Standing At The Game

I'm overweight, the guy beside is too plus he sits with his legs spread like a frog. If he was a hot coed I would probably not mind and would sit more. As it is I need the space that comes with standing. Sometimes I would rather keep standing than to sit then have to hop right back up as the people in front of me stand.
I don't eat and will only make one trip for concessions or bathroom.
So can I still be in your row and section?

Why do I always hear the crowd section at games referred to as the stands"?

Guess we should call it "the sits" in the Commonwealth because we're special.
Since you want to be petty, "stands" is short for grandstand. The definition is: A grandstand is a large and normally permanent structure for seating spectators.

I'm not against standing and cheering...just against someone doing it the whole game when no one else is.

I'm the guy who would stand DURING GAME PLAY mostly no matter who is standing or sitting around me. I'll sit and rest in between quarters and timeouts... want to sit? stay at home. If im in a crowd of sitting people i tend to look around and say loudly something to the effect of "why are we sitting? is this a library? stand up and make noise!!! this is what gives us a HOMEFIELD ADVANTAGE!"

I've done this several times.. tried to be a cheerleader of sorts.. i feel it is an obligation of mine as a fan to help my team have any advantage possible

Last season I attended an Arizona Wildcats football game (i live in tucson)... thinking the atmosphere would be rowdy since they were ranked and it was a conference game (against Colorado)... it it felt like a damn old folks home... my wife and I (UK fans at a UofA game) were cheering the loudest and hardest for Arizona... finally we got the crowd around us encouraged enough to follow, but it took some time and i heard some snide remarks in the process...

Hey slugger, I didn't say I don't stand, I do when the game calls for it. Try to understand what is being said. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

What purpose do you think it serves for those that stand the entire game?

There is this guy two rows in front of me that stands the entire game and blocks the view of the people behind him. They just roll their eyes. Of course, then that row has to stand to see and then my row can't see and so on and so on.

I can see standing and cheering on 3rd down on both sides of the ball, but this guy just stands and doesn't cheer much. Most of the time, he is the only one standing and looks all around to see if anyone else is. Only time he sits is when he's eating his nachos.

I think he's being rude and he's pissing a lot of folks off. I have bitten my tongue so far. Some people can't stand the whole game and it's not like it's really helping just because you stand the whole game.

This is the wrong forum to be coming on and lecturing fans (who pay hundreds and thousands of dollars) about when and when not to stand. My goodness. For a program that's basically begging for a better home field environment it seems like we'd be encouraging our fans to stand more often. Seriously. If you don't want to stand up or cheer just sit at home and watch the game. Do you get mad when people cheer loudly too? I don't know about you, but I get tired of sitting down the entire game. I like standing up and cheering or just standing and watching the game. It's not like it's something we get to do very often. There are 8 home games. 8. You probably shouldn't take them for granted.

I have absolutely no problem with standing and cheering... I just don't get why people stand and don't cheer. Seems to add no purpose to me.

They really do need to start a stand only section and just remove the seats from them. There are going to be some ugly fights.

I'm 76 yrs old and I've quit going to games because of people that stand and block me from seeing the game.

If only one person is standing in a whole section for the whole game, its just rude. One thing to stand and cheer your team on, another to just stand to stand. Call security and have them make him sit down when all those around him are doing the same.

this is not an age debate, it is called being courteous to those around you. I am 47 years old and can stand fine although I have had a spinal fusion so standing still for extended periods of time can be very hard on my back. Not everyone can and they have as much right to be at the game as anyone else. If you stand in front of me the whole game, better be prepared to get hit upside the head if you refuse to sit down when everyone else does..

If you are still inclined to come to games, ask UK for a handicap seat. I'm not trying to be insensitive or suggest that you are handicapped in any way. I'm just saying that there is a place for you to sit and enjoy the game if sitting is what you desire. Nobody should be shamed into sitting because it is inconvenient or annoying to others that prefer or need to sit, though.

Would love to see a stand, sit and stand when warranted sections. Give the people 3 options. I would be in the stand when warranted section. Unfortunately in today's times people only care about themselves...common sense goes a long way.

I stand a lot, and cheer my head off, but there is a time and place for everything. No reason to stand up on 1st and 10 when the other teams on the opposing 20 yard line 80 yards from where we are sitting. Sit down and let everybody else enjoy the game. You can cheer just as loud from a sitting position as you can from a standing position.

This is how I see it: The team is not there for me...I am there for the team. They are not there to provide me with entertainment. I am there to support them.

When the opposing team has the ball....I stand, I yell, I scream. I don't care if it's 1st down or 3rd down. I don't leave a game with my voice intact. When my team has the ball, I shut up so they can call audibles at the line. I'll even sit down if given the opportunity.

I'm not going to berate the guy who sits there with his earbud in and doesn't move except for the halftime trip to nacho bar, but I'm going to do what the coaches and players constantly ask us to do, regardless of whether Mr. Earbud likes it or not.

And I sure as sh** don't boo my own team.

Do you watch UK football.. an 80 yard td is the same as a 5 yard td.. both happen for us.. therefore I don't see the mindset in that unless the score is not close. If anything a defensive stand on the opposing 20 is more important as it can a.) flip the field for the offense or b.) a TO created becomes even more game changing (see SC last yr).

The way I look at it, every play is just as important as the next & want to try to create that advantage any time the chance comes. Missouri was a pretty good atmosphere. My only complaint is that I wish UK would implement something that all fans can use (like the cowbells, rally towels, etc)

Personally I like to stand the whole game but if the people behind me are sitting I'm not going to block their view.

But what blew my mind was during the very first timeout of the game. 12 seconds when Missouri challenged the play. A guy was just getting to his seat. He was standing talking to someone and a couple started SCREAMING at him "SIT DOWN YOU ARE BLOCKING OUR VIEW!!!"

