The most underated Guard to play at Kentucky was...

Saul Smith!!!!!

I know it won't be popular, but there is some truth to this.
Was Saul UK-starter quality? No!
Was Saul good enough to be on the team? Yes.
I still blame that we were unable to get a good PG until after Sual left on Pitino. RP had a good PG in Turner, but he had not recruited any backup for the JR Turner. Tubby arrives and sees he needs a backup for Turner, it's too late to sign a decent PG and his best option is his own Son. So that is what he does. Unfortunately, for the next 3 years other coaches use Saul against Tubby in trying to recruit PGs, and so Tubby doesn't get one until entering Saul's SR year, and even then it wasn't a 5* PG, but just an "ok" one in Cliff Hawkins. Saul was mediocre, but some act like he was horrible.

As someone said earlier Truman Claytor,Larry Steele was a wing player (might not have been a guard at UK but close).Tommy Kron was pretty valuable.

All of the ones mentioned were really good, I think Gerald Fitch was one, he was an excellent shooter and brought a lot more to the team than just being noted as a good shooter. From where he was ranked, he came a long way.

Tough kid too who wasn't afraid to take a big shot.

Desmond Allison. R.I.P.

I realize it is before a lot of fan's time but I always thought Larry Johnson never got the credit he deserved. Also, Truman Clater (Clator?). He was a streaky type shooter but when he was on... I seem to recall an SEC tourney game against LSU where Dwight Anderson broke his wrist early and T. C. absolutely took off. Kind of think Jay Shidler was somewhat under rated as well. Had the worst jump shot. Line drives most times but enough of them went in. So many UK seasons have come and gone for me. Difficult to pick just one player I feel was underrated.

Others also mentioned Truman Claytor.

I agree that Claytor was a good player and a good shooter. He was just overshadowed by some UK greats on his 1978 NCAA championship team: Givens, Macy, Robey

Wayne Tuner

^This.

Two national championships, three appearances in the finals. Undisputed floor leader in at least two of those seasons. Defensive bulldog, underrated scorer. When we made the comeback against Duke in 98, everyone else remembers Mills hitting that shot; I remember Turner twisting Wojo ACL inside out. When he graduated, he held the NCAA record for most games played.

Not sure what the deal was with Wojo? I mean I watched Magloire help the kid stretch...

Tubby coached fantastically that tournament, especially vs Duke.

His recruiting cost us more than his bench coaching.

His overall offensive philosophy was somewhere between nonexistent and dicey as well other than to control the pace to keep possessions down.
Sure in game he was tough but coaching is just way more than calling a good play.

The most important parts of coaching happen before the game including recruiting but far from limited to it.

Truman Claytor, Larry Johnson, Dicky Beal, Dale Brown and Anthony Epps all come to mind.

My response was to a comment regarding the 1998 Championship tournament, that's it. He coached very well those 3 weeks.

Oh, I agree and would even extend that to generally true when you are talking in gake bench coaching only.

Sheppard led us and won us a title with sub par coaching. Yep, overrated.
What a trash post. Shep was our best player on a champion team. I'll go with Wayne turner as underrated. Loved Wayne as a kid
