North Carolina coach Hubert Davis has signed a two-year extension running through the 2029-30 season, and hired basketball agent Jim Tanner as the men’s basketball program’s executive director and general manager.

The latest deal includes a raise and pays Davis an average of $3.2 million in base salary and supplemental pay, up from about $2 million on the previous deal reached in July 2022 that ran through the 2027-28 season.
All right! Dang they don’t pay him squat compared to what a UNC coach usually makes.

I'm reading through his contract now and it looks like if he's fired without cause, he's owed the full amount left on their contract, but they also have some really good language in it:

Coach is required to mitigate the university's payment obligations by making best efforts as soon as practical to secure a comparable position....Coach's lack of diligence in seeking a comparable position, or coach's refusal of a reasonable offer of comparable position, shall void the university's payment obligations.

Genius!
Is the diligence spelled out? Like he has to seek another coaching job or interview so many times a year? Maybe try and get a studio or assistant job?

NC just paid for an additional 2 years of irrelevance. That’s good money paid.

It’s interesting because I would assume if he gets fired from UNC he would go back to TV. He didn’t try to break into the coaching ranks until he had the chance to take over in Chapel Hill, that doesn’t seem like someone who is dead set on being a coach even if it means dropping down a level.

It’s strange that he didn’t have much coaching experience until he worked for Roy a few years and then took over. You would have thought they learned better after Matt Doherty.

There was some talk of Mark Pope hiring a “general manager“ when he was building his staff. As far as I know no one has that title, but I think Fox is essentially the GM? He’s definitely on the sidelines coaching too, I wonder if Pope will stick with that hybrid role or if he’ll ever want a dedicated GM.

Keeping Hubert looks to me like it'll be good enough to keep some decent recruits coming to UNC***, but they won't win enough with what Hubert will do for them to keep them remotely satisfied.

Wait till' the natives come with pitchforks and torches after another couple seasons like this one....

UNC is one of those programs that likes to stay in the family, whether that be someone that was an assistant in the past or played there:

Dean Smith - assistant
Bill Guthridge - assstant
Matt Doherty - played there
Roy Williams - assistant/played there
Hubert Davis - assistant/played there

So, since 1961, every coach was either an assistant, player, or both prior to coaching at UNC. I think UNC is, by far, the program that wants to keep it in the family the most.

When I first saw this. I said this has got to be an April fools joke, but then I realized that it's not April 1st. So the only thing that I can figure is that they're desperate to hold on to Caleb Wilson.
