach inbetween Pitino and Cal.
Was Donovan ever seriously considering the UK job? I know there was a lot of speculation after Flubby left.

Absolutely and Cal Should of been here tight after Tubby! I blame that on Mitch the Bit-h! That might of cost us a title as well. Who knows who we would of Had to go along with Rose.
Mitch just about buried the basketball program for a long time with his bumbling hire of Billy Clod. From what I heard he was pretty much forced to fire BCG by the boosters.

I know you're joking, but sex crimes are a little worse than being a wuss. Lol.

True. But Harrow was such a puss that he comes close to matching a sex offender. I'm joking though...somewhat.

Was Donovan ever seriously considering the UK job? I know there was a lot of speculation after Flubby left.

He was taking the Orlando Magic job, that's why he wasn't interested.

You're one of my favorite posters on this site so I hope this doesn't make you mad . Practically every defender of Tubbys tenure at UK admit they knew him . That's why I think their judgment is a little clouded . It's impossible for them to be unbiased. I would probably be the same .

Not offended in the least. I met Tubby and Donna while he was an assistant here and the boys were playing junior pro bball.

When he came back I had BBN and we covered the team - that was the only difficult time for me to be unbiased because I saw them all the time.

My previous quote regarding HOF and longevity not being the reason, is that his race will guarantee him a spot and he was probably borderline with the accomplishments he has had.

I say this because other than Nolan and JT the only other black coaches are 1 that won 1 NIAA championship, 1 that won one Div 2 ship. And of course the worst of all John Cheney.

If John Cheney is deserving Tubby should be president of the HOF.

Tubby didnt produce nearly well enough for UK, not sure how anyone could say he did. Great guy, but he wasn't the workhorse needed here.

I am afraid some people are seriously misremembering 1997 though...

Donovan had been a coach at freaking Marshal for 2 years and UF sucked big time when Kruger left. They took a big chance with Billy.

Many people wanted Tubby. Many thought he would bring Pitino's style which he never really bought into.

He was a former assistant here that did the following:

Was great at Tulsa - Beat UCLA and Oklahoma State in their first NCAA bid then beat Illinois the next year - great underdog wins.

He goes to UGA and wins 20 both seasons and gets to the sweet 16.

People were not mad we hired Tubby.

20 year anniversary of 98 ship coming up in 2018.

Will we do anything for the team and invite Tubby back? or will it be recognized but at a distance like Rick and the 96 team last year?

Yep gave up our season tickets during the lack luster Rondo years, playing stall ball with top talent and then under recruiting....but its not like he bailed on us...he left when we wanted him out. Didn't go to a rival or SEC team, hasn't been very successful so nothing to hate on...like Rick's greed, betrayal in his return to UL and laundry list of embarrassing behavior to try and compete at the level he threw away here.

As for the lost Billy G episode that followed...that's on Mitch and Company not doing their homework.

I'ld cheer Tubby and the 98 group if he came back to Rupp. His biggest mistake was not having higher quality assistants and recruiters around him.

With Memphis' a** holist behavior to Cal the last couple years, doubtful we'll see Memphis at Rupp (I guarantee if he was at Texas Tech still, we'd see it)

As long as threads like this continue to exist on this site, a portion of our fan base will continue to be labeled as racist. This forum is where many journalists come to get material for their pieces, and they can still usually find a thread dishing hate on Tubby Smith, all these years later. For some members of this site, it's the only topic they post about. That speaks volumes.

Good idea. Let's all just refuse to give opinions on anyone of color, or of any other ethnicity while we're at it, because there are race batters out there who desire to find a racist around every corner.

No thanks.

Print out or post his results since leaving UK, with no name beside them, and see what opinions you get.

If they find racism in any of these posts in here, they're simply assholes with a biased agenda

Truthfully, it really was a missed opportunity while he was at Texas Tech. I really think a jersey ceremony would have heeled a lot of old wounds. Could have brought in Tech for a game, would've been broadcast on ESPN

Now that he's at Memphis...won't happen

It would be very classy to play Memphis in Rupp next year and honor Tubby.

Then beat them by 30 just because their fans suck so bad.

It's a shame they pulled that crap on Cal last year. Can you imagine the ratings for that game?!?!

All that I know is they should of hired BILLY D over Tubby back in 97.

Why? He had 2 years of experience at Marshal and didnt even make the NIT either year.

I am not sure he was even 30 years old yet with a 35-20 record in the Southern Conference.

That is not a potential UK head coach resume.

