This Loss is on Cal and being Lottery Crazy

QUOTE="ala_kat2, post: 3046124, member: 1574"]Cal is not coaching this team to win games for UK, but to make sure his kids get to the NBA.
The two go hand in hand. Are you so dense that you can't realize that? These players that Cal is helping reach their dreams are the same exact players who are winning all these games for UK.

UK hasn't gone to four of the last five Final Fours based on the play of the Willis' of the world. If it wasn't for those "pet one and dones", then UK probably still wouldn't have been to a Final Four or won a title since '98. I mean, seriously, how much dumb can be posted in one thread?[/QUOTE]

Finally. Common sense

Your advocating playing wilis. Someone has to sit then. How many mins do u wanna give him?

People putting way too much into a December loss. Let them play. Let them figure it out.

In every year but one Cal has had this team playing the best basketball in March. This will be the same thing this season

If Willis is playing well, then he can get as many as he wants. That doesn't mean I expect Willis or Skal for that matter to put us on their backs and lead us to a title. This ain't Danny and he Miracles.

and to piggyback...those selfish NBA players were diving all over the place for loose balls and gave a damn hard effort (albeit, too late)...but IMO this game either brings more physical and emotional play (leading to a very good NCAAT run) or it goes way south...I prefer and believe my first theory.

Right. To suggest that they didn't give effort is silly.

I saw good effort. Just poor execution right now

I have my knocks on Cal but this is a beyond stupid take. Cal wants the best talent he can put on the floor and he did this that year. Skal so far has been a disappointment but you wouldn't of known that in August from the fans on here. UK has 3 PGs but what do you want him to do, tell Murray no thanks bc we have 2 PG already?

News flash! We're not going to the FF every year and that's ok.

Just freakin moronic.

Agreed. But we have a long way to go. This team could still make a final four.

We have had enough Lotto Picks. And he fails to realize that while it is nice to have Lotto Picks in the NBA, the majority of Kentucky Fans don't care about that.

Stop trying to make Skal another Lotto Pick.

We have other more deserving players on the team. Play Willis. Play Humph. Hell.... try Tai. Try Charles. Who cares. Play the players who want to play.

I'm tired of hearing, "Skal has had a great few days of practice." Listen, I don't believe you, you need more people.

If that's the case, how come none of it has translated into the actual games for over a month now?

I don't want to get down on the kid, because hopefully he turns it around. But willingly playing him, when he does not deserve to be out there is a disservice to THE TEAM, which this game is about, and the other players on the team.

And to be truthful it could be hurting future recruiting efforts if they show guys who are working hard and improving like Willis, but can't get on the court because a kid who is projected to be a Top 3 pick gets to run around the court, get pushed around, and get the ball taken from him from guards. Who would want to come here for that?

What if Skal has to come back next year? He won't play over the guys we have coming in if he plays like this.

And a lot of the same stuff can be said for Poythress too. He's been here 4 years and still looks clueless at times. Making stupid fouls. Not holding onto rebounds. You can't have muscles and not hold onto rebounds. And no, it's not even like KAZ situation where he just looks the part, because KAZ scored.

Cal doesn't know what he's doing. I wish you were our coach.

I think if you take a poll from boosters and season ticket holders Cal was hired to win Championships for KY not to form a NBA Jr. League. If it's not Ky first he should then go.
Again, the two go hand in hand. Name the last team to win a title that didn't have at least 2-3 future NBA players on it? Guess what? You can't. Bottom line, without players talented enough to play in the NBA you are not winning a title.

Listen up genius, Cal has won us a title already and not only did he wipe out our longest final four drought in our history, he has had us playing on the last weekend of the tournament four out of 6 seasons. He has won by far the most tournament games in the last 6 years and it's not even close. He's won the most regular season games as well doing it his way. The boosters and whiners can shove it.

We have future NBA players. And enough to give another team 2 or 3 future NBA players. But you also need complimentary players.

And your point is? No one said you don't need complimentary players. But I do know one thing for an absolute fact; playing Willis more and Skal less might help UK here and now, but it hurts them much more in the long run, when the games actually matter.

A lot.
Willis has more maturity than the freshmen and should be playing based on his performances when he does get significant minutes. Evidently, if you come to KY to play for Cal and you don't get anointed to be a one-and-done, you might as well leave and go some place where they allow upperclassmen to play. Willis should be playing over Labissiere, Poythress and Briscoe based on their performance today. But Cal will never change. I'm getting sick of watching freshmen play over more talented and experienced players. We're nothing more than an NBA development team, and UK Athletics is sponsoring it. I could care less whether these kids make millions in the NBA or not. I want to see the best product on the floor that we have, and that the best players NOW play, not just the ones with the supposedly best chance of playing in the NBA.

Losing to an underdog has never happened in college basketball , that is cause for concern .
Yes but I think it shows that this loss didn't sting very much.

I wonder if the sentiment will change if we lose to UL

I really hope that Skal will play with an inspired effort Sat.

A lackluster performance against a Mathiang-less UL, especially if it leads to a loss will not be good for Skal.

Forget the internet, he will hear it on campus if this occurs.

Of course we need to win enough games to make the tournament first.

The losses really bring out the stupid in our fan base sometimes

we can be critical during losses while still being fans. there is no way we should have lost last year with all that talent. and there is no way we should have lost to either osu or ucla this year. both teams suck.

