It is amazing to think back and recall just how long we were having these Tubby debates. The overriding theme was that some felt like what UK basketball should always strive to be is similar to what we have now. Not that it should always be this good, but we should always seem to have a legit shot at advancing deep into the tournament.
It was truly disturbing to see how many UK fans abandoned that notion purely in an effort to either make themselves feel less depressed about state of UK basketball during the Tubby era or they just simply would rather defend the coach no matter the situation.
And the most amazing thing is that there were actual debates on these boards about Gillispie up until the day he was canned. Hard to fathom.

No I don't listen or pay attention to him for a number of reasons. I listed them. I think you picked the one that bothered you the most and applied it. The last one was more of a joke, on him.

True dat. That's exactly how I felt. Exasperating when people all around you can't see what's right in front of their faces. Experiencing something very similar this week with these Hog fans down here who start with the presumption of an equivalency between the two programs. Can't reason with someone who insists on harboring a fantasy like that.

I used to get into arguments with boiler on the Purdue board re: Tubby. Could not stand that guy.

All of us being on the same side is a lot better feeling.
I was a proud member of the LOD and the last 8 years prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the LOD was correct. I remember a mod named Woodstock Cat, I think, but he hated the LOD and banned a lot of us. Dep was the leader here and there were other leaders on other boards that assisted in getting 10 loss out. Awwwww, those were the days of big time controversy, anything else today is peanuts in comparison.

Still here...was a card carrying LOD member and early adopter. When I saw the classes we signed in 02 and 03, I began warning friends that the future was not looking good. At the time, we were still doing well on the court, so everyone thought I was crazy.

Wow! I never see some of you guys unless it is in a bash Tubby thread! You know he left in 2007 right? Am I right? But you do you. I congratulate your efforts to remove Orlando Tubby Smith from the program and bring that great Coach in, known as Billy Clyde. Have to take credit for that one too huh? I know I am going to get bashed, but I don't care. Some of you guys are happier about Tubby being gone still than the success UK is now enjoying. Can we live in the as one of our former coach's put it "precious present"? Tubby is gone, get over yourselves. I think some of you are secretly wishing Tubbey were still here so the fight could still be fought. Good day

Actually, I had to smile at some of the names in the thread.

With a post like that, I'd guess JC probably misreads the world.
I think Smoky is probably the one and only person that is happier about Tubby's being gone than he is about our current success. At the end, the thought we didn't deserve Tubby's greatness and was more than happy to see him move to Minnesota.
I was wondering why there wasn't a 3 page thread on here yesterday when Texas Tech lost to Utah. We have this beauty instead.

You nailed it! This was always the crux of the argument that many of us made for all those years -- the standard of excellence argument. It was astounding that a significant portion of the fanbase (and most obnoxiously, former moderators of the old Rainman's board) were in complete and total denial at the time. What we are experiencing now IS Kentucky basketball. Of course, the counter argument was that our expectations were too high -- that Pitino had caught lightening in a bottle -- and that what Tubby delivered was good enough. We were told that it wasn't realistic to set such lofty standards. The fact is that none of us ever expected to win a national championship each year (something often used to characterize the "crazy" Kentucky basketball fan), but only expected to compete for championships on a regular basis. This is Kentucky basketball and that is what we always have done and should always do.
On another note -- wasn't it a guy named SteelersFan (he was a pro-Tubby guy) that dubbed all of us "The Legion of Doom" and assigned us all the characters???
As I said then, if going through Clyde was the penance for getting rid of Tubby and getting the right coach in here (Cal), then it was a price gladly paid by this fan...we make fun of IU and joke that they should hang onto Crean for the exact same reasons other fans (and the media) begged us to keep Tubby (and laughed behind our backs). The jury is in (and has been for a while) on the Tubby Smith argument. With that being said, I think the guy deserves to be inducted in the UK Hall of Fame. He did win a national championship.
The Force is strong with this one. I believe we can still bring him to the Dark Side.

Appreciate no one really piling on. Dep, maybe I did misread the thread, thought it was a bash Tubby thread. I know and he knows it was time for him to go, he gave us a championship and several good seasons, I didn't want him to stay here though. His assistants were, let's say lacking and he wouldn't play the AAU game, his downfalls. I hold no animosity toward him though, so if I read the world wrong so be it
It went way further back than 2001. It started during Tubby's 2nd year. The specific game was the MSU game that year. The battles over calling Tubby out for what he was. In the beginning it was myself and a few others battling Katman. It was legendary. By 2001 he had left but still defended Tubby for another year or so and finally turned. I was only banned from here 2-3 times. I always knew in the back of my mind that there was a "John Calpari" out there. Didn't know who it was exactly but I knew someone like him existed. Now all you can do is marvel at what the real John Calipari has done.
This type of post was what made it enjoyable for me...members like this that couldn't stand even a single post, let alone a thread about TLT....without coming unglued.

Another thing I had managed to forget, TLT. Actually had to think about for a second. Those were some dark days.
Whatever happened to katman2000. He wasn't the most eloquent poster but damn he was passionate. Hope he's doing well and able to enjoy the Calipari era.
LOD helped produce BCG. and saying you wanted cal, and cal only the first go puts you in a very strict minority. donovan was easily #1 on this board. with names like mark few following. there's also a couple points used during those times by LOD brothers to slam others (me being one) that is historically incorrect. tubby left, but history will show he was run out of town. because this is what the national media said at the time. and because he was. and it is obvious. the only reason he may never confirm that is because he may have his banner in the rafters by the time he is retired and would want to release his memoirs. an obvious conflict of interest for both parties.
did he crack? yes. did he flourish in his role here? no. did he fail on the recruiting trail? yep, many many times. was a he a good coach? absolutely hell yes he was. his career ended at uk. just like pitino before him, just like gillispie after him. history shows that you retire at uk, whether you leave or are fired or actually retire. the only exception being sutton who had easily the best pre-uk credentials of any uk coach ever. look at their stats before uk. all these coaches were already winners (bcg way more questionable). tubby and pitino's success pre-uk is undeniable.