It was during a timeout and both teams were on the sidelines. Apparently they just wanted to admire the turf. My Aunt that gave me the ticket says they are always like that.

well, this ain't the opera...i was in row 9 for the Missouri game and we stood and yelled on 1st and 2nd down...do you believe folks at Alabama complain that someone was standing during the game? c/mon man...we want an environment like that...stand up and support these cats!

The small stature girl who can only see the backs of the lard butts in camo might disagree with you. I went to school at Alabama, saw games and you'd be surprised how those take no prisoners fans accommodate others around them. Their mothers taught them manners and, for the most part. they listened.

We're new to this winning, football excitement and that may be a weak excuse for boorish behavior. Maybe with more experience, in winning, we can become more considerate of fellow fans.

Like the football player who celebrated too much in the end zone and his coach told him the next time to act like he'd been there before.

You really need reading comprehension skills.

I wasn't lecturing anyone. I stand and yell when it's appropriate more than most anyone in my section. Almost everyone sitting behind the guy who stands all the time when no one else is was getting pissed.

I'm typing with one hand while putting a baby to sleep so I apologize for grammar errors. I called Saturday night and called out sections 20 & 21because the vast majority of those 2 sections say nearly the entire game, even on 3rd downs in the 4th qtr of a close game. MJ agreed with me says it's a common occurrence for those 2 sections. It's an embarrassment...people complain that they want a competitive team, then when they get one that could have a special year they sit there, don't cheer, hell half of them didn't have a clue a game was being played. All 3 home games (especially with the bottom half of those sections) there was very little effort made to stand up or even cheer for that matter. 8 years ago we sat in the upper half of 20 and the lower half if that section was the same way. Couple that with a guy that came to what was obviously his only game of the year that hell attend asking the people in front of us to sit down while on defense. I told him " you've got nerve coming in here asking season ticket holders to sit down while on defense"., It sickens me that these people even wear blue, do everyone a favor and stay home and let real fans use those tickets and actually cheer. Your at a football game not a funeral, watch from the couch, you're there to cheer.

I doubt many folks can yell as loud as I can. I can do it while Sitting or standing. Standing for standing's sake makes no sense to me. There is a time and place. And for all you stand or die/ super fans I can count on one hand the home games I have missed since 1997.

Ha! That's funny. Again, my section stands for all the game and I bring my son who just turned 9 with me every time. He has absolutely zero issues with seeing the game. And he isn't that tall. He is an average sized 9 year old.

This shouldn't be that hard ...

"• It's not OK to stand just because it's your personal tradition or you think it's good luck for your team. If the other 75,000 people are sitting down, don't be a jerk.

• It is OK to stand before key situations (like a third down on defense or a restart for a NASCAR race), even if you're one of the few. Maybe you'll inspire your fellow fans to stand. But don't stand longer than you need to if no one else is.

• It's not OK to stand as the visitor in an opposing stadium and provoke the home fans. Well, maybe it's technically OK, but we don't recommend it, seeing as how you're asking to get your ass kicked.

• It's always OK to jump up and cheer whenever you feel like it; but you should probably sit back down after the play."

Nice post. That really should all be pretty much common sense but it's apparently too much to ask of some people.

At both basketball and football games, I like to stand for most of the game. I try to sit when the team is on offense, but I'll get excited and stand and cheer for a big play. I can't afford to go to many games, so on the rare occasion I get to see the Cats live, I'm pumped. I don't intend to offend anyone, but I think it's perfectly fine to stand and cheer whenever you want at a sporting event.

There are appropriate situations to be sure. But it's a virtual guarantee that there is someone behind you who is simply physically unable to stand for an entire football game. In fact, I go with one of them. And that man has forgotten more UK football than most of the inconsiderate fans on this board will ever see.

you're doing it wrong. you should be able to hear a mouse fart when your team is on offense on each down before the ball is snapped.
you want your offense to be able to communicate the play correctly, so you shut up. you don't want the opposing team to be able to do that, so you make as much noise as you can to make it as hard as possible on them and try to drown out their calls and audibles on every snap, not just 3rd down.

watch a Colts game some time and learn what the crowd's supposed to do at a football game.

I love a group who wants to stand and get loud!! That being said when asked nicely by some of the elderly I try to ablidge. I know some who would tell you if you're getting too old to stand it's time to stay home on the couch.Try not to be a hater; standers are usually very pasionate FANS. the very word FAN is short for fanatic!!!

All I know is I've got front row tickets to the game this weekend and I will be standing the entirety of the game. Sorry section 2.

So, let's get this straight!
UK football fans that complain about stadium experience are lame and entitled
UK football fans that leave early or don't sell out every game are lame
UK football fans are rude and lame because they stand the entire game
UK football fans that buy a ticket and attend the game and want to sit and cheer are lame
UK football fans that don't attend games are lame
SMH. just SMH. This is getting worse than the Rupp arena talk on RR

Standing all game does not place you on some higher plain as a fan. It just makes you look stupid. Some lard ass in our new section stands all game DIRECTLY in front of two old folks who have been coming to UK Football games all their life, so some lard ass has convinced himself he is a " better fan" than they are, calls them blue hairs etc. I'm sure.

Save the lessons people and at least think of those around you. I promise your not getting a medal pinned on your chest for standing all game. You think standing all game helped Bama last week? I wonder if their fans stood last year in New Orleans while 12 gauge dropped bombs on them.......I bet they stood and still lost. So save that $hit. I'd rather respect an 80 year old lady than to stand all day and disrespect. Not saying never stand ,but take a rest when they are talking about the volleyball team or throwing t shirts across the field , or when we are 1st and 10.
