South Dakota St big man Oscar Cluff enters portal, 17.6 ppg, 12.3rpg and 2.8ast per game, another predict fit for Pope

So was Amari’s. He can’t guard in a phone booth.
There was a time earlier in the season that I would have agreed with that, but he’s stepped it up the past several weeks. Seems like he just needed some time to adjust to the level of competition, although that could be a concern in the early season for any of these mid-major and small conference transfers.

Nothing against these guys but I want UK to grab some power 5 transfers like OO, jr, butler and Garrison as well. We need high level athletes to make final fours and win national titled.

Amari is good in SEC, he is mid major player

butler is not from P5...

I think if a mid major player has good athleticism or has strong body, it is safe to say that this player will translate well in SEC

True but this portal cycle is not going to yield the quality and depth of last year's class.
No fifth year guys unless they started in JUCO.
I was going through the draft big board(top100 prospects) trying to figure out who this year's Robinson, Lanier, Wells, and Davis would be as in players who simultaneously enter the draft and portal.
Really couldn't find a definite guy.

Butler, mid-major who made it to Final 4, hit game winning shot in Final 4, making it to final game
Williams, mid-major
Brea, mid-major
Carr, was mid-major before transferring to WF
Reeves, was mid-major
Grady, was mid-major (having a really good year on a really good team, until injuries got him and others)

Looking at other top SEC teams:
Broome, was a mid-major (in KY)
Sears, was a mid-major
Lanier, was a mid-major
Clayton, was a mid-major
Knecht, was a mid-major

I’ve been interested in this guy for a while. Not a shot blocker, but has a chance to do a great job at everything else. He was conference all-defense in spite of his lack of shot blocking. He’s nimble.

If we get him it will be critical that the team has guards who can stay in front of their man. Then his defensive rebounding could take over.

Bad take.

Mark Sears came from Ohio Univ

Johni Broome came from Morehead St

Dalton Knecht came from Northern Colorado

Walter Clayton Jr. came from Iona

Chaz Lanier came from North Florida

Grant Nelson came from North Dakota

JT Toppin came from New Mexico

Those are just right off the top of my head.

You can get elite skill and athleticism from low or mid-majors.

Amari said himself he struggled to learn how to play defense in this league. How he is playing now, he would have fouled out in the first half in his old conference. I saw an interview basically with him saying I had to relearn what a foul is.

Honestly, he seems more like a Calipari center; sounds more like a traditional low post center than a perfect fit for Pope's offense. What am I missing?

I’m skeptical here. The little bit I watched he looks like he should be at Saint Mary’s. Good, unathletic big, heck he’s even from Australia where Saint Mary’s has crushed.

Does anyone have a good example of someone that transferred down a level then transferred back up to great success? He went from Washington St last year as a very very average player to great at SDSU in the Summit.

That is a better question. Probably a lot fewer, but I think probably a lot fewer have even tried doing that.

1. High assist rate
2. Conference all-defense
3. Very good free throw percentage, and he’s made what few threes he has taken.

Proven do it all centers are going to be in the draft, not the portal. But this guy has a chance to become a do it all center.

I share everyone’s skepticism in a way. But there’s a lot to like here.

Thanks; I appreciate getting an informed answer. I knew he had a good assist rate but wondered if he had any shooting range. Most bigs that shoot free throws well often can become good 3 point shooters. I also didn't know he was defensive all conference. Sounding better to me...
