North Carolina coach Hubert Davis has signed a two-year extension running through the 2029-30 season, and hired basketball agent Jim Tanner as the men’s basketball program’s executive director and general manager.

The latest deal includes a raise and pays Davis an average of $3.2 million in base salary and supplemental pay, up from about $2 million on the previous deal reached in July 2022 that ran through the 2027-28 season.

Hubert has his issues but he has already made a Final Four and earned a #1 seed in the past 4 years. On par or better than other blue bloods. Definitely better than them stealing someone like Golden or Oats tho.

It won't prevent them from dumping him if they have another bad season. It's just money. After all, schools like UNC now pay their players (collectively) more than their coaches.

As we've learned the most important part of the contract is the buyout. What would they owe him if he's fired? It says base salary $3.2m. Is that his total pay? That seems remarkably low for a top program, I guess you get what you pay for

A year ago he was 53rd highest college bball coach.

I'm reading through his contract now and it looks like if he's fired without cause, he's owed the full amount left on their contract, but they also have some really good language in it:

Coach is required to mitigate the university's payment obligations by making best efforts as soon as practical to secure a comparable position....Coach's lack of diligence in seeking a comparable position, or coach's refusal of a reasonable offer of comparable position, shall void the university's payment obligations.

Genius!
