The College Basketball Coach You Have the Least Respect for

Lots of bad guys. Boeheim probably tops my list among current coaches.

The fact that his long time assistant was caught up in a pedofilia scandal and nothing ever really happened.

The way he acted like the victim when the NCAA hit him with sanctions.

The way he threw Cal under the bus about the whole unfair advantage deal with Team USA.

The fact that despite all of this garbage, he has (as far as I know) remained a part of USA basketball, and gets a free pass from the media.

I get the feeling that he's a really bad guy.

There are several I detest:

The biggest cheat: John Wooden
The biggest racists: John Thompson, John Chaney & Nolan Richardson
Scumbags in general: Stallings, Boeheim, Calhoun
Better than everyone else: Roy Williams, Bo Ryan
slimy: Crean

1. Knight
2. Calhoun
3. Boeheim
4. Roy Williams
5. Gillispie
6. Stallings
7. Chaney
8. Thompson
9. Crean
10. Sutton

Easy one for me. The phony in Durham. Amazing how his ethics changed when Cal started owning college basketball. He is the biggest hypocrite going and it ain't even close.

And when did UK stop catching all the flak from the media for recruiting these young talents? When Duke started doing it too.

But ssshhhhhh........it's a conspiracy. Keep it to yourself.

It just boggles my mind when people put BCG above Sutton. What Sutton did here was 10x worse that anything BCG came close to doing. On top of that, he conspires with the AD at University of San Francisco to make their coach take a leave of absense so he can come in and get his 800th win. What a POS.

Northeast media darling.

But of course, if that were UK we would totally be treated the same.

If Clyde would have been given 1 more year and longer rope, I don't know what this program would have been. That hire should have been enough to fire MB immediately. If it weren't for Pratt and a few others, it wouldn't have even been corrected. I still LOL at people who think MB ever wanted Cal. When you've got to selerate your AD from the basketball side of things, it's clear.

All-time? Bobby Knight
Current? Coach K.........guy has worked the refs like no other. I have never rooted for his team in any game.
Pitino post-UK a close 2nd...

I'm going go with Mike Anderson, I can't stand the guy. He's a guy who acts all smug and mighty when he has hardly done anything of worth in his coaching career, and that really shows in his teams. He's one of those guys who lives to beat UK, and then tries to downplay our accomplishments. If he lost every game of the season, but beat UK he'd probably still be proud of himself.

I remember pounding them last year and then Cal calling off the dogs and allowing Ark to get some garbage points, then Anderson using the "old we ran out of time" excuse afterwards. God, I wanted to blow those clowns out by 50.

Even if BCG was here for one more year, any record he had would have paled in comparison to what Sutton left. If Sutton would have been here the BCG years, no way in hell would a coach like Cal have come here. People must have selective memory in just how bad things were when Sutton left.

Yep, I totally agree about Anderson. Another Nolan Richardson when it comes to UK. Doesn't know anything except thug ball.

I don't think coach Self was trying to be disrespectful to Kentucky with the "ran out of time" comment. He is not usually disrespectful to opposing coaches/teams other than Scott Drew (who totally has it coming IMHO)

I think he was speaking to his players and the fans.

I'm a complete KU homer and can freely admit that if that game went another hour, week, or was still being played, Kentucky would be ahead and win.

That was a special team. No harm in recognizing that. Is what it is man. (Or was what it was).

Whiners still make excuses, you can like Calipari or hate him, but he doesn't make excuses when he loses.

current - Mike Anderson and Jim Boeheim
past - Bob Knight, Jim Calhoun, Nolan Richardson
i think Bob Knight, Jim Calhoun are the two biggest POS to ever coach the game

Yeah, but I don't blame Sutton for that. He hadn't been in any trouble at Arkansas. He came to Lexington thinking he could run the program, but the boosters said "Just coach the team and we'll have the state troopers pick your drunk ass up and take you home. Tell us what kids you want and we'll take it from there."

in no real order......Eddie Sutton, he dam near got the death penalty for uk. John Thompson openly admitted he was bias and would give a black kid a scholarship before any white kid, and nobody calls him out but calls rupp out every year. and roy Williams, he is a liar and cheat. also throw in john wooden as now everyone knows how he got almost all his wins.

