State of 2023 Recruiting

Not concerned at all and don't think that will come close to happening. Would like to sign Spencer if he is academically eligible. Good guard prospect, but let us not think he is a program changer or a series flipper. Do not underestimate Austin Ramsey or Grant Bingham.
It’s a ways away and not a certainty, it just reminds me of when Stoops started beating out UofL for recruits. Their fans were so used to winning the rivalry and none of them took it seriously. A few classes of that and then we were the ones with more talent. NIL has changed the game and they’re trying to use it to flip the rivalry back. If we’re not careful this class is the start of that. I’m just saying complacency is a killer.

Rosters numbers? Really? All I've read as an above interested recruiting follower for last 3 months is only about cornerbacks and wide recievers.

Again....a wide reciever

Just not interested in anybody over 180 lbs in this class apparently
Unless it's Spencer or Gilbert I wouldn't expect any linemen in the '23 class except transfers. They do have two OL transfers visiting this week and weekend. Looks like they lead for both. They have a big LB target in the '23 class coming in this weekend also. Asa Newsom from Iowa

As widely expected and already discussed, WR Ardell Banks from Massilllon, OH, has given a verbal commitment to UK. Banks holds offers from Pitt and UC but UK is his only SEC offer.

This commitment is immediately being panned by some of our fans, who have probably not actually seen Banks play. Obviously, our coaches have seen him play. As PT Barnum taught us, you can never please everyone. In Massillon, Banks has a reputation for being a physical blocker with good technique. As a senior, he has come on and become a very productive pass receiver. He is a tall, long athlete with good hands and decent speed for his size. He will require development, but he has the potential to help our offense. He wants to be a Wildcat, so let's give him a fair chance before passing judgment. Fair enough? Nobody besides our coaches expected very much from Josh Allen either.

OL isn't going to be fixed by the '23 HS recruits. They need an impact transfer and I think that's were they are focused
Do you know if we are after either of the two Alabama linemen and I dont mean Tanner Bowles or whatever his name is . Thanks.

George and Cohen haven't been mentioned as guys UK are in with. Bowles and Cox appear to be the top targets. I think Cohen is being mentioned with USC and Damien George is a Houston kid so I would expect him back somewhere in TX

It's amazing how idiotic some of our fanbase can be after what this staff has accomplished and how many of their "finds" have become hot commodities after the fact. Those fans just show over and over again how little they know about football and football prospects.

I'm sure there are some somewhere acting like that but the article I seen on HOB it seemed they were excited

Most people who dump on Stoops' recruits believe they are really dumping on Stoops himself. Then, when the recruits contribute and Stoops keep winning more games, they disappear and wait until something doesn't go as expected before they can reappear to take up their negative narrative again. These are unhappy people. Nothing will change them. Any reasonable person knows by now that Stoops recruits according to his staff's evaluations, not by star ratings. That's why most of Stoops' classes outperform their rankings, and it's how we got Josh Allen, Benny Snell, Chris Rodriguez, Carrington Valentine, D'Eryk Jackson, Kahlil Saunders, and Josh Kattus.

Get him to sign

Break his arms and forge his signage if you must
It is likely that Newsom will play for Ferentz at IA at the end of the day. I doubt the outcome of the MCB will decide this for him, but the bowl game will at least give him a chance to compare the teams directly for whatever that is worth. He just scheduled a visit to Lexington, which is very interesting. He is listed as an ATH, but my uneducated guess would be that Coach White would develop him as an edge LB at UK. I think that is why Stoops wants him, since the edge (in addition to being a good guitarist!) is a position of need for us right now.

Wonder why Rock_cat78 stopped posting here . He exclusively posts on HOB nowadays. Wonder if “the man” warned him about giving out too much information to the non-paying pee ons . lol

I bet that's exactly what happened.

RB prospect Jacquez Keys (Ironton, OH) decommitted from WI last night. Evidently he is not a big Luke Fickell fan.

Vince Marrow has been recruiting Keys for at least a year. There was a time last spring when some observers believed Keys would end up at UK. That may still happen. Coach Marrow visited Keys in Ironton yesterday. As we all know, UK needs to sign multiple RBs.

Along those same lines, UK RB Michael "Donut" Drennen has entered the transfer portal. Drennen was buried on UK's depth chart. Drennen had been a pet project for Coach Settle, who was fired recently. UK's RB depth chart for the bowl game is now down to Chris Rodriguez, Jutahn McClain, and LaVell Wright.

Keep an ear to the ground
There will be a lot of developments with the transfer portal and the 2023 recruiting class over the next 2 weeks. I have felt for months that this UK class will end up being better than people think. Stoops is not trying to recruit the DL much, and I think that has been misunderstood by some people. Our DB class is outstanding. Grant Godfrey is a beast, and Stoops is still recruiting LBs. I think it is interesting that RB prospect Jacquez Keys decommitted from WI last night after talking with Vince Marrow. We don't know who the next RB coach will be, but Marrow does. Maybe Keys likes the new coach more than he liked Settle.

Some of the roster needs are going to get filled through the portal. Largely overlooked so far, Stoops has been meeting with players and giving guidance to those who are buried on the depth chart. Our 2022 class buried a lot of other players. Ten Wildcats have already left and gone into the portal, and the only ones who might be missed are Young, Lewis, and Magwood. This process has opened up a lot of scholarships that can be filled through the portal. This will be a roster remake. After listening to Stoops yesterday, he knows exactly what needs to get done. There are already hundreds of players in the portal, so it is becoming a target rich environment.

@Rembrandt90 - Where are we currently on total scholarships COUNTING the committed players?

I'm assuming the outgoing transfers can be replaced with incoming transfers as long as we stay under 85? (At least that's how I remember it.)

It's looking like the new strategy is: 1) Recruit the best players you can recruit. 2) Do everything possible to retain your best players. 3) Replace outgoing transfers with better incoming transfers.

In most cases that will result in 30-32 new players a year. (I think most teams can count on 8-10 outbound transfers per year. Just saw where Ala had nine jump in portal yesterday and I haven't taken time to look at other top programs.

Bottom Line - Replacing outgoing transfers (most buried on depth chart) with contributing players in your 2 deep is a huge improvement to any roster. The only caveat is that most other teams are doing the same thing.

And Beckwith
.
Somehow, it seems Drennen wound up in Stoops doghouse. Even when he did well in the spring game, Stoops refused to talk well of him AT ALL. Even when asked directly. Any insight on that situation?
