The death of Dick Enberg, got me thinking. Who's your Mount Rushmore of sports announcers?

John Facenda
Keith Jackson
Dick Enberg
Howard Cosell
Marty Brennaman
Dick Vitale ( IMO, he gives me a reason to pay attention to a bball game)
Dave Johnson (horse racing)
Don Meredith
Jack Buck
Cawood

1. Cawood- "Glory Road"
2. Keith Jackson- "Whoa Nelly!
3. Dick Engberg- "Oh My!"
4. Al Michaels- "Do you believe in miracles? Yes!"
5. Tom Leach - "Book it!" " And the championship trophy's coming home to Kentucky"
6. Vin Scully "Statistics are used much like a drunk uses a lamppost: for support, not illumination"
7. Harry Carey, "Let me hear you now..."
8. Jack Buck, " I don't believe what I just saw"
9. Milo Hamilton "There's a new home run King, and it's Henry Aaron".
10. Marty Brennaman "And this one belongs to the Reds"

Honorable mention. John Ward " The score: Oh, I can't even keep up with it any more." UT vs. UK 1993SEC tourney, 101-40.

That's just the way it is
The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat
Do you believe in miracles? . . . YES!
Cubs Win! Cubs Win! Cubs Win!

Cawood is the G.O.A.T Scully was great but IMO nobody touches Cawood.

1. Cawood
2. Scully
3. Marty B
4. Michaels,Enberg, Jackson, Summerall, Madden among several others.
But the top 3 are etched in stone for me.

I like Eli Gold, too. He's done mostly NASCAR and Alabama football for a really long time.

I can't believe that Kenny Rice and Bob Domini didn't make anyone's list.

Vin Scully the best ever. Just a natural at it and could paint a picture for you. He also knew when to shut up so you could take in the excitement going on inside the stadium..

How could we forget
That was the guy that got run out of town for being a Dodgers' fan during the '70's. Not a smart move considering that the Reds were in the middle of their run. Someone stuck a potato up his tailpipe and it blew his engineer. Probably had the most irritating voice of any announcer with the exception of Dick Vitale.

He used to talk about Jimmy Wynn the toy cannon. I have a long story to tell you about Crow.

Harry Carray ...........in the bottom of the fifth.. Sun afternoon double header:flushed:

Cawood and Gowdy

Lots of greats out there. Baseball has some of the best. Jon Miller is one. There are so many.

Keith Jackson. best college football. Vin Scully. best baseball. Cawood Ledford. best college basketball. Al Michaels. best all around. ( personal shoutout to Charlie Jones as a voice of the AFL)

I wondered how far I would have to go to see Harry make someone's list.

1. Cawood
2. Marty Brennaman
3. Harry Caray
4. Al Michaels

There are many others that are great, but that's my top four.

Dad was a huge Cubs and Carray fan. He taped games all the time and would replay to hear Carray call the games. One of those things that you grow up with and don’t forget.

I was never a Cubs fan, but I loved baseball. We only had 13 channels when I was young and one of them was WGN out of Chicago. So, of course they played all of the Cubs games. On a rainy summer day, while school was out, my brother and I would tune into the Cubs games in the afternoon, and there was Harry Caray.

Pretty confident that’s how he ended up being a Cubs fan. We only had 8 channels and WGN was one of them. I later became a Cubs fan and passéd the tradition along to my son.

The company I work for is headquartered out of Chicago. The 3 of us have made a few games when I’ve been required to travel in season. Dad couldn’t make a trip like this on his own-wouldn’t be able to get through traffic. Happy to be able to share moments like this with and my son.

3. Pro Football - Summerall
4. College Football - Keith Jackson
5. Baseball - Vin Scully
6. Horse Racing - Tom Durkin
7. Golf - Henry Longhurst
8. General Sports - Curt Gowdy.

I'll add John McEnroe to the list. Probably a better broadcaster than he was a player, and that's saying something.

The WORST ever is Phil Simms. He's the dumbest broadcaster I've ever seen.

Mine personally would be different from the “all-time greats”. I understand why they are where they are but I have no emotional connection to them. I wasn’t alive for Caewood, never listened to Scully, Harry Carey was amusing and certainly a classic. But to me, as far as announcers, there’s Marty Brennaman at the top and then all the rest. Marty is the freakin man.

Growing up in Florida, cable and satellite weren't available, so I used to sit in the car, in the dark, listening to Cawood call the basketball games. That's how good he was.

1) Cawood Ledford. Men cried when he retired.
2) Howard Cossell So good he is still parodied.
3) John Madden Madden Football. Need I say more?
4) Keith Jackson. Another so good he is used for the parody.

Today, Sir Charles is my favorite announcer. He pulls no punches and is funny as all get out.

Cawood Ledford, "that's left to right on your radio dial"
Vin Scully
Keith Jackson- "Whoa Nellie"
Mel Allen- "How about that"
Charlie Jones
Dick Enberg- "Oh my"
Marty Brennaman-"This one belongs to the Reds"

I grew up watching Cubs baseball as well, but I'm a little older and I loved listening to Jack Brickhouse. Always loved listening to Caywood and going to UK road football games over the years, you would always catch a SEC game on the radio on the way home. That's where I discovered John Ward, Larry Munson and Eli Gold. Those three are very good as well. Pro football in my growing up days consisted of listening to Curt Gowdy and Charlie Jones.
