The Really Good UK Player People Have Forgotten About Thread

Dirk Minniefield was pretty good. I'll never forgive him for not dunking the ball to win the Dream Game, but he was solid for four years.

Randolph "just the fax, ma'am" Morris

His time at UK was a bit on the nutty side, to say the least... but he turned into a pretty good player during his last season. He should've come back for his senior year, but that probably would've been another disaster with BCG.

Like something from The Purloined Letter: Larry Conley, PG for Rupp's Runts. I think people overlook him because he has professional modesty in his capacity as an announcer.

Larry Steele, G/F. Had a 9 year career in the NBA. Including a championship ring. Led tje NBA in steals in 1974.

Jim Andrews, C. He bridged the Rupp/Hall eras. Averaged at least 20 pts with double-digit rebounds his last 2 years.

Conley was far from a point guard. He played small forward on Rupp's Runts. Kron was the point guard and Dampier was the shooting guard. Conley never played point guard in his entire career at UK.

I've been watching this thread for day or so. There are so many names from the past, it has been a fun read.

I'm going to go with Melvin Turpin. He was a Lexington boy. He played hard for us and nearly brought home the marbles along with Sam Bowie and that great team they had. It broke my heart how he left us. Some of us really have great memories of his time at Kentucky. I hope he knew that. I hope he knew what contribution he made to the Cats.

Turpin was once quoted in SI saying, "Charles Barkley has a lot of loose lip." (I hope I am remembering that correctly) Anyway, my wife and I to this day call Barkley, "Loose Lips." Loved big Mel!

I don't recall that exact quote. I remember it as a "lot of mouth" but that was so many years ago. I could never understand how that "little fat boy" from Auburn could just give our great athletes such a hard time. Of course, when he got to the NBA he showed me what a pathetic judge of talent I am. What a fabulous basketball player.

Yeah, that team with Mel and Sam is probably my favorite one, even considering 78 and 98.

Two names....Mike Flynn a 6'3" point guard from Jeffersonville, IN who teamed with 6'4" Jimmy Dan Connor from Lawrenceburg, KY on UK's 1975 national runnerup. Two really solid guards.

Now people are listing All-Americans

Fwiw, I listed Kevin Grevey because he's rarely discussed on this board. Tremendous shooter, led the '75 team to a runner up finish, all everything, NBA champion, etc etc. Yet you can go years without seeing the guy get mentioned on this board, and I bet a lot of younger fans don't know much about him.

His son Norm played for Dayton. Every time he shot a three, the fans yelled "Norm!"

Jason Parker

It takes me back every time I see that name. He stayed at an apartment with some girl across the hall from where my girlfriend lived. We hung out a ton back in the day. His problem was he liked to smoke the good stuff a little too much instead of working on coming back from his injury. Nice guy though.

That is literally a mini list of players that will never be forgotten and get numerous mentions in various topics all the time.

Try to sharpen your pencil and get back to work on this thread. Start by understanding the topic and work from there.
