Because he's not! He's an excellent recruiter who is a "C" bench coach at best. He's stubborn, won't make obvious moves that need to be made and the moves he does make a lot of times hurt more than help.

We will have to have a totally stacked roster to get 9 and even that doesn't give us an overwhelming chance at it.

And to the smartasses, no I don't want him gone because there's nobody else available that's a better option. But he could be so much better than he is but refuses to be out of pride/stubbornness.

Huh. Stacked roster?

If you talking about last year we win 38 straight and he coached us through a lot of close games.

OP, you've averaged about 1 post/week now since the season began. Please don't tell me you're going to up your averages now that UK is struggling. That's just weak.

Spare those of us who have actually ridden this one out with the team all season.

Dear god... Yes. He's one of the 2 or 3 best in college basketball.

No other team in college deals with the type of road atmospheres we do though. 81 free throws in the last 2 games for our opponents. I doubt that has happened for any other team in college this season.

And it's not because our guys foul that much. Look at some of the stuff that was called a foul on our guys tonight. Briscoe's 4th, Ulis guarding the post, Willis arms straight up. It's every road game because college officials are old and can't check their emotions in that those of atmosphere.

That stuff isn't Cal's fault unless you fault him for making us THE SHOW in college basketball even when we're not that good.

OP is still apparently basing his assessments on pre-season rankings.
i guess. He still thinks Newman would make a difference when our backcourt scored 51 and that's with briscoe in foul trouble.

What "obvious" moves would you make? Name 3. Please be specific.

Yes I do. Now please go away.

I just wish he was not so stubborn about playing Zone sometimes.

There's just not a whole lot a coach can do about inconsistent post play. What's missing are the defensive stoppers we had last year underneath. We don't have that and for that reason we're getting killed by FT's. UT stayed in the game the first half at the line and it eventually beat us.

Tonight was another horrible loss, and like anybody Cal has strengths and weaknesses as a coach.

There is literally nobody in the country I would rather have though.

Period.
This is a good post.

Cal allows his teams way too much rope. That's the real issue. After he watches a lead disappear he just screams and shouts, instead of calling a simple timeout to settle the team down.

That's the biggest issue he's got right now. Is that even debatable?

This is a big problem. I can't stand to see him act like a madman. He is cool and collective when out recruiting but acts like a lunatic when coaching.

No shit! Considering he is the youngest of the elites.
People forget that.
He IS seriously stubborn, don't even try to deny that!!!

He wasn't tonight, he was against Kansas, Louisville and Duke.

Lee and Skal are killing us, they give us absolutely nothing this year.

Our play against KU was more about the way they played us defensively in the first and less about a great coaching strategy by Cal and tonight's poor showing proved it. Unlike Cal, Self made the necessary second half defensive adjustments and his team took care of business. Maybe if Cal yelled less during the games, it would free him up to think about helpful adjustments to help his team win. It should be obvious to all that Cal must have considerably more talent than his opposition to win and as tonight showed, a victory still isn't a certainty.

He's an A+ recruiter, but a B x and I'd coach. I wouldn't take anyone over him though but I can see your frustration in his stubbornness. It gets extremely bad at times. But I will reiterate, I would take him over anyone else in the country as a recruiter/coach combo.

That's another thing. Cal acts like he's above zone when clearly his recruiting 1/3rd of the time calls for it. Stop acting like you've got an all defensive team and taking pride that "I will never play zone". It makes him look like an asshat sometimes.

This game could have been avoided. Call a timeouts when a 21 point lead shrinks to 14, mix in a few defenses besides man, and we win. I would bet the house on it.
