Towles was the hero tonight

We could have lost by 2 touchdowns at home to Eastern Kentucky, who is garbage, and some would still back the decision to play Patrick. It's become one of those topics, and some are just going to take sides now, regardless.

Having said that, we're 4-1 under him, somehow. (weaker schedule than I've seen in years is actually how, but whatever)

I hope Towles is the answer. Drinking watching games on the weekends I go hard on him, but seriouslly, I want him to take UK where I've never seen us go. Shoving your head up your ass and ignoring his glaring issues won't help us get there. Stoops needs to do a better job of letting him play to his strength though. He's not scrambling nearly enough. Did Stoops learn nothing from the Missouri game?

That's what annoys me the most... These people don't understand... I WANT PT TO BE THE ANSWER!! I want to win unlike any other, and I want him to be the QB that leads us there... But right now his inconsistency isn't showing that he can do that and I refuse to sugar coat it like some do

You're not being unreasonable. Patrick is still growing, and I will stand by my statements that Stoops and company haven't done him much good this season by chopping his f'ing legs off when clearly he's at his best when he's got that option. Patrick doesn't maneuver well in the pocket with lots of things going on around him. He's too touchy. Half of his plays should be designed to run the football.

The TD pass to Badet was HORRIBLE. He was wide open. He threw it so BAD that only way he could catch it was to lay out fully extended and dive. Truly a great reception on what should have been an easy pitch and catch. PT totally has no touch. He just lobbed the ball towards the end zone and Badet made a heroic catch. How many times was Bone wide open on the short out and he threw the ball at his ankles? He threw 2 int's and got away with at least 2 more. When he made up his mind up to throw the slant the 3rd time to Baker and the corner jumped the route, it was just like the Vandy game last year only he dropped the ball.
Unless Barker is played in the 1st quarter, he will never play this year, because Towles will never play well enough to have the game in hand so Barker can get some snaps without risking even more of o QB controversy.

I will have to go back and watch the game, but it appeared that EKU was blitzing almost non-stop. They also paid no attention to the 'read' in the read option, or any efforts we made at play action. So part of the problem the O-line faced, and will continue to face involves simple numbers. Against those scenarios the QB must read the defense and get the ball to where it needs quickly. Again I will have to go back and look at the film but he should be seeing man coverage all over the field. An accurate read and a quick release would have destroyed the defense we were facing. That didn't happen.

Towles is our QB and it is apparent that barring an injury or just a total collapse he is going to remain the QB. So any criticism here is not about playing Barker. So, what we are saw Eastern doing on defense is going to be a pattern we are going to see the rest of the year. Towles is who he is. At this point, to help him win games I hope we 1) ditch the read option; 2) call more bootlegs or plays that will slide the pocket. Especially a slide to the right to get him away from the left side where most of our oline problems are; 3) run more max protect plays. Towles isn't going to read the play fast enough to deal with the blitz so give him extra protection and let the WRs be responsible for getting open against the coverage. and 4) Run more plays designed to get the ball out early. We saw that against Missouri. Those little quick outs to the sidelines and the 5 yard slants didn't net a ton of yards but they helped build Towles confidence.

Towles was not the 'hero' of this game. He had a pretty bad night most of the evening. But that doesn't make him the Goat of the game either. He made some plays down the stretch to put us in a position to win. Right now there is enough film on him right now for defenses to adjust to his tendencies. It is import now that he make his own adjustments and continue to improve. The competition ahead is going to be much greater than what we saw last night.

Congrats to the team on another win. Now let's get ready for Auburn!

The 45 yard pass to Bone was a dump pass? The TD pass to Badet was a dump pass?

Had he played, Barker surely would have only throw 20 yard lasers downfield...completing all of them....and would have had 5 TD passes. no INTs. And we'd all be discussing how bad we crushed EKU tonight.

But...instead - we get to discuss how horrible Towles is as the starting QB for a 4-1 football team.

I am specifically talking about the "come back" which neither of those throws dealt with. The throw to Badet and Bone were great throws, Towles can make some big league throws, my problem is the next drive he'll make some high school throws ... he should not still be doing that. If you only want to focus on the 2 great throws fine, but I watched the entire game, Towles didn't play great.

Wide open.... ?

He had steps on the DB, the ball was thrown to the inside, it was off a little but hitting a 4.3 wr downfield in the numbers is not easy. Most QBs, wr's and coaches will tell you that on deep balls put it where only the receive can catch it or nobody. Now Badet made a hell of a play, the only way PT could have done better was to throw it 2-3 feet closer to him. Thats not much on such a long toss with very a fast wr.

Bailed out...? WR's make plays every game. At least gripe about the slants that are too high or behind receivers. Everyone talks about how inaccurate he is and then when he gets it close on tough passes like this and Baker TD he still sucks?

Peyton and Brady have wr's that make great catches too. Our QB is not great and yet we still complain when he does not throw perfect lasers 45 yards and tightly covered corner passes that are caught for TDs...?

I'm thinking a shared award between Towles, Baker, Kemp, CJ Johnson, and Stamps.

Stamps made a solo open field tackle on that critical stop at the 3:39 mark and if he had not they may have scored but certainly had a 1st down.

We beat a shitty team tonight and Towles was completely bailed out on bad throws yet again. He's an OK quarterback who needs to do lots of running and less throwing. He was almost handed his ass by freakin eastern tonight and some of you want to pat him on the back.

The whole team needs to answer for this then move on. But Towels wasn't anything other than inconsistent like he always is. Some people just look for reasons to pump him but he's just what he is.

SC, the majority on here were not happy with the way that we have played but I will never be dumb enough to look a gift horse in the mouth when we win.

We are not hearing Stamps name as much this year so far. That was a great play and the INT for a TD last game was too but I am hoping to see AJ really make some big plays consistently each game.

Stamps made the open field tackle of the game. If we could do that when we blitz the QB instead of trying high arm tackles we would lead the SEC in sacks.

I believe the coaches still don't know what to do with Towles or our offensive line. It's almost like they have become fans and call plays based upon what they hope will happen and not what they have seen happen over the last five games. Towles in particular seems misused.

Well they've done pretty well so far and we are 4-1. Maybe they know more than I do.

Here is another example I do not understand from people, and S&C is not the only to have stated this.

In regards to the QB...

What difference does it make that it was eastern?

They can sack a QB just like an NFL team. Do you think that PT should just shake off their pass rushers and throw it through their DB's?

Our wr's also were not running wide open all night.

Patrick has been inaccurate and struggled with pressure vs good teams and bad. These have nothing to do with the NAME of the opponent. It is about his own inequities along with no run game and poor protection.

You want to talk about freakin eastern you should do it in the context of fundamentals and strength -

We did not win the line of scrimmage on either side for 3.5 quarters, they had one super star on defense but we are supposed to be overall bigger and better as an SEC team. That was my biggest concern.

Way too much emphasis on PT in this game. Yep, played a sorry first half. Went 19-22 for 218 yards, 3 TDs and no picks in the second half. What else is there that he could do. He had no running game support, little OL support, and last time I checked, he doesn't play defense. He is in the upper half of SEC QB's the season and the SEC has the top rating for QB's overall. What in the hell is wrong with some of you, S&C in particular. Not to knock our OL, but if PT was behind one of the great OL's in the SEC, he wouldn't be in the upper half of SEC QB's. He'd be in the top 2 or 3 and he has room to be even better. QB's don't perform in a vacuum. His success depends more on everyone around him than any other single player. Now, flame away with more irrational posts.