He played a great style but hadn't proven anything at the time.

Tubby was a crappy hire and I never liked it. Not cause he was black but his style of play etc... i remember Pitino allways kicking his ass by 30 while he coached UGA! Hell Tubby fell into a title in 98 but after that he allways crapped down his leg and recruiting went to $#!+. Never was a big Tubby guy!

That's fine but Tubby had a way better resume than Billy at the time. Looking back its easy to say we should have hired Billy.

But I bet you wouldnt have loved him so much if he did here what he did at UF the first 2 years.. win 13 and then 15 games. He would have been out of here by his 3rd season.

Well considering we did nothing for the 50th anniversary of Rupp's Runts or the 25th anniversary of the Unforgettables (no special, no nothing!)...that's not very likely :( And that's a real shame you know?

Your probably right but wat kind of players could of Billy got here? I bet he would of done better then Tubby, but hindsight is 20/20

Not sure Billy could have won it in 98 - regardless of the Tubby bashing, he did some coaching in that tournament - especially going small vs Duke.

But even if Billy recruited most of the same players Tubby did I think BD would have done a better job overall, that's pretty obvious now.

Telling people that they can not criticize a basketball coach's performance because of his skin color is actually itself racist.
Curious...does your rule apply to all/any profession? What about college basketball players?

A little history on the pressures of winning at UK...note, it didn't begin with OTS

I don't care what fake news those "journalist" want to push for their agenda. Uk fans are vindicated on the issue. Tubby isn't UK material and thats why he was forced out. Period.

Pushing that agenda shows nothing but soft bigotry of low expectations. If tubby was white no one would have had one issue with him being removed.

If the Internet existed in the 70's, Joe B would have never made it to 78.

Tubby was not the right fit for Kentucky, but still a great coach nonetheless.

Tubby is good when the spotlight is off him and can work with players he wants to play. I think at UK he did well when he had the players that bough into Tubby ball, but that just was not cutting it for UK. He also was thrown off by how players were starting to leave early, he was old school and expected 3-4 years from everyone and thrived with a Senior leader like a Prince, Bogans, Fitch, and Hayes. Also, having to watch Rick work his magic at UofL made Tubby look bad in comparison. Once players like Azibuke, Rondo, Randolph, and others starting leaving he was not the guy to go get a bunch of guys to reload immediately. He was good enough to make us a top team every season, but just had us lacking the elite talent to compete with the big boys at Duke/UNC/ETC. He also had to follow a legend.

His teams from 2002-03 through the 2004-05 season were some amazing teams to watch. Bogans, Fitch, Hawkins, Azibuke, Daniels, Hayes, Estill, Sparks, Rondo, and those guys had some great memories in there. Bogans healthy with a healthy ankle and a better shot against MSU, 2 Final 4's and a possible 2003 national title would have us all thinking of him a lot differently. The last year was bad, but who knows..maybe adding in Patterson, Lucas, and Draymond Green the next 2 years to team up with Jodie Meeks, Crawford, Bradley, and even Morris staying 1 more year could have had UK right back. Tubby is not suited for today's game, Calipari is and we have the right guy.

Tubby hasn't had a winning conference record since leaving UK. that's not great.

He wasn't getting Patterson and Lucas. I can't rememeber how some have forgotten how awful our roster was about to be. It was a grim situation. Patterson would have followed Lucas if Tubby was here. Patterson said Clyde blew him off his feet.

I'm still not even sold we would have ended up with Green.

Just curious. Is the CLOD using Tubby to sharpen their claws for Calipari if we lose in the NCAA Tourney this year.

I guess you guys don't really realize that in your attempt to piss on Tubby's reputation where all that is landing, huh? Sure as heck isn't sticking to him.

Good to see you're at it again. You say it's not landing on him, but since he has left I've not heard of him being mentioned as one of top coaches, not once. Most of the country now realize that he is simply a mediocre coach. And guess what, you and all the others, that said UK was lucky to have him and we couldn't do better, Cal is simply proving what a good coach with a true work ethic can do here.

But the reason I love rehashing his many many failures and his never ending dance to stay one step ahead of the pink slip is because of the mountains of shit and name calling that were thrown our way because we knew he was a fraud. The fact that you can't see after failures at Minn and TT just shows that you refuse to see it.

That's part of the problem with some people that are uber defensive about Tubby...the internet allows them to see and hear opinions outside of their live in person circle of friends....sometimes leading to false assumptions.

correlation doesn't imply causation
