(Thoughtful) "Coach Speak" isn't as bad as I thought it was

I can see why UK basketball coach is a 10 year job.

When you watch the pregame and especially the postgame, you see how much effort and emotion Pope (and Cal early on) puts into explaining and describing the players and what's going on in the game. And he's accounting for any or every player who played minutes.

It's a lot of words. And there are only so many words in the English language to describe something. For example, a basketball player, or a game. And players come and go, and many of them have most of the same skills and games follow the same patterns.

Over a 35 game season, talking about players and games for 10-15 minutes, it's exhausting to come up with NEW ways to describe the same old things that happen. Multiply that by 10 years. That's 3500-5200 minutes. Now imagine that over a 25 year career. Eventually a coach will run out of words and start repeating himself, whether he means to or not. I can see why some coaches would be like "blah blah blah" after a while.

It makes sense why coaches often get accused of "coach speak." Not saying it doesn't happen. But a certain level of repetition is inevitable. It's probably a good idea to expect that and to guard against being overly critical. This is not to give Cal a pass. Clearly he had gone past his 'expiration date.' But that is also sort of the point. Coaches should guard against this too, because media access is part of the job and part of the salary expectation.

Well, there's honesty and there's honesty. Being transparent about a player injury is one thing. Telling the cameras that the fans irritate you is another.
As for our previous coach concerning not liking the fans, " out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks."

Cal hated BBN. Too many fans knew he was full of BS and his coach speak just didn't work with the knowledgeable fans.

Cal didn’t like Bennie Talk. And since most of us fall into that category, he didn’t like most of us.

Good points, at first Cal was gregarious and endearing with the media and fans. It’s easy when you’re going to final fours and everyone is hanging on your every word. Cal lost it and never wanted to be held accountable for anything, he just wanted “it is what it is” to be an acceptable attitude. The passion is just not there anymore with Cal, he doesn’t enjoy coaching, but he’s addicted to the power and influence he wields with him. That’s what turns people bitter and less successful and that’s exactly what has happened with Cal.

Cal like BBN when we liked him. When stuff started going a bit south and the pressure ramped up, that's when the disdain began. Cal is very much a "don't cross" kind of guy. When you're with him, he's with you. If you criticized him though, right or wrong, he would disown you.

This is probably the best description of Calipari’s decline that I’ve read
Great post

He absolutely said “You come after me or mine, I’m burning your whole village “ . I’m no Goodman fan but the riff between them is because he criticized Cal and Cal tried to have him fired .

If we are consistently putting on a top-shelf product and Kentucky is a program that matches its own expectations historically on the court, I don’t think fans care if Pope farts into a microphone.

No doubt, but you don’t have to say the same thing every single game, that’s why Cal became stale. Just describe the game that happened. What was good, what needs work. Who played well, give some props. Take a few questions and go home.

I can accept "coach speak" when it is geared toward being respectful or polite. For example, Pope saying Jackson State or a few of the other awful teams we have played as being "good teams" is fine. Yes, it might be honest to say they suck, but it would be disrespectful especially since the program selected to play them. But, when it comes to made up stuff that is when the challenge for a fans' trust occurs. Cal's "tweaks" or similar comments were a joke and along with some other comments trust was lost.

With Cal (including myself) there were so many posts about playing undeserved favorites, forcing players out of their position, no in-game adjustments, well on and on but Cal would never be open about anything. Pope's communication style is positive reinforcement but so far he has stated the observational mistakes as well. I can't imagine Pope changing that personality no matter how many years or post game interviews he eventually has. It will be interesting with the fans when we lose with the criticism or thoughts on what was handled wrong. I just feel Pope won't run and hide from it.

No I get it. I just see Pope pouring his entire being into these postgames and I realize it's not something you can sustain forever.

We'll see.
Perhaps a larger intellect/ vocabulary/a respect for the fans, and their unquenchable thirst for a connection to the team will keep it fresh.
I still can't keep up with half of the bball jargon he is spouting yet.
That alone will keep it fresh for a bit.
A "deadly serious about winning" attitude is also a pleasure.
Signed,
Benny