No, that is not "an absolute fact". And it's pretty laughable that you would say as much. Skal could play less, and then earn his time on the court by performing.

I guess some of you weren't around for the '11 and '14 final 4 teams that took a lot of L's before figuring it out.

That's a good point. Cal is a HOF coach and this team is loaded with talent. Should be the best combination for a FF.

And he's won a nc in his 6 years which is above average not to mention 4 FFs and that we hadn't been to one in 14 years when he got here.

Did you honestly just say that Willis is more talented than Skal, Briscoe and Poythress? Yeah, you've officially lost it. Probably time for a break before you embarrass yourself any further.

Also, you say you want to see the best product on the floor, correct? Well, newsflash, but the one and done freshman that have been here since Cal has been here are UK's best product.

Again, do you not realize that these same freshman that you are crying about are the sole reason for UK winning an much as they have. How do you not realize that?

Seems like Coach Cal has been putting the best product on the floor the last few years.

Skal may march to a different drum beat and follow the Towles path. A little early to say but there are hints.

Cal definitely plays his pet "one-and-dones" over more experienced players, particularly talking about Willis. He lets Briscoe throw up bricks and praises him for playing tough. But let Mulder or Willis make one mistake and to the bench they go.
This team pksys better when Willis is in the game, but even if Cal realizes this he refuses to play him.

Did you not hear Cal say after the game Willis has been hurt and hobliing around for several days. geez.

The best players play. It is pretty simple. UK fans always think they know more than the coach. This is not some newfound stance with Coach Cal, although his amazing recruiting success magnifies the issue. People bitched about Pitino not playing the right guys, Tubby, Coach G (Ok, I'm giving those posters a pass on this one!), etc. After Coach Cal leaves and UK is not as good year in and year out for a while people will bitch about the new coach not playing the right guys AND why isn't he recruiting better? Just like they did with Tubby.

The fact of the matter is, most of the time coaches know more than the dumb***es on this board (including me) about who to play and what buttons to push. Not always, but most of the time. Having said all that, do I wonder a little why Willis can't play at all after scoring in double digits a few games and showing some hustle the last game and doing some good things? No, I do not get that, but I am wondering if there is more to the story than just he "isn't good enough" to get some minuts here and there. We may never know the whole story there, and hence, Cal looks like an ahole to some fans for not playing him.

Ok, blunt talk time: Skal is definitely not playing well right now, but if he does not come around...this team will never be anything anyways so people should just accept that now, today. The team has negative 5 percent of a shot at making the Final Four, much less winning a title, if Skal does not get stuff right. 2015 is almost over and 2016 is coming soon so he has time, but we need him if this team is to improve. Other quick notes...please God someone else help poor Murray out. He can have more games like today, but no one else helped at all really. Poy crapped the bed again and again, Ulis sucked in the clutch, Lee had some bad moments, etc. People always want to blame the one and dones but down the stretch I saw Murray keep UK in the game while Poy, Ulis (veteran players) wilted under the pressure. That does not fit peoples' agendas though who hate Cal and the fact he recruits the best players (as opposed to not doing so, which is clearly what some on here want for whatever bizarre reason), so it is all on the frosh.

Idk who should start at each position but it is time to run this team fully through Murray. He may have some off nights, but he is the ONLY guy who I trust can give us 15-30 points a night if he puts up a lot of shots. Ulis continues to suck at shooting so cannot count on him, so he just needs to set up Murray, which he is good at doing as good PG. The front court...who the hell knows. We have a bunch of WCS show up one night and disappear the next types...is what it is right now. I'm done, 36 hour cooling off period for me until Monday morning. I came on here to see the board and as expected total chaos and stupidity reigns! To those sane ones of you, I wish a happy rest of the weekend and remember it is just a game.

That's just it. Neither of those teams suck. A road loss to ucla isn't a bad loss

Osu hasn't played well but they are young.

Both those teams will make the tourney

Some of you posters can't step away from the extreme. You can criticize a player or coach without saying, "They need to be fired."
or
"I can do a better job."
or
"Cal doesn't know what he's doing."
or
"We have been unsuccessful."

The fact is we took an L to a mediocre team with less talent than us, and there is a reason.
Yep, and the reason is Cal is doing what he knows how to do best and that is to get a team to gel in time for the tournament. Kids at this age don't listen unless there is some sort of pain involved. I guarantee you this loss hurt them more than it did the fan base, at least the sane one's. I know there is certain segment that needs to be medicated at this point. Does the loss today really matter? No! Am I disappointed? Of course but we lost 9 games in 2010-11 before losing by 1 point in the NC game. I'll take Cal's coaching over anyone else's on this board.

why dont you all call up Coach Cal and tell him where he is going wrong, clearly you all know more than he does

Amen. All fanbases have these kind of folks. Sure seems like UK has more though. I can only imagine what a conversation would be like with someone like this.

UK = bigger fan base than most. More room for bad fans.

Tho also more room for good fans as well.

We have a lot of both lol

Look at it from Cal's point of view. He targets the top prospects and recruits them on the promise that they'll be a top NBA pick after only one year of college. He can't then bench them without going back on his word. He's promised playing time to certain prospects and he has an obligation to fulfill his end of the bargain.

But this isn't true. Unless he's lying to us he's constantly said that playing time and nba are not discussed when meeting with recruits.

That's not the reason Skal is still playing. Cal realizes this is a kid who hasn't played a lot of basketball recently. It's gonna take some time.
