State of 2023 Recruiting

Rembrandt,
In your opinion, does this represent a "net" loss vis-a-vis Rogers? Or is this an addition by subtraction scenario? Also, age-old inquiry, what about Gilbert and Bell? Haven't heard much of either since early signing date and the Brohm migration...
Thanks again for all of your hard work...

We know Jamarion Wilcox likes UK. Wiltfong has a CB pick for UK. Wilcox recently cancelled a visit to Auburn. It looks like Clemson has filled their RB scholarships. Wilcox apparently plans to make an announcement by next weekend. I am guessing Wilcox might be waiting for Liam Coen to announce that he has taken the UK OC job. Other possibilities could be that Wilcox hesitated when Ray Davis transferred to UK, or that something may have happened when Jay Boulware recently visited him. Since Wilcox evidently wanted to enroll on January, there could be a problem with the transcript. You can never be completely confident when it comes to recruiting, but UK still appears to be the team to beat for Wilcox.

Losing Rogers is a problem. Deone Walker is coming back, and I think Josaih Hayes is a better player than he has had an opportunity to show. But Rogers was a starter for a reason. This isn't insurmountable, but it isn't good.

Kendrick Gilbert is committed to Purdue, although rumors suggest he is looking at UL. I would be surprised if he ends up at UK. But since he visited Lexington during the fall, it isn't impossible. Stranger things have happened.

Demitrius Bell is still uncommitted. He holds at least 9 SEC offers, some of which are presumably no longer committable. I assume he will make an announcement in February. It is possible that Devin Leary's transfer and the Coen hire could influence his decision, but we don't know that. He visited UK on Oct. 7, and we still have a couple of open scholarships, so we probably have a chance.

Wilcox and his teammates delayed their announcement last Friday because their coach and some family couldn't be there. He is announcing with his teammates this coming Friday at 7pm. Everyone assumed he was gonna announce in Dec but he never set any type of time back then. It is different but he and supposedly a few teammates going to different schools are all announcing then

Thanks. Wilcox would fill an important role in our offense. He is faster than Davis or McClain, but he is also strong for his size. I still like UK's chances to sign him. But you can never be sure until they actually sign and enroll.

Last I heard, Rogers is making visits and hasn't committed anywhere. But he isn't coming back. At the time of my post to which you are responding, we didn't know Rogers would leave. In fact, the prevailing wisdom at the time was that Anwar Stewart had talked him out of leaving.

I think Josaih Hayes is a better player than he has had the opportunity to show so far. However, given what is known now, Stoops probably needs another interior defensive lineman for the rotation. Quentel Jones was supposed to be that guy, but unfortunately didn't make it to campus. There are a number of interesting interior defensive linemen in the portal, but of course all of them will have multiple options.

Stoops can move Deone Walker inside to NT, and I think that will be an interesting decision because Walker has been very good at his current position. A starting DL of Walker, Oxendine, and Rybka (or Saunders) would get the job done. But some of the younger players like Anaele, Dinkins, and possibly Henry-Young need to step up and play more quality snaps as depth pieces.
Well thanks for not beating me up over the Rogers deal . That info came from Anthony White and Coach Stew told him . When stuff like this happens , makes me not want to post things I “hear” .

They can't go back to a world of just Feb signing day. Only benefits the elite. Gives them time to poach from lesser schools when they get late nos. Plus nowadays 25-50% of a hs recruiting class will enroll in Dec anyway!

Do away with Dec, put it in August if a change must happen. But give kids an escape plan if the head coach or main assistant contact is fired later on.

Do you know if Rogers just wanted to play in a different scheme, or wanted money and didn't think he could get it here for some reason? I know he was overshadowed by the play of others like D1, but have you heard anything you can share right now?

I know the coaches are stressed with Dec as the early signing month, but when IS a good time? August is too early. Games are still being played til late November and through bowl season. I hate to see us lose the early period altogether, but the only good time is late Nov or early to mid Dec. January is obviously too late for recruits that want to enroll early.

One would think the NFL success of McCall/Bohanna would be enough to convince him he's where he needs to be. Guess he has rabbit in his blood.

Hate seeing that the commissioner wants to move the early signing back till after the bowl season. More time to lose people late.
Or just want Bama, LSU, UGA, etc...want. Sankey does not speak for all members of SEC.

I get the signing day is coinciding with massive amounts of kids hitting portal after season....so move signing day to before season end. And have a catchup signing period in February. But no...Sankey is pushing it all back so big dogs can grab kids late form smaller schools

That was the first thing I thought also. TX and OK coming in now this. The mountain keeps getting taller to overcome.

The article I read said Stoops wants it changed. He said it was too much

Eliminating early signing day is nonsense when typically 25%-50% of high school recruits will be mid year early enrollees. Push back to just 1 Feb signing day & kids will be pressured more than ever to graduate early & be on campus asap.

Well he was originally going to enter the draft , coach Stew talked to him and showed him the difference in being picked in the 7th rd vs the 2nd or 3rd and that if he would dedicate himself , he could go that high . The staff was blindsided by the portal decision.I’ve only heard speculation about why Rogers decided to enter it .

Thank you, sir!

Guessing it was tampering of some kind then. May never know

I did not mention you or question your opinion. We can never be certain what student athletes will do. I have no problem at all believing what you shared here at the time about Stewart believing he convinced Rogers to stay. But apparently Rogers changed his mind. Rogers came out of hs with a lot of headlines. Maybe Stewart convinced him that he has to improve for the draft, but he thinks he should do it somewhere else. Maybe he was not happy being overshadowed here by Deone Walker. Maybe he was disappointed (as we were) by our 2022 season. Maybe he wants to play in a 4-3 system. Maybe he doesn't like the food at UK. Whatever happened, it wasn't your fault or Stewart's fault. It will be interesting to see how Brad White adjusts to this, but this is obviously an opportunity for Josaih Hayes to step up. Hope he makes the most of it.

I don't personally have an opinion about this suggestion. But the basketball analogy occurs near the beginning of the season in November. FWIW. So moving the football signing date to August would deprive the kids of visiting to see the team play football games, but maybe it would not overburden the coaches as much. So perhaps an early signing period for a week, starting around July 31, and then a late signing period in January, after the bowls have been played?

Why not have signing day mid November? I mean for kids that have verballed in Summer and thru season on official visits....why hold them up?

Because they will presumably be busy all Dec doing game prep for the new 12 team CFB playoff?

People don't realize yet these playoff games al have to start the very next weekend after the conference championships. CFB & the networks do not want that sports playoffs/championship bleeding over into the NFL playoffs.

Some teams had bowl games the week of ESD. Not alot of difference.

To pull kids off of lesser teams as their top targets go elsewhere

Are you serious? I can't speak for Bama or LSU but the early signing period was the time UGA's recruiting has never been better, the last thing UGA's staff wants is for it to end.

True, why would GA want it to end? The GAs, Bamas, etc of the world are going to recruit well anyway. Still think it should be open ended, no "signing day" just sign at any time.

Why would Bama, UGA, LSU want to do away with early signing period?
The earlier you have to sign players, the less you know about them & thus are more likely to err. Net, leaves more room to even things out. The longer you wait, can better sort players out. That's why I'd like an August signing period.

When we have kids decommit....90% of the time it is to a percieved better program that decided to show them interest when their higher rated kids didn't verbal to them. So, to get rid of December signing period and go back to February...it allows the big boys time after bowls to see their roster needs and possibly go to lesser schools and say "Hey what about us".