Anyone else stunned by Jimmy Dykes decision to coach chickball?
Jimmy jet and Jimmy end zone cam crashed in Arkansas.

too disfigured by plane crash to be on espn ; but espnsec network show his games after midnite only.pg13 warning b4 games however.

I have a hard time respecting Bob Huggins.

From everything I ever heard about the Cincy basketball program when he was there, all your worst assumptions were pretty much true.

Hey, if you're a coach who wants to recruit high-risk kids, I really don't have a problem with that. Cal certainly did his share of it prior to UK. It's another thing entirely to recruit those kind of kids and then basically let them run amok, with no accountability (off-court) whatsoever, while you as the coach are, from all indications, off in a bar getting hammered. Too many of those kids end up with no education, and absolutely nothing to fall back on if pro ball doesn't work out. Almost every high-profile program has problems like that, but I think it's far worse with someone like Huggins.

And along those same lines, Dana Altman hasn't exactly covered himself in glory at Oregon. He's found a recruiting niche taking other people's rejects and misfits, but like with Huggins, there seems to be no accountability whatsoever.

I won't answer because this question was clearly not intended for visitors. But I DO have answers. I'm glad not many mention Self.

I don't like Bruce Pearl. I know I'm kinda in the minority there. I never liked Calhoun or Olson. Don't like Anderson. I didn't ever really get a chance to see Dean Smith work, but I probably would not have liked him because of the four corners offense.

Self due to his shady recruiting, and piss poor hair plugs. Not to mention his obsession with Calipari and emulating him....well trying to emulate.

I'm not comparing the two honestly. I was 4 when Sutton left but I have been schooled on it by my father of course. Billy Gillispie was one year from absolute and total disaster. Players and their families were ready to transfer and go public about what was going on. He was a total alcoholic, and was even drinking on road games as I personally whitnessed. He was tearing down the image of UK extremely fast. Could it have gotten as bad as Sutton? At the rate he was going, possibly. Sutton was a cheater, Gilispie was a bomb, and because the plug was pulled so fast on Gillispie doesn't change that we were headed for a cliff.

It took me a long time to get back on this board after it took up the Gillispie cause and literally blacklisted anyone challenging what was going on. It was a disgusting time for this board. Some of the usual posters were full Gillispie supporters, right until the end, and made it hell to post the truth. They know who they are.

Knight and then K. Birds of a feather...

K gets help from officials, the NCAA, the media and the selection committee. I can't even imagine Kentucky's level of dominance if we got the dook treatment.

Boeheim is a smug worm but he's not successful enough to consider. Honestly not worthy of my disrespect.

Oliver Purnell when he was at Clemson, I took his pic at the Final Four in Detroit with a young Clemson fan and he was really unfriendly with him....

Roy. Between being a part of the biggest scandal in NCAA history as well as equating losing basketball games with what happened in Haiti (a catastrophe), he's the easy and most obvious choice. But since Larry Brown hasn't been mentioned, I do need to give him an dishonorable mention. He'd gotten in hot water at UCLA and Kansas; and is now facing serious allegations at SMU. Not too surprising though considering he learned from the biggest cheater there was in Dean Smith.

I agree with you about Pearl. He is the worst kind of cheese eater. After he lost a recruiting battle for a kid, Pearl tried to set the kid up by secretly recording a telephone call in which he asked the kid leading questions. Then he turned the tape over to the NCAA. That is some unethical snitch behavior. Irony that Pearl was the one later busted for recruiting violations.

Ummm. The NIT year he called his players "uncoachable". Come on man. I get the Blue glasses, but he said it. Total excuse.

zero accountability in the KU program. the fan base is building statues of a man who brings conference titles for a decaying conference.

self is as artificial as it gets.

I will always revere Rick Pitino for what he did for this program in the '90's' but he made an IMMENSE mistake by leaving Kentucky. If Rick had stayed at Kentucky, he'd be right up there with Coach K in the converstion as GOAT, and we would have most surely overtaken UCLA in number of championships. And he knows it, and I guarantee you it haunts him.

Instead, his overriding image is that of a bitter old man, who resents Calipari for thriving at his former stomping grounds, and who unwisely banged some mentally unstable slag at Porcini's several years ago.
