Well, since the saying starts with good, we will start with it as well:

The Good:

Cam Hill - Hit .400 (2-5) this weekend with 2 RBIs. Also had a HBP to load the bases in the 9th. Reached in all three games. Had a throwing error in the Sunday game that seems like it is rightly attributed to him, but it was not really his fault. Golda should have been covering third, but headed shallow left and acted as a cutoff there instead. Golda didn't touch the ball, so can't get the error, but it is ultimately on him.

Trae Harmon - Also hit .400. Struggled in a pinch hitting role, but came on strong in the Sunday game. Got the first home run of the year, and the first of his career with a 3 run blast to left. I imagine the ball will only get bigger for him as the at bats get more frequent.

John Rhodes - Hit last in the lineup in the first two games, but he showed promise. Hit .300 over the weekend thanks to a 2-4 day yesterday. He really hit the ball hard at times. Rhodes did all right at third, but didn't exactly flash gold glove stuff.

These three, combined, through 20 at bats had just 3 strikeouts. So, very good job on them. The three of them also had 2 free bases (BB + HBP).

Mason Hazelwood - Got the start on Saturday and pitched quite well. Went 4 scoreless before getting into a bit of trouble. Gave up just 1 hit and 1 unearned run. Needs to clean up the 3 walks, but opponents hit just .071 against him and that is outstanding. Had 3 strikeouts as well. Not an amazing number, but not mad at it.

Alex Degen - Had one appearance and dominated. 1.2 innings of scoreless and hitless pitching, striking out 4 of 5 batters he faced. Love to see this from the young 6'8 guy.

Cole Stupp - The numbers are high, but the stuff was good and the young kid was just left in a bit too long. That happens. He will bounce back, IMO. Still, he went 2 scoreless and worked out of a monster jam in his first appearance as Roszel stuck him in the lineup with the game tied (IIRC) and the Horned Frogs with 2 on and no outs. He got out of that jam and pitched another scoreless frame before finding his own troubles. Coleman let him down by giving up the two he walked.

The Bad:

Defense. Holy mother of... I didn't believe our defense could get worse... it did. By a whole lot. Last place a year ago at .963 and this year we're currently at .917. We should have actually even had another one tacked to that, but the scorer generously called it a hit. Maybe, maybe, you could blame the change from turf to natural, but the problem was that many of the errors were of the throwing variety and not due to being unfamiliar with the surface. 6 of our starters have at least one error on them so far. Rhodes should have 3, and has to be considered the worst culprit at the moment, but no one is immune, even the pitchers got in the act a couple times.

Schultz - The kid is fairly celebrated and he did have a decent weekend with a double, a single, and and triple, but he also struck out 4 times in 11 at bats and had a couple throwing errors at short.

Breydon Daniel - 6 strikeouts... 0 walks. The kid almost struck out in half of his at bats. Just cannot have that, especially out of a two hole hitter. Hit just .154 over the weekend. Credit for solid defense and a double.

Coltyn Kessler - What a weekend to forget. Kessler is our best returning player by the numbers. He didn't show it in any phase of the game this weekend. Hate to be harsh, but he might as well have stayed in Lexington. Went 0-11 with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts. Behind the plate he had a throwing error, I believe it led to a run. TCU runners also exposed him and his arm all weekend stealing on 6 of 7 attempts, and those 6 weren't even close. I don't know if that is entirely on him, but it isn't a good sign.

Anu/Collett - Going to lump them together. Anu was a major disappointment. Went 0-8. Only positive was an RBI. Collett was only marginally better with a couple of hits, going .182 on the weekend. These guys are supposed to make opposing pitchers fear them. The middle of the UK lineup was largely ineffective, and really didn't even hit the ball all that hard as far as I remember.

Middle infield - Schultz, Curtis, Grace, Golda. Nothing inspiring here defensively and the offensive numbers are lacking. Curtis and Grace combined went 1-8 (.125). Add Lewis to that as a potential second baseman and it goes to 1-12 (.083). Gotta find a remedy there. Grace didn't strike me as having a particular strong arm, and neither does Schultz. Curtis screwed the pooch several times at second as well. Golda did go 1-1 at the plate, but had the mental error that shouldn't happen to an elite level SS.

