St. John’s it is(allegedly)

That’s cool. I’d like to see a pope Pitino match up. They aren’t champions but at this point this tournament is nothing more than a money maker so they want to get intriguing match ups.

They would have went with Arkansas and Cal but two things stopped them 1) it’s a big assumption that Arkansas will even field a basketball team next year at this point and 2) they want a team that has a coach that can potentially lead a team to a win and Cal can’t win a close game to save his life

I'm glad it's replacing another high-end opponent, specifically UCLA. This game will draw a LOT of viewers being Pitino playing against Kentucky. That's always good for the sport, and more so, good for Kentucky.

So Kentucky schedule is
Michigan state
ACC/SEC challenge team
Louisville
IU
Gonzaga
St. John’s (allegedly)
And I’m guessing the rest will be mid majors or bad teams in rupp
I mean… “the rest” will probably be the toughest part of the schedule with the SEC. But I suppose you may specifically be talking about non-conference schedule.

Totally agree. It should have been UConn. Very short-sighted decision if they want to continue this into the future.
This is the CBS Sports Classic. If UConn is going to replace anybody, it should be Michigan State in the Champions classic.

That being said, I wish we'd ditch the CBS classic and get back to doing one of the Invitational Tournaments semi-regularly. Can we even do all three?

What a stupid replacement this is. This CBS event is dumb as hell (and our record is crap in it).

Why? Because Pitino doesn't have many years left and St. John's will fall off after he's gone? I don't know how the contracts work to be in this classic, but if it's a short term deal, then I say it's not bad at all.

A Big Team team needed to go between Ohio State and UCLA for a big marquee event. And they chose to boot...UCLA? Do they realize this is a basketball event?
You’re making up a false narrative. Nobody was booted and conference affiliation had nothing to do with it.

UCLA wanted out and St. John’s has agreed to replace them. It’s as simple as that. Nothing more.

This isn't the Champions Classic, it's the CBS Sports Classic, so no reason to champions.

Probably will be the highest rated watch of the regular season. Good story lines across the board.

I think the Champions Classic is great as is, but the CBS Classic could probably rotate teams in and out (including UK) to keep it fresh.

Im all for playing cupcakes until SEC. Our schedule is always brutal and getting 30 wins and a 1 seed is needed for us to get to F4. I don't care if we schedule women's teams at this point. Just turn in 30 wins on selection sunday against jack shit like Duke will and see what happens.

Is it just me, or is this starting to feel like the UK non-conference schedules of the 80's and early 90's where UK was ready for all takers?
I think a lot of that is myth, but it's a popular myth, as you're not the only one. Cal played a similar amount of tough OOC opponents as we did under Sutton and Pitino in the mid 80's and early 90's. The difference is that the OOC schedule increased from 9 games in the mid 80's and 90's to around 13 games in the 2000's. So, you generally keep the same amount of tough games, but you fill in the others with weak opponents.

St. John’s actually has a good basketball tradition. They are # 9 in all time wins. I remember them being tough in the 80’s, seems like Chris Mullen was there 6 years.
I wonder if not having a football team helps them or hurts them in NIL?
Definitely helps they won’t have to share with football when and if it’s decided each school gets a designated amount

I’ve always wanted to see UConn and Arizona with UK, UNC in the CBS classic. That would be about as good as you could get if comparing to the Champions Classic. I was hoping OSU would be the team that leaves because we can never seem to beat them in it. I love that we are going to play St John’s in it this yr, but like others have said once Pitino is done, it wouldn’t be near as intriguing having them in it.

It wouldn’t bother me at all if they got rid of the CBS classic at some point and we just went back to playing UNC home/home every year.
