Sumrall article

I think he's the obvious, most realistic, choice that we could get. But we saw Neal Brown was highly successful at Troy too, even beat LSU on the road, and he's really struggled at the P5 level.

Agreed....but hes a guy I am rooting for and if UK is a future destination...all the better.

My main issue with Neal Brown was he was all throwing it around offense, not much of a D.....that wasn't going to work at P5 and he's faltering as he's a one trick pony....if he can't outscore you....he's cooked.

I don't have the stats pulled up and I don't watch much WVU football but it doesn't seem like his offenses are setting the world on fire either, especially in a league where defense is optional.

I like to think you have to play some defense to win but UT played very little and was an upset loss from the playoffs. OSU wasn't great defensively and were a spanked FG from playing for a championship. Have to be able to play both sides of the ball. Muschamp is a great defensive coach, but is that bad on the offensive side and led to failures at 2 different schools. Clearly Sumrall understands he has to have some offense because of the success he is having. The question is when he meets up with better coaching he will be facing week after week in P5 or whatever it will be called, will he still excell.

I don't have a good answer to tennessee to be honest.....I am very impressed with their offense and SEC teams have not been able to hold it down better yet. I'll be honest....UT isn't really good defensively but I think they are at least average don't you think?

Some of their defense stats have to be explained that their offense scores so fast it puts them right back on the field. And their defense is good as take a ways which is key. I don't think Heupel is a terrible defensive coach but not a savant on that side for sure.

How could he be responsible for the DF while at UK? He was OC, for heaven's sake!

Well…when you move to head coach….your responsibility is all aspects of program. He’s a glorified offensive coordinator as head coach now….he can’t get his defensive side of ball is poor and his responsibility as well

No doubt about it his offense has been successful. But his defense is suspect, in a losing effort Bama put 50+ on them, Carolina put alot on them, we threw 1 pass against them in 2nd half so Kirbybhad more to do with stopping UGA than UT did.

His offense is effective, but simple, uses huge spreads and tries to snap ball while defense is still lining up. Get those fast guys running by DBs who are still getting signals while trying to get in position

Sumrall was an easy player to root for during his career here. When Stoops time is up here, whenever that may be, I'd love to have him come back and be our HC.
Interesting. I imagine a lot of UK fans feel similarly. It is difficult not to have positive impressions of Coach Sumrall. Everything he does is done well, and he is a teacher and developer of young men. IMO Sumrall is headed for more success in the coaching business.

On the practical side of this, Coach Stoops is 55 years old and will be 56 next month. He is under contract at UK through the 2030 season. UK's administration has shown a willingness to give Stoops the resources he needs to be successful.

Although one can still find the occasional Stoops critic and out of touch Stoops hater here on this board, Stoops is popular in general with the greater fan base and is now the winningest coach in UK football history. Stoops has posted a couple of 10 win seasons and could be headed for another this year if Devin Leary is for real. UK football has not experienced this level of success since the 1970s, and that story ended badly whereas this version is looking good. Stoops' record, popularity, and contract status suggest he can probably retire at UK if he wants. IMO, there are very few jobs that would lure Stoops away. OH St might be one, but there would be a lot of formidable candidates if Ryan Day left there for some reason. Day is 44, more than a decade younger than Stoops.

So, to look at it one way, Sumrall may have another decade, give or take, to establish his coaching career and see if his career timeline is consistent with UK's timeline. Sumrall is 40 and will be 41 next month. If Sumrall is a legitimate Power 5 coach, and I don't doubt for one moment that he will be, he might be ensconced in another Power 5 program by the time Stoops leaves UK. But all of this is theoretical.

If we can get Tennessee to punt four times this year I’ll be over the moon.
Really all we need to figure out is one play. Lol. The SAME PLAY scored three TDs on us. Two players out wide. Side by side. One runs a deep curl. One runs a fly. Our corners playing zone turned 2 guys over to the safety. TD all three times. If both guys go that deep one DB has got to cover the length of the route. I’m not sure coaching wise how you communicate that to players playing zone. Also a pass rush kinda hurts this as that is a LONG developing play. UTs Oline was excellent last year.

Stoops won't be leaving or retiring soon. After 10 yrs he has got what he has always been lacking:
1) great OC who he trusts completely
2)and in 2024 he gets a highly ranked and offered HS QB

Sumrall will be coaching at a High D 1 school in next 2 years.
I don't know about the validity of your two year prediction, but I believe Sumrall is a future Power 5 HC. Whether he will retire in his first Power 5 HC job remains to be seen and is entirely conjecture. Some Power 5 jobs are stepping stones while others are more desirable.