Carson Coleman - Just makes you want to throw your hands up and quit. Kid has so much potential and good stuff and can look dominant and then just flat out stinks at other times. That played out in his one appearance. A couple walks, a couple hits, a couple strikeouts. Gave up 4 runs total, 2 of them his own.

Daniel Harper - Remember his freshman year? Ahh... good times. Wish we had that Daniel Harper again.

The Ugly:

Just overall, the numbers are super ugly. 7.13 ERA while walking 16 batters, giving up 9 extra base hits, including 5 doubles. 25 hits in 24 innings with 22 runs, 19 earned. Just bad bad numbers. They get worse... on the flip side we hit just .194 as a team and struck out 25 times (about 26 percent of our at bats). Just 5 extra base hits the entire weekend and just 7 walks. I think these will improve, and I hope they are first weekend struggles and not indicative of how we will play in mid-March and beyond.

Dillon Marsh's second inning - Guy was cruising. Had a couple strikeouts and had two outs in that inning. Then it just fell apart. He gave up the couple of walks and it went to hell for him. Battled back and pitched a few more innings, but that loss of focus really hurt. Otherwise, I liked what I saw.

Jimmy Ramsey's first inning - Ramsey pitched pretty well. Not Friday starter well, but pretty well. His first inning was a travesty though. One error (should have been two) was compounded by some walks and it put UK in an early hole. He finished with a 2.25 ERA for the game, and it should have been lower. This isn't as much on him as it is our defense.

Great analysis. I thought Hill and Hazelwood were really bright spots. Not sure why Ming sat Hill down for a pinchhitter. Rhodes looks to be a hitter but man he cost us a few runs defensively.

I was hoping that the first game could be a bit of jitters for a few guys but it continued the whole series.

Just bad baseball. If things continue like this past weekend its going to be worse than last year.

Hopefully the next 3 weeks against "lower" programs can get us some confidence going into conference play.

26 walks in 24 innings?? Is that right? If so that is just . . . . . [poop]

It appears that Hill is going to sit anytime that he might face a left-handed pitcher, especially later in games or if the opponent starts a lefty. Until he proves to the coaches that he can hit them he will continue to go out. Seems pretty silly to me unless Anu or Lewis step up as a pinch hitter. Plenty of people this weekend failed to hit all hitters, so taking out Hill because he might have a drop against lefties just doesn't seem like a good strategy to me.

I also meant to add that the coaching of the team was bad/ugly. Not sure where it goes, but it is one of them. Taking out Cam Hill in both the first games, then having Lewis hit multiple times and stay in to play left field. I don't think they had the team mentally ready to compete against TCU. Not really shaking up the batting order in game two and finally doing it in game three, but not really all that much.

Time to start talking replacements? This is going to be a Joker like ending. Seems like a nice guy, to think that we were afraid Mississippi State would steal is is now laughable looking back!

I don't think we have to even talk about it... throw a bank vault at Roger Williams at UL and make him turn it down. If he does, then throw another bank vault at Erik Bakich of Michigan.

I think Mingione can be a nice guy, but I don't think he has the right tools and personality to be a head coach.

Would Brad Bohannon come back to UK?

He was an excellent recruiter. I would think we would pay him more than Alabama.

Would Brad Bohannon come back to UK?

He was an excellent recruiter. I would think we would pay him more than Alabama.

He probably would, but that, IMO, would be a disappointing hire for UK. Bohannon is in his third year in Alabama and has yet to get over 30 wins and has won just 7 and 8 SEC games each year. Alabama was a dumpster fire before him and he might turn it around, but handing the reins over to him at this point would be a massive risk, IMO.

Would rather have the UL pitching coach. He has to be the best pitching coach in the country and he is probably a good 70 percent of why they are as successful as they are. I'd throw everything at him. Not only would it help UK, but it would hurt UL... so 2 for 1. After that, go after Michigan's head coach. Michigan has a solid baseball history, but coaching that far north is difficult and their coach got them to the CWS final game a year ago where they almost won it all.

