That would be even more of a mess than now.

Something certainly needs to be done. But what?

The NCAA can’t regulate it. The courts have rendered them useless as an enforcement body on this.

I know there’s people in Ky that have the means to make rules for Ky.

But that would handicap Ky if the other states don’t do the same.

I don’t know what the answer is. But I think the problems are over blown too.

From what I understand only congress can make any rules on this, and they don't seem to care right now.

The NCAA screwed this up so bad because they dug their heels in for far too long. The ideal world is basically if businesses wanted to hire players for autographs, appearances, commercials, whatever they would go through the schools and the schools would provide the money. % of jersey sales and other apparel with the players name or likeness would be given to the player through the school.

What we have now is not NIL. It’s just paying players like they are professional athletes. The NCAA can’t even change the rules if they want to because most states have legislation for NIL. If they continue along this there needs to be multi year contracts

I don't buy this argument of "The NCAA waited too long!" and hence why we have what we have. Based on what courts have done, I can almost 100% guarantee that any action by the NCAA would have been tossed out, just like almost all of its other regulations have been because they've "inhibited a player's ability to earn." Now, do I fault NCAA leadership for screwing up lots of things? Sure, but I don't see any way that them taking the steps you've outlined here would have survived court challenge short of a CBA with the players.

What this mess will lead to is either a more professionalized model or schools/fanbases are just going to vote with their feet and quit following and paying attention. I see the latter as a gradual, not immediate process. You are already seeing an erosion at the smaller school level as attendance is down. I can see that gradually filtering up as people either don't want to pay higher ticket prices for NIL (which Tennessee is aiming to do) or they realize that their school has no chance to compete in this environment.

Wish it was incentive based with no money giving to the season is over. Here's your check get out or come back your choice. Alot of shady and such as always but the current system is not well thought out.

The combination of the portal and NIL makes it hard to stomach college sports. I could see myself not even watching in a few years. I love the fact that these kids can make money but the current situation is just not good. Truthfully I think the portal rules are the worst. Essentially everyone is playing on the last year of their contract and is a free agent.

There would be a legal cap and then we are back to dropping bags under the table.

I had thought someone posted that our key players got 250k for a final four. Can someone confirm?

To make all major teams competitive. You have to have a salary cap per team. Wanna spend 2 million on one guy, ok that leaves you 3 million for the other 10 players. Unlimited spending is gonna ruin the sport.

College players don't draw a salary from the school.
What do you do if you have an outlier like Bronny James on the team who.makes millions in legit NIL?