Matt Bragga would also be on the list. The former UK player coached Tennessee Tech a few years ago. They had the best offense in the country and played in a Super Regional and were one game away from the CWS in 2018. He was there quite a while before exploding to success, so that causes some concern, but I wouldn't be mad at the hire. He had 5 40 win seasons in 15 years.

Andy Green, former UK player, is currently a bench coach for the Cubs. He managed the Padres from 16-19, but was not overly successful. Not sure that you can blame that on him given it was the Padres. Still, I have to imagine that a trip back to Lexington might be tempting for him, so he would be a good name to toss into the hat as a possibility. Still a fairly young coach.

Agree with your list, Green would be an interesting hire, but is his heart really in college baseball?

Hazelwood was definitely a bright spot yesterday. I know this feels like last year, but hopefully this, with benefit of hindsight down the road, turns into one of those bridge years where guys coalesce and we see dividends next year.

Even if we had, or eventually do, visibly improve, the SEC is as filthy as I can recollect this year. We werent primed to make any big leaps this year regardless IMO. But for Pete's sake, lets at least see some competent ball out there. The defense is inexcusable in my book. 3 games in or not. Get. It. Fixed. The bats will come around I believe. Pitching thus far is more or less in line with what my expectations were.

I will give the hitting and pitching a pass due to being an season opening series at a decent Big XII team. But what is inexcusable is the pitiful fielding. Fielding and throwing the dang baseball should never be bad. And it should never take a day off as well. The bad defense is what really irks me to no end!!

Give Williams a piece of paper and tell him to write a # it would take to make the move.

So, here is the scary thing... this is not a young team. Ramsey, Hazelwood, Hill, Daniel, Collett, Anu, Curtis, Coleman, Harper, Holden, Golda, Jordan, Lockhart, Lewis, and Shelby are all guys that can leave after this year or will graduate. That is a whole lot of guys starting, or contributing that could head out. So, this really should be the year we see returns instead of steps back. Next year might be more steps back than even this year with all we could lose.

I really wonder where the train fell off the rails. It’s not like UK doesn’t have talent. Is it purely coaching? Is it just bad luck?

At least part of it is a lack of development. Think about his time here... how many guys outside of the major jump in output in his first year really improved a whole lot?

I think Luke Heyer and maybe Cottam. Outside of that, there aren't many that stand out as having taken big strides forward. Worse in the pitching staff than anywhere.

It starts with pitching as well... we have just not gotten the elite pitchers needed to win at a high level. Look at the UL/Ole Miss game. On Friday, both teams featured pitchers who likely go in the first round this year or next. Meanwhile, UK featured Ramsey who is likely a very very late pick. Across the SEC you will see a wealth of pitching, with the best teams having an ace and then clear aspiring aces. UK has none of that.

Michigan's Bakich would be my first call. He has had experience in the SEC as one of Tim Corbin's assistants at Vandy.

Brian Green would also be on my short list. He was one of Henderson's assistants and did a good job as the head coach at New Mexico State. He is now in his first season at Washington State.

I think Minges teams, outside of his first year, has a huge problem with leadership among the players. I really don’t see that one guy taking the reins and push his teammates. But I’ll agree that pitching is severely lacking at UK.

As some of you know, I am a supporter/ friend of Coach Bo. We struck up a friendship through mutual friends while he was an assistant at UK. He trusted me enough that he asked me to do some "unofficial" scouting of some local players in the Knoxville area when I lived there. Long story short, he is an amazing coach/guy. He sent hand written recruiting notes for a month to get Hjelle and Cottam. It wasn't Hendo who got them to UK. I would LOVE to have him back at UK.....however he is building something at Bama and not sure if he would be all that interested in another rebuild. Bama certainly won't finish last. We have at least 1 thing going for us.....his wife was at UK as a staff support worker when they met. With all that being said, Coach Barnhart has to pull the plug if this season goes the way many expect.

That certainly gives me more inspiration about Coach Bo coming back. Would be more comfortable seeing him have a strong year before UK steals him back, but I wouldn't be mad at the hire. He knows the difficulty of getting recruits to come to UK and did it when we were in the Cliff, so I am sure he would relish getting them to play in KPP.

We definitely are not getting the talent from previous years or anywhere close to Vandy or Louisville.

Thats one of the reasons I brought up Coach Bo. He could recruit.
